BRAVIA Engine Full Digital Video Processor
BRAVIA S-Series LCD televisions use Sony's BRAVIA Engine full digital video processor for crisp and clear images. Several special picture enhancement technologies are integrated into the processor to create better gradations with more detail, enhance contrast, and dynamically improve color performance. > Digital Noise Reduction Circuits: Reduces block noise and mosquito noise by using pixel-level filtering to reproduce a clean and clear picture. And Motion Vector Noise Reduction reduces just the noise in the video signal for video further reducing unwanted noise and blur artifacts. Digital Contrast Enhancer circuit: Improves contrast by enhancing all areas from dark to bright in parallel with texture control providing a three dimensional picture. > Color Reality signal processing enables the expression of all the colors of life in vivid detail for dark and bright scenes. Details in dark areas of the picture are there, just like they are supposed to be.

Live Color Creation (featuring WCG-CCFL)
Live Color Creation is a special Sony function that achieves precise, wide color reproduction using a combination of advanced chroma signal processing algorithms. A special wide color gamut backlight (WCG-CCFL) is coupled with Sony's Live Color Creation circuitry. The benefit is clear blues, natural greens and overall vibrant colors in all scenes.

Xross Media Bar (XMB) On-Screen Menu System
Xross Media Bar is Sony's Emmy Award2 winning on-screen navigation that provides quick access to various set up functions and features. For instance selecting different types of media is made fun and easy by scrolling horizontally across icons until you find the type of media you are looking for. After selecting the media type, a list of its content appears as vertical thumbnails. Key set up menus and features work the same way. The main benefit of the XMB is that users can navigate through on-screen menus without taking their eyes off of their TV.

DMe Compatibility
DMex compatibility allows the connection and operation of a whole new category of products that is being developed by Sony (sold separately). The first of these products is the optional BRAVIA Internet Video Link module.

BRAVIA Theatre Sync
BRAVIA Theatre Sync reduces the hassle and time consuming job of powering up, changing the signal routing, and adjusting other functions to the simple push of one button. All you need to do is to connect BRAVIA Theatre Sync capable products to each other via one HDMI cable. The rest is easy. For instance, the One Push Play function activates by touching the play button on the remote and BRAVIA Theatre Sync takes over from there. The BRAVIA Home Theatre System and TV turn on. The DVD input on the BRAVIA Theatre system and TV activates. The TV mutes. And finally the DVD plays. There are two other BRAVIA Theatre Sync functions - One-Push Theatre Settings, which provides optimal picture and sound settings for movies and One-Push System Shut Down for turning off the entire home entertainment system.

BRAVIA Internet Video Link
The first DMex product to be introduced to the market is the DMX-NV1 BRAVIA Internet Video Link module (sold separately). BIVL, as it is affectionately called, can stream available Internet video from select content providers directly to your TV with a broadband connection3 without the need for a PC.

S-Force Front Surround
S-Force Front Surround is a virtual surround sound experience made possible using just two front speakers in select BRAVIA models. To accomplish this, Sony spent several years studying how our ears work. By understanding exactly how we recognize the origin, direction, volume and timing differences in sound right and left ear, Sony was able to create complex audio processing that delivers dynamic virtual surround sound without the need to bounce sound off walls and back to the listener.

HDMI and PC Connectivity
Designed for maximum versatility, Sony's BRAVIA S-Series Digital LCD TV line is equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. The HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with multi-channel digital audio to provide matchless image and sound reproduction. The HDMI and PC inputs (HD-15-pin) offer easy connection to your PC, allowing you to use your high resolution BRAVIA S-Series Digital TV as a computer monitor.

Light Sensor-2
Intelligently adjusts the screen brightness to match the ambient light in a room, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience. In a dim room for example the screen automatically reduces brightness making it much more comfortable for viewing.
Freeze Function
Sony's Freeze Function is a useful function that allows you to temporarily freeze the picture in a separate screen while the programming continues to display. This comes in handy when you want to copy a recipe, phone number, etc. that flashes too quickly across your screen. Simply touch the "Freeze" button on the remote control and copy the details down at your convenience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars awesome t.v........2007-12-22

After much research and viewing the bewildering number of T.V.s at a local store we decided on the 40S3000 over the 40V3000. I have had it about a month now and have no regrets.

The 720p resolution was the one item that made me nervous but, reading numerous articles convinced me that with a 40" tv in our room (closest seat 7 feet) we wouldn't see higher resolution anyway. That seems to be proving true and all the high def content from Comcast looks incredibly crisp. Native 720p sport broadcasts are spectacular. The SD content also looks much, much better than I was anticipating.

This TV comes with a digital tuner and in the week before we got an HD cable box we were surprised that it found some 50 odd digital channels on top of the normal analog ones. Even stranger is that it seems Comcast sends pay-per-view over some of the upper end channels (e.g., 114.x)--entertaining to see what your neighbors are watching....

Anyway, if you are on the fence, save yourself $300 and skip the 1080p.

I was all set to buy this on-line, but then I did one last search and Circuit City had it on sale resulting in it being only $50 more with tax than online. That was well worth the piece of mind of seeing the box (not to mention the instant gratification) and taking it home myself. The unit comes really well packaged and easy to install. If you have someone else to help you lift it, I think that whole "white glove" service is a bit overrated. Do you really want some guy who spends all day delivering big boxes upacking your new toy less carefully than you would?

P.s. if you are upgrading your cable package, negotiate a little. Comcast threw in their sports package for free.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing picture at a great price.......2007-12-08

First, let me say this is a great TV. The decision process can be rather bewildering - LCD or plasma, 1080p or 720p, screen size, etc. After extensive research (too much, if you ask the other member of the household), I decided that I wanted a 40" TV based on my room size. This narrowed it down to LCD (since the smallest plasma size is 42"). From there, I chose 720p (since most people will argue that you can't see the difference in resolution below 40"), and based on Consumer Reports reviews I narrowed it down to Sony and Samsung based on picture quality ratings. I went to the local Best Buy store, and for some reason the Sony jumped out at me. HDTV "purists" might cringe at this comment, but what really convinced me to go with the Sony was the matte finish on the cabinet. For some reason, the shiny Samsung cabinet seemed like it might be distracting, and I talked to a friend who confirmed my suspicion. After having a nightmare experience at Circuit City trying to buy this TV (the sales guy literally said "I need to go talk to my manager" - twice), I decided to buy it from Amazon. The price was well below everyone else on the market, white-glove delivery was free, and they even gave me a price-match refund when their price dropped after I bought it. The TV picture quality is amazing, and I couldn't be happier. If you're looking for a 40" TV, buy one of these today! I would also suggest buying an "upconverting" DVD player to go with your new TV. They are pretty cheap, and you can get a high quality picture while you wait out the idiotic Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD format wars. One last tip - you can get HDMI cables for ridiculously low prices on Amazon, and the quality is just as good.

5 out of 5 stars Early returns - all positive.......2007-12-07

I found online reviews very helpful as I researched sets in the 37" - 40" category several weeks ago. I selected this Sony after seeing many positive reviews and being a lifelong fan of the brand.

It took a couple of weeks to receive after ordering and Eagle only came to my town on Wednesdays, so keep that in mind if you are in a hurry. Two guys arrived at the late end of the five-hour window, but did call twice during the afternoon to provide updates. They removed the set from the box and placed it in the entertainment center. They were only there for about five minutes.

The set was easy to set up and I have watched it the last two nights. My early impressions are all positive. I am watching satellite TV provided by Dish Network and DO NOT yet have HD. The picture is more vivid than my Sony 25" Trinitron and the widescreen is fantastic, although occasionally I notice that I am watching standard definition on a 40" HDTV. Mild graininess (for lack of a better word) is noticeable, reminiscint of the big screens of old. So far, I do not consider this a big deal, which is supported by the fact that I have not yet decided if I want to pay Dish $20 extra per month to get the HD package. The sound is quite good and the menus are extremely simple to navigate. We watched a DVD (standard DVD player) and the color, especially blacks and greens were amazing.

I will update the review after more experience, but so far I am quite happy with the purchase and see no reason to give anything but a 5-star rating. Don't forget the free shipping and sales tax dodge when comparing prices.

5 out of 5 stars Quality TV for a good price.......2007-11-02

Great picture and overall quality. We upgraded our dvr and satellite service to take advantage of the picture and are very happy with the results. A little complicated to set up if you have a lot of extra boxes hooked up to it (Sat,DVR,DVD, VCR, XBox, etc.), but well worth it if you have access to HD content. I could not tell the difference between this and the 1080p model in the store, so we sent with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfied.......2007-10-30

If you fight a constant glare problem, this is the perfect set.

Its been a little over two weeks and I am still amazed at the color.

Two things I would highly recommend: HDMI cables (no-brainer) & a DVD "up-converter" to take full advantage of your existing DVD collection while the industry is making up their mind about DVD-HD & Blu-Ray.

Ordering, shipping, product....all in all....a solid choice.
