If you are serious about storage then don't buy this unit. The setup was extremely slow as it took over a day to initialize the raid drive. Once the unit was setup we discovered that it can only write at 7mb/sec max. As we were no longer able to return the unit we took the drives out and bought a raid card. If you don't mind waiting forever for your files to transfer then this unit is for you.

I bought this product to be on a PC/MAC network. Documentation is scarce even on the Lacie site. Although it does not say, it is programable from a MAC without installing any software if you know its IP address. Its mayor problem is that it will not accept backing up long name files, and this is an issue Lacie should work on.
I was even able to upgrade its firmware from a MAC browser.
Lacie should offer more user info and MAC compatibility on this product.

I've had my bad share working with hard drives and have had several crash in the past - that's why I want a RAID5 system, to keep my files safe if one drive crashes. I thought the Lacie drive looked interesting, since it is a hardware RAID and not a software RAID. There were no bad reviews, I guess since it is such a new product - so I bought it.
First, the instructions for setup are poor. It does not tell you when to put the drives into the bays - one at a time with the unit on (like other systems) or all at once with the power off, or does it even make a difference? I choose to put them all in with the power off.
Next, it took me an hour to figure out that I needed to be connected to the router with a cable and not my wireless connection to let the drive utility software even recognize the drive. Maybe this is common knowledge, but in the manual there is no mention of this and the instructions show how to connect the drive to the wireless router, but don't tell you to make sure you have a hard line from the computer to the router.
The setup of the RAID5 was simple and went smooth, I had to review the instructions because it gives you some confusing choices for setup of two partitions, one for file sharing and one for computer backup. Being that I like using Norton Ghost for my backup and didn't want to mess with using their utility (it said I didn't need to install it to use the drive) I chose to use all the space available for sharing and use the sharing space for my backup - since I didn't use their software.
I then proceeded to use notron ghost to backup my laptop to the Raid, after about 5 minutes I started getting errors. These included - Open failed, The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error, Device public appears to be offline, disconnected, or otherwise unavailable, Unable to write to file, Unable to set file size etc...
So I thought ok, I'll recreate the RAID5 again, which I did. Turned everything off, and started again.
This time I tried to copy a folder over to the drive with about 3GB of data. It started to copy and then told me the network drive was not available. So I ran the disk utility and tried to detect the drive, it would not show up. I tried rebooting the computer, it did not show up. I tried to turn it off via the power button on the drive, it would not turn off. So I pulled the plug on it, it turned off. :) (I know you should not pull the plug, but I was frustrated at that point after spending good cash for this thing)
I turned the drive back on and it detected it, and some of my files were on the drive, so I tried to run Norton Ghost again (my backup program for the laptop) and turned the setting down to slow thinking that the data rate was too fast and was the problem over the network connection. Same thing, errors.
I then tried to create a folder on the drive, and it told me it was disconnected.
I then e-mailed Lacie, since they don't have a phone number for technical support (after you create a login name and password and register your product)
One of the things I noticed is that two of the drive lights seemed to be off more than others. So Lacie's solution is for me to replace the drives that are not lighting up like the others with new drives and rebuild the raid and that will tell them if the controller port for that drive is at fault or if it is the drive.
I don't know about you, but I'm not purchasing two new drives to see if that fixes the problem. This is going back to them. Wish I could find a good network storage solution, RAID5 without bulding if from scratch.
Maybe I just got a bad one, but I've had problems with other drives (different models) from Lacie and won't be using them again. On one the fan went out, on the other it crashed and I lost data. Best of luck you and your search for network storage.

I received my product very fast and it's great. All the other cases make the new nano so much more bulky than it should be. This keeps it very thin, I hardly notice it's in my pocket, even when I sit down. The little pull tab that is on the case make is very easy to remove it, and the case is a perfect fit. Very secure!!

Be careful with this Incipio Company... I bought my case three weeks ago and never got what i ordered... a week and a half anfter i made my purchase i received a package with a cheap silicone case on it and a letter saying that the case was "temporarily" back ordered and that they were going to ship it whenever it became available... I've been waiting for three weeks and never heard or received anything from them... basically I paid $20 for a cheap silicone case that was not what i ordered.
