Beware of being mislead.......2007-12-15
Overall I'm satisfied with this product (especially since I got it on sale at Best Buy for $999.99), but I would not pay full price for it. I did my research and understood that you need HD cable to get the full experience. Our local cable company however only offers 19 channels. The difference between a "regular channel" and an HD channel are drastic and I'm extremely disappointed with the regular programming. The picture is grainy and distorted dramatically, people looked smooshed in the frame and the graininess is so bad I feel like I need new glasses. So when I watch HD programs and Blu-Ray dvds I'm blown away, but then I just get sad when I sit down to watch something ordinary like Jeopardy.

This unit is in some demand, with the belated discounts, and was lucky to find one (a 70 mile commute). I agree with online comments about the 1080p/720p issues; the incoming signal is more of a determining factor than the receiving unit in terms of image quality. Conclusion: a good 720p lcd-HD tv should do extremely well. Case in point; this one! Discovery HD broadcasts are particulary stunning, and other "nature" productions (e.g. "Exploring North Carolina" on PBS HD in my area). Combined with my AV receiver/surround setup, the unit not only lights up the room in a big way (and the sleek black finish is a nice complement too), but the sound completes it.

I purchased this TV about a month ago and so far no complaints, whatsoever. I have hooked it up to a Sony upconverting DVD player, and a digital-HD cable box. Spent initial half an hour to calibrate my input signals from these devices, and voila! crystal clear picture. Btw, you should always calibrate your TV because the factory settings are there to make these stand out the competition, not always The Best for your TV room ambiance.
I am not using internal speakers, since my devices are routed to audio reciever, so cant really say anything about the TV sound quality.
Overall, for the price, I am very happy and I think I made the right decision not to go for Samsung 40" which I was getting for about the same price.
Great TV. no problems so far.......2007-10-25
I purchased the LG 42LC7D recently to replace my Toshiba rear projection HD CRT, that failed after 3 and half years. I shopped around for the awhile and found that this TV had the best picture and features for the money. I got it set up and mounted to the wall. I was impressed by the picture. The HD looked really good on my old TV, but this one looks much crisper. The colors did not seem as vibrant as they were on my old TV, but they were close. I had it hooked up through component and HD looked excellent, but the analog channels were still a soft, and dull. Then I went and picked up the cable box that supports HDMI. I was blown away at the difference. I did not think it would matter that much. HD looks nearly the same, but the colors are much deeper. The biggest difference I noticed was in the analog channels. They look incredible! The colors are much better, and the picture is crisp. It is one of the best pictures I have ever seen with an analog signal. I couldn't be happier. Overall, I am very happy with this TV, and you can't beat the price.
Fantastic television... no problems for me.......2007-09-24
I felt like I had to chime in with a positive review to counter the only other review that existed for this set. And it's not because I don't believe the other user who gave the one-star review to this set, but because I'm here to say that such behavior for this TV does not appear to be typical. I know another person who has had this TV since June and has yet to experience a single issue with it. Assuming that the board failure/power problems never occur on my set (I've owned this set for about a month now), it's far and away a fantastic TV that rivals anything from more well-known makes like Sony, Samsung or Sharp.
In fact, I'd go out on a limb and say that with a little bit of picture tweaking, this set produces a much more satisfying and more film-like, less exaggerated picture when playing DVDs or Blu-ray discs than my other LCD TV, a Samsung.
The 5ms response time is noticeably better for playing video games, as I used to notice a very slight amount of motion blur when playing fast-paced online video games like Resistance on PS3. Not anymore with this LG set.
This set performs well enough with standard definition content. I'm not sure if this is because of its advertised "XD" engine or what not, but I don't feel dissapointed by its performance. But HD is a whole other story. When viewing HD content this set performs on par or better with any Sony or Samsung HDTV, both of which I have owned.
The remote if functional but nothing special. If you're like me this is a non-issue because I use my cable box remote as a universal one.
This set seems ideal for a viewing distance of between 7 and 10 feet. At this distance, you really feel immersed in what you are watching. If you must sit closer or desire a larger display, you'd probably be better serviced going with the added resolution of 1080p. But at this screen size and viewing distance, 720p remains a fantastic choice.
If I have any negatives to offer for this set, they are minor. Two HDMI and two component connections may be enough for now, but not in the future. An easy work around is to get a HDMI switcher hub that will allow for more HDMI connections.
Also, the black levels and contrast performs brilliantly if you're sitting directly in front of the TV, up to about 60 degrees either direction off center. But people sitting on the extreme sides of the set, about 100 degrees or more, will probably see a noticeable loss of contrast. My Samsung LCD that I moved upstairs handled extreme viewing angles better.
But, if you're like me, you spend most of your movie and game time sitting directly in front of the set, and at this position I find no fault with the picture. Blacks are black and brights, with a little tweaking, are just intense enough to not be overpowering. As I said, it looks very much like the picture you would get in high quality movie theater. Hues are muted just enough to be very realistic. It's a very Sony-like picture (you Sony owners know what I'm talking about), and much more natural looking than the often oversaturated colors (even with adjustments) that I get from my Sammy LCD upstairs.
Topping it off, this set is Energy Star compliant and even has really good speakers, if you choose to not use a separate home theater system.
I do not regret this purchase one bit, and based on this experience would buy from LG again.
Hopefully no hardware issues rear their ugly heads in the near future, but as of this moment, I couldn't be happier.
Bad circuit boards - Loss of power.......2007-08-20
When it worked, the TV worked great. BUT.. After two weeks the TV would come on all by itself and at random. At first, I thought I was getting RF interference from a neighbor. But, the sound started going out at random a few days later. A call to LG Customer Service revieled a Service Bulletin (SB) has been issued for this known problem. A week later a Service tech came out to service the mother board. He did not have all of the tools to unsolder the three small components and put new ones in. He had to borrow my stuff. He mentioned he had three more to do and his shop had done several of these fixes. A few days later the unit would lose power after 30 mins. Another SB, a new mother board and it still does.'t work. The Tech also had two more to do that day. Hmmm, quality control? LG will replace the set with a new one. I've lost confidence in this unit. Too many SBs which can't be fixed.
