Be Aware Before You Buy.......2007-10-01
My Desktop is only a 140 GB drive, so this 320 GB machine sounded great for the price. Once again, as an illiterate geek, I was disappointed to find NO instructions except how to plug it in. When I did get the main window to open, I used "SETUP" to install the software. But this is no simple 'drag and drop' situation. It also comes with two (1 month with option to buy) programs called Memeo Synch and Memeo Backup. This just made it all the more confusing. At the present time I have download about 19 GB of information, but it took literally more than 24 hours. I expected to just install and walk away with everything installed in less than 3-4 hours. If you are familiar with computer backup systems, you'll probably love this, but if I can't figure it out in the next few days, I'm taking it back.

This external hard drive is very stylish as well as useful. It is fast, easy to use, and has enough space to store all the data and multimedia a typical modern user would have.

I've had this external drive for about a month now, and it works great. When I first receive it, I used the pre loaded backup software that comes on it to setup nightly backups of my PC. That took about ten minutes. I highly recomend this product.
Problems also with Windows.......2007-06-10
After I connected this device to my computer I discovered it was not formatted. The setup and backup software was supposedly on the unformatted hard drive, no CD is supplied.
I contacted customer service by email (the "Australian" phone support turned out to be a Singapore number) and I was advised to download the software from the web site.
I did so, only to find it did not work--it was for the 500 gb machine.
I emailed support again, I'm still waiting for a response.
I ended up formatting it using Windows and downloaded a freeware backup program, which did not work. I downloaded another one, Cobian, which does work.
Too early to say how good the drive is, only time will tell.
The one star for the setup experience.
It took around 90 minutes for a 60 gb backup on USB2, and I will consider getting an eSATA card and cable.

I bought this drive because it was priced well for its capacity. I tried installing it on my Mac according to the quick install guide included with it. First I tried using Firewire, but the drive never mounted, nor did the drive turn on automatically as the directions said it would. Then I tried using USB and the same thing happened: nothing. Before returning it, I tried using the company's support page. There are a lot of knowledge base answers but nothing I could find pertaining to my problem. I then tried contacting them using their question form. After filling everything out and having paid special attention to all the required items, I was greeted with the message that my submission had failed. I tried to go back and correct whatever the problem was, but alas that was impossible. I will not be purchasing this company's products in the future.

Western Digital My Book Premium 320 Gb.......2007-08-09
I have had this about 3 months now.
I'm sure the drive itself is fine but the interface leaves a bit to be desired.
First of all, that big blue button with the swirly light? It does NOT give you one-touch backup. Others may, this one does not.
So you go through the menu and select either "backup now" or "schedule" a backup.
I have had problems where I scheduled a backup (say, for Monday morning, 6:00 AM) and it never backed up! I have not solved this mystery.
The software accumulates lists of scheduled backups and apparently you cannot delete them. They accumulate and you hit a checkbox "activate" or "deactivate". Not ideal.
Back to the big blue button...it's supposed to be a safe shutdown. "press once" the instruction say. Essentially it doesn't work. One long press OR a short press does not shut down the drive.
It's not fast either. Consumer Reports has the 250 Gb unit as one of the slower units. (it took 2.0 minutes to back up a Gb, both on USB or on IEEEE1394 Firewire.) Some of the other units were rated at twice as fast.
Interestingly, most of the units were NOT faster with Firewire. (so what's the big deal with Firewire?)
The Seagate unit, however, although one of the best rated was even slower.
Speed is not a big deal for a half a gig...but if you want to backup most of your C:drive, you've got a wait.
If I had to do it again, I'd look closey at a Seagate or an Avastor unit.
Wish it were a little more intuitive........2007-06-28
The WD 320 My book works well for the most part. I wish that it were more intuitive and would hibernate when I close my Mac Book Pro. I have my Mac Book connected to an external monitor and when I hibernate the Mac, the My Book stays on and keeps the Mac on as well. It seems like backing up a hard drive could be easier, as well. All in all I think its a good product and I will certainly buy another one.
