fast, quiet, solid (so far).......2007-12-03
I've had one for about three weeks. I am very pleased. Mine seems very quiet, compared to my iMac G5 nearby, etc. Even using the Firewire interface the disk access seems noticeably faster than my slightly older LaCie "porsche" USB2.0 drive. Probably due to both raw disk access speed, and the RAID configuration, which is built into the hardware. (I like that.) I like the fact that the UltraMax has a USB hub built into it. You can apparently even use the USB hub while using the Firewire interface, if you first let the computer find/recognize the drive as a Firewire device. Anyway, I'm thinking of purchasing another.
A Beautiful Malfunctioning Machine.......2007-09-23
as a musician i purchased the Iomega Ultramax 1TB HDD to store all my samples and software programs in one solid unit. from the moment i connected the Ultramax to my laptop i've endured nothing but error message after error message. it could be a compatibility issue with Windows Vista but upon turning the HDD on i'm constantly asked for driver software, for over a week Vista would not recognize the HDD but when connected to Windows XP the drive can be seen and appears operational.
i contacted Iomega regarding the driver issue and all they could say was that there shouldn't be a driver issue, they offer no driver downloads and what little support they offer comes by way of a peer support message board filled with costumers as clueless and irate as i am regarding their own purchases.
after exhausting every possible solution i finally updated my laptops BIOS and i can now see the HDD connected to my laptop but i still receive a "please intall driver program" message every time i connect the Ultramax to my laptop and if i leave my laptop idle for too long the HDD stops being recognized and i have to shut it off and back on.
Iomega claims that since i reported that the Ultramax appears to work on my pc running Windows XP that they will not issue a refund nor send a replacement HDD, which means i'm now stuck with a machine that won't function properly with my music workstation.
Iomega also claims that the Ultramax works in Vista yet their own message board is flooded with costumers complaining of Vista compatibility issues and neither Iomega nor Microsoft are willing to address the problem or offer a reasonable solution.
the Iomega Ultramax 1TB is a beautiful piece of equipment but i'd prefer an ugly HDD that actually works.
Rock Solid.......2007-09-06
I edit videos on a Mac, which is how it arrived pre-formatted, and it has performed excellently. The case it rock solid, since I transport it from time to time for work at other locations. It's design will allow me to stack them when I need more storage. Only concern is that it uses RAID 0 to achive the 1TB size, I lose one drive and it is back to square one. That is why I will be purchasing a second drive for backup.
Sent preformatted for Apple, didn't work w/ XP, tech support $25 from 1st call.......2007-09-06
I had been very pro-Iomega prior to this experience, having purchased and used two of their 250GB drives and one 80GB drive with great success. This time they sent a drive formatted for use with an Apple and convoluted instructions on how to reformat the drive for Windows XP, which didn't work though I followed them to a "t," and neither their manual nor their website contained a support number. When I referred back to the shipping confirmation e-mail message and got a number to call them at, I was told I could return the drive or pay $25.00 to talk to their technical support desk. All of the first-line support personnel I spoke with were surly and clueless. The one I just spoke with couldn't identify me from the order number sent with the package which was apparently different from the order number they had e-mailed me, and took twenty minutes to process my return, misspelled my name, and probably misspelled my e-mail address in the message she was to have sent with my FedEx return form, because it hasn't yet hit my Inbox. The worst customer-support experience I've yet had.
Drive fan bad, sounds like a sick cow..........2007-09-03
Drive is fine except that:
1. Not compatible with apple airport extreme basestation due to block size issue.
2. More importantly - very noisy fan (probably damaged) sounds so bad I can't be in the same room.
And there's no obvious way to get support from IOMega without paying $25/call.

I've had pretty much had every kicker speaker around from the kicker L7, L5, and CVR's. And truthfully the only speakers in the family that knock better than these are the L7's. I got a pair of these flatjacks, and maaaaaan!!! Put it like this my friends tell me to turn my system off when i come to thier house because i knock everything of the walls.
