I got this harddisk for 100$ on a discounted sale long back. I have been really messy maintaining it and the harddisk has been exposed to all kinds of rough handling.. it still stays strong... mine was pretty reliable... the only problem i had was with the power cable.. the cable connecting the adapter to the power supply did not fit along well and even the slightest of movements would force a loose connection and the hard drive would get disconnected.. apart from that... the hard disk has been a pretty good investment..

I bought this and wasted gobs of time trying to get my Windows 2000 system (fully updated) to recognize it. I was hopeful and very patient with this product. All of my computer systems support the USB 2.0 standard. I use many other USB 2.0 devices, such as a camera, music player, and scanner without any issues. In addition, I have in the past used an external enclosure for an 250 gb drive without issue. So, what is the problem with this Fantom drive? Fantom lived up to its name; it wasn't really there!
No luck, after hours and hours of futile attempts; this is a dead metal weight. The OS does not recognize the drive. As advised by Fantom's web site, I visited Computer Management | Disk Management, but there was no drive letter given for the Fantom drive. I also rebooted several times. No luck. And, lest you ask, my BIOS is fully updated, and I'm using the latest drivers.
Next, I tried accessing the drive on a different computer that was also running Windows 2000. Exact same experience.
A few days later, I tried accessing the drive on a fully updated Windows XP system (also fully updated). No luck there either.
I researched this problem extensively via Google before giving up. I also spent a good deal of time studying Fantom's web site. Their web site is bare bones. Basically, if you have a problem, you are S.O.L. Under the FAQ, they recommend a few things, but none of that works.
Now, this brand new Fantom drive that was handled with tender loving care by me was shipped DOA. It is just a lump of metal and good for nothing. I'm out time and shipping. I will never buy another Fantom product. I lost $42, and added another manufacturer to my blacklist. At least in the future, I will avoid any garbage from this particular source.
If you like to gamble, and think you might be in the percentage of those lucky people who get a good drive, then be my guest. For my part, I would prefer to pay a few dollars extra, and purchase a drive that has been tested before shipping. I always like to deal with reputable vendors.
Great Drive at a great price.......2007-03-13
I purchased this drive to go with a new Apple Airport Extreme to create a "airdisk" to access my iTunes music over the network. The drive installed flawlessly, and has been chugging along with no problems. Before I bought this drive I did a lot of research for a 500 gig drive and found a lot of people complaining about the Lacie and the WD Mybook. Sometimes I think those larger companies get away with a lot from name recognition. I'll continue to use Fantom Drives until I experience or hear of problems.
We've used these drives at work for about 9 months, and we put them their paces: a lot of writing/deleting as we process video and audio files.
The case is as small as you can hope for with a 500 gig drive. This is the same case our earlier 320's came in. the aluminum case keeps things cool.
