Good Deal.......2005-09-06
I just resently got this product and so far it has been great. It was less expencive than a smaller name brand product and its picture looks the same. It is slightly pixlated on T.V. but for watching moives it looks like it could have come from a high quality name brand T.V. I think that this is a worrthy buy.
a mixed bag.......2005-08-31
The LCD looks good. In the store it was next to a Sony at 1" smaller and 3x the price and I couldn't tell the difference. I've noticed no blurring or anything like that with fast action. Colors will have to be toned down from the default settings, but can be adjusted to look good.
Make sure you look over the settings, balance was set almost all the way to the right on my unit out of the box which seems like an odd default. Perhaps it was left there by the testing crew.
DVDs over YCrCb look great, DVDs played on an xbox over YPrPb have rainbox interference pattern, but I don't know if that's from the Xbox or a cable. Xbox games and especially ones that support 720p over the same YPrPb cable look amazing so I'm not sure what the problem is there. Satellite through the Super VHS recorder over SVideo also has the same pattern, but Satellite straight via svideo cable does not so that may be something external to the TV.
Zoom looks like it just doubles the picture size instead of making a 4x3 broadcast fill the screen as is described in the manual and most other HD monitors so it's not very useful.
There is a nice button on the remote to change input, but you often have to change aspect ratio at the same time so of course that is buried in a menu.
Sound is not bad for built in speakers.
Emails to support and customer service have gone unanswered.

Far from being the best speakers out there, but you get a lot for the low price [SEE LATEST UPDATE]..........2006-09-20
PACKAGING RATING 6 OUT OF 10: Received via UPS to my doorstep on
9/5/2006, these speakers were packaged with a soft cover, then in
each corner there are moderately thin Styrofoam protectors, then
the inner box with all the pictures on the outside, then double-
boxed with an outer plain brown cardboard box with the model number
on it. Inside this outer box, there is bundled shrink-wrap on the
top (which is actually the bottom of the speaker because it is placed
in upside down), and that's it. Not very reassuring for a shipment IMO.
These are heavy speakers (about 70 pounds each), and the packaging for
safety in transit could be better because my pair (packaged seperately),
each speaker received some minor damage to one or more of the corners
even though they were "double-boxed". Those corner Styrofoam pads all
broke up and will have to be taped together should I ever have to ship
them again.
Double-boxing is a good start, but there should be more padding
approriate for such a heavy speaker. It would be in their best
interest to re-think the boxing configuration. For example, at
the very least put 1-inch thick Syrofoam blocks on the top and
on the bottom -that would help a lot to greatly reduce damage
during transit.
Anyway, considering the price of the speakers and the red tape involved
to place a claim with UPS, besides, the damage is fairly discreet unless
you are looking for it -it's just you expect when you buy something new,
you expect it to be new (a.k.a. mint) rather than have some imperfec-
tions. Oh well...
BUILD QUALITY RATING 8 OUT OF 10: Pretty good for a speaker system in
this price class. The silver finish kind of resembles brushed aluminum -
actually a nice change from the boring "Black Ash" of so many speaker
brands' standard finish.
The drivers appear to be of decent quality with rubber surrounds, perhaps
aluminum cones, a silk dome tweeter, all fastened with alan wrench type
screws instead of the standard-issue phillips head screws. I didn't get a
chance to see what the back of the drivers (or the inside of the cabinet)
looks like, so I can't comment on the phyical build quality of the driver
suspensions. The 8" (mirror-immage) side woofers are permanently covered
behind the silver grille cloth.
The front baffle's grille cloth is also of good quality and solid, with
holes cut out for each of the six front drivers, and held on with smooth
metal grille fasteners -some of the best I've seen from all but the much,
much more expensive speakers.
The cabinet does not seem to be internally braced (I guess they have to
cut costs somewhere). I did the knuckle tap on the top and sides of the
cabinet and there was quite a bit of hollowness to the sound. This
really does effect the tighness and clarity and pace of the sound. Two
sets of high-quality gold plated binding posts with gold plated bridges
are positioned in the back near the bottom of each speaker (set up for bi-
wiring or bi-amping). It also comes with rounded narrow feet (I don't
like the plastic elbows that stick out the side of the speaker though,
which are used on so many tower speakers nowadays) which apparently is
compromise to be used either on a carpet or a bare floor without too much
fuss either way.
AND NOW, THE SOUND 6.5 OUT OF 10: When I first plugged them in, they
sounded a little thin and rigid or brittle. Not surprised, do to the
fact that most speakers need at least some break-in time beofre then
come into their own. So... After breaking them in for a couple of
days of constant music at moderate levels they really openend up.
I have them set up in a 10 x 13 room with the speakers about 8 feet
apart, about a foot from the side walls and about 6 inches from the
back wall, and towed in about 15º. I had the side-mounted woofers
originally facing outward, but found that having them face inward
provided deeper, more authoritative bass.
I ran a frequency sweep on the speakers to see what kind of in-room
response they had (my room tends to inflate the last two audible octaves
about 10dB with most speakers), and they were all over the place,
fluxuating as much as 15-20dB throughout the sweep -mostly in the mids
and upper bass (I attribute much of that to the non-braced cabinet).
Fortunately, it actually seemed to help the vocals and bring them up
front in a pleasant nature. The imaging and soundstanging are quite
good -no doubt due to it's narrow from baffle.
To sum it up, these speakers get plenty loud with enough power, and a
good dymanic presentation, however, the bass starts to roll off in my
room about 35 Hz (I don't believe their 20Hz F3 claim which is what
influenced me to purchase these speakers in the first place), and the
highs really roll off around 15 kHz (but the lower trebble compensates
for that somewhat). I tilted them up to ear level position and it was
sigificantly better, but still rolled-off. The highs sound less rolled-
off than, say, listening to an FM tuner, but not what I'm used to from
most of the speakers I've auditioned in my listening room. I'm sure
nobody is surprised that these speakers have a lot of faults, but the
good thing is that none of them are annoying enough to frustrate me or
get me fatigued.
TIP: Take off the feet, add metal spikes, and tilt them to ear level and
they will sound even better. I might even consider changing the tweeters
out for more extended highs (I'll let you know here if I do to let you
know if it makes an improved difference or not).

REVIEW UPDATE POSTED 10/22/2006: Well, I've upgraded the tweeter to the
Vifa PL27TG-35-06 one inch dome. I chose this tweeter for its smooth and
extended frequency response to 25,000 Hz. It really added to the quality
of the sound, giving the speakers new life. The veil has been lifted off
from the stock tweeter's dark nature. A very nice improvement. It's
like going from FM radio to CD. The overall sound quality has gone up a
whole point to a 7.5 out of 10 now.
Regarding the quality of the drivers used, they do look to be of substan-
tial quality with hefty magnets on the tweeter as well as the 5" drivers.

For the looks, the big sound, and the size of these speakers, the value
is very high. If you're looking for a tall, skinny loudspeaker system
that plays pretty much full range sound that is acceptable for music and
home theater, this is one to put on your short list to audition at its
price point.
