Good enough, I guess.........2007-06-25
I have it mounted on the wall and it is both a TV and PC monitor for me. It does not pick up broadcast HD and there's nothing specific in the manual about that. So it just might be me, but I don't know how to receive the signal. Also, it either loses touch with the remote a lot or the remote eats up batteries like nobody's business, because it seems all too often the remote doesn't get through to the TV. It works again after I put in new batteries.

It was cheap when I got it at circuit city for $400, but then what could I really expect? It's 768p at least. It has all the connections I needed plus an easy selector on the remote, and my Harmony picked it up just fine with full function.
What I do like about it is the treatment of the widescreen, it's got like 5 different variations for the screen's aspect ratio, not including "normal." It's pretty bright, and I had to turn it down a little to get better contrast. I use it in a sun room, so it's great with the full wall of windows it sits opposite from. I also use it as a monitor for an internet PC, which works out alright. The speakers aren't anything impressive, but if you use it as a main system, you'd probably want to have a separate speaker system anyway. It's also got HDMI input, which is great, but I won't be using any HDMI devices with it . . . yet perhaps. My ps3 works for it, but I got that on my main TV.
Cons? Plenty. The speakers do have a tendency to have a lot of distortion during DVD's and sound really bad at high volume. The biggest complaint I have is the black levels and the contrast, which were pretty bad. Turning down the brightness improved upon it a good bit, but not by much. I have a Viewsonic PC monitor with 1000:1 and it has FAR better contrast than this, which is also supposedly 1000:1. When hooked up though the VGA or DVI cables, it works great for some reason, but plugged up though anything not HDMI, DVI or VGA, it looks pretty bad, even on component. I don't have an HDMI device, but use the PC as the DVD player instead of the DVD player I had for it, since the component connections looked bad. There's no digital audio, but then again I'm not using it for a major media center.
It's good for a small TV and works well enough, especially for its price. I have it on a swivel so that I can see it somewhat from the kitchen and the sunroom, so it fills its purpose. I haven't had any other problems with it that other users have mentioned. It's definitely NOT what you'd want to have as a main TV. I like Viewsonic, but this TV is nothing to drop your jaw at. I'd recommend Westinghouse's 42" LCD, which is native 1080p. This ViewSonic gets the job done and for a great price. Just be aware it's not of the greatest quality, so don't expect it, but you shouldn't expect much even for $600.

I bought this unit just before X-mas for my son's room.
A few days after hooking it up we too experienced the volume at full blast when turning it on.
And it's not just the volume of a tuned in station.
Rather it sounds like static like when you tune to a station with no signal.
This seems to be isolated to the TV input only as I've not seen this when powering up with the HDMI input selected.
I contacted viewsonic's support, to be confronted with someone that was rude, unprofessional, and argumentative.
This set is going back.
I know you may be tempted by the price but trust me, the couple hundred you may save upfront is going to cost you dearly.

I purchased this TV from another site and was excited to find a great TV for a bargain. Nice picture, very bright, little to no ghosting even from standard definition sources, and the dual RF tuners were great (you can hook it up to separate HD and SD sources at the same time, like a cable box and an HD antenna). Also it looks decent as a pc monitor, if you don't sit too close. The speakers lack a little body but they are sufficient for regular TV viewing. I recommend using your own stereo for movies.
However it didn't last long. After a week it won't turn on from cold on the first try - the backlight fails to start and the TV won't respond to controls or the remote. I have to unplug and power cycle the TV upwards of 10 times before it 'clicks' and functions normally. This happens every time the TV is off for more than an hour or so.
After living with this for a few days, I turned it on and the speakers made the worst sound I have ever heard. This is not an exaggeration: it sounded like someone crying out in pain, at full volume. If someone tried to make a more annoying, blasting sound, they would fail. Nothing reduced the volume or would stop the sound except, you guessed it, pulling the plug again. I tried it twice more with the same result before deciding that I liked my neighbors too much to punish them with my TV.
Their customer service was polite. The agent I spoke with was clearly American and experienced with helping customers, but they would not honor a return or exchange it. Now I have to ship it to California for repairs (I had to BEG them to pay postage). When I get it back in a MONTH, if everything is ok, I might change my rating to a 3 because it is a nice TV when it works. For the headache, though, I wish I paid a little more and got one that worked from the start.
