Not for wireless networks.......2007-12-27
I'm running Win XP Pro with a wireless network built around a USR8054 turbo-g router. When I connected the unit to the router and loaded the software, the software did not operate properly. Checking the Ximeta website, there is a note that certain turbo-g routers cause connectivity problems (mine was not listed) and a recommendation to use the router in standard-g mode (54 Mb/s). The website also stated that when used on a wireless network, multiple units cannot be used in any RAID configuration. I called Ximeta tech support and they confirmed this, adding that even using a wireless-N router is not recommended due to possible data corruption. I downloaded an updated driver and loaded that. I switched my router to standard mode. The Ximeta software now worked, but was giving me instability warnings. I also could not connect to the internet. When I was able to connect to the web, the Netdisk connection was lost. This unit is going back to the store, and I'm back to looking at NAS units.
excellent depending on the product.......2007-08-12
I have a product solution that does not get caught up in all the windows installation process. we are using these drives like a server and they are fantastic. These are major client applications that have no downtime with these units.
Gee no server, windows software, virus software or anything else. For a 3-4 user system again depnding on the software you have it works great.
Suggestion though is to use a high gain antenna for best wifi connectivity
good product for price.......2007-04-06
This product is pretty good for the price. It was very easy to set up and does what I want it (hold digital media for multiple computer and Xbox access) to well.
I set it up so that it directly connected to my wireless router, and intended to access the drive via 802.11g from my wife's and mine laptops. As I was moving files to the machine, the wireless transfer was pretty slow and the connection dropped out intermittently. I lost patience and connected the laptops directly to the router (and after some mildly irritating drive connection issues) the transfer was much smoother and faster. The wireless connection strength was fine, but I was only getting about 10kbit from 3 feet away. The wired provided between 100kbits and 300kbits. I recommend transfering large amounts of data over a wired connection.
I tested the connection speed by playing a video on my TV via Xbox (WMC) and the speed was fine to keep the (SD) video running smoothly. Music was also fine.

Do Not Buy.......2006-01-08
After five days, my DLO HomeDock no longer works at all. The only way to turn it on is by remote; and if your remote dies, you can't turn it on.
This is at best a simple piece of equipment, and it is not worth $99. If you want to listen to music on your home stereo, which is across the room, you cannot browse your playlists or artist or albums from across the room, because you cannot see the list on your TV. Explore other options before you consider this item further, and avoide DLO at all costs.
Good for some, bad for others. Not your simple dock........2005-12-30
I bought this product expecting several things. Mostly what I wanted, however, was a simple dock that had a remote. The included cables and such were just a plus to me.
I came home disappointed with it and returned it the next day.
It's basically $100 for a piece of plastic and some cords that allow you to connect the iPod to your TV/Stereo. To me, that's a rip off. I just didn't realize it at the time. To others, it might be worth it, because all of the extra included equipment (dock, remote, and chords) which would cost way more than $100 bought separately. But to me, the average person who just wanted a simple dock, it was definitely not worth the price tag.
The only functions I found myself liking was the ability to charge the device and play music/videos at the same time. The remote was also a bonus, but at the same time, it's not terribly functional. It was easier to just get up the 4 feet to where my iPod was docked, and manually control it's functions, rather than line up the IR remote directly with the dock and fiddle with some buttons.
One problem that really got me annoyed was the fact that the volume doesn't adjust (using the volume control buttons on the remote) when you dock your iPod and plug in speakers to the headphone/speaker jack. The volume up/down and the mute/unmute buttons on the remote essentially become useless at that point. Most likely the volume buttons on the remote control the *Docks* volume only, and not the iPod's volume. So if you connect powered speakers to the iPod's headphone jack, forget volume adjustment across the room.
I contacted DLO support about that serious engineering fault, but to this date I have gotten no response.
In summary, this dock probably isn't for the average person who just wants a simple iPod dock. It's more geared for people with home stereos that can be used in conjunction with the iPod, and people who want to connect their iPod to the TV for various reasons. If you fit that description, you'll probably save money buying this combo. Otherwise I suggest looking for another dock.
Limited functionality, poor design, poor remote responsiveness.......2005-12-28
This dock (and the iPod Video in general) failed to meet my expectations in several important ways:
* You can't see the iPod menu on your TV, despite what the salesman I spoke with claimed. This is a huge drawback. In order to watch a slideshow, you have to get up, walk to the iPod / HomeDock, navigate the menus to your starting slide, start the slideshow, and only then can you sit down and watch the slides from your TV. (This is a limitation of the iPod Video, not the HomeDock. However, it's a huge argument for not buying the HomeDock -- it's better to just have a long A/V cable to your TV and use the iPod directly, at least then you can see and use the full menu while you're setting up your slideshow.)
* You can't control music while watching slides. Worse yet, pushing the wrong button while watching slides breaks you out of the slideshow. Given that I have my library of thousands of photos on the iPod, and given that you can't just resume a slideshow where you left off (a big gap in the usability of the iPod Video's slideshow functionality), it's extremely frustrating as there's no way to change music w/o breaking out of your slideshow, and there's no way to resume your slideshow if you do choose to change your music. (Again, many of these are design problems with the iPod Video, but trying to do the same functionality via the HomeDock's remote makes it twice as frustrating. Moreover, in slideshow mode, the HomeDock's remote has two unused buttons that should have been mapped to "track forward" and "track back", but don't touch them! Doing so will stop your slideshow and you'll be screwed.)
* I haven't tried watching a video yet. I imagine the same frustrations would apply, however, they might be less because, during a video, you don't expect to be able to control audio and video independently.
* I also haven't tried to use this dock with a computer. It seems to me that, unless you have a computer in your living room, you're either using it as a computer dock or as a TV dock. (My wish for 2006 is an Apple computer that works flawlessly as an entertainment center hub.)
* The HomeDock's remote is not particularly responsive, and given the ease of bumping yourself out of your slideshow, this is extra frustrating.
* The base station has a place to put the remote when not in use. However, the remote is battery-operated, not rechargeable, so there's no need to "dock" it, and nothing substantial holding it in place when you do decide to "dock" it. The bad: if you bump the base station (and not even very hard) the remote falls down. The HomeDock is larger because of this extra "remote dock" space, and it also means you'll need to hunt for yet another obscure battery someday. The good: it does look kinda cool to keep the remote next to the iPod, and at least there's a place where the remote "belongs", which helps curb coffee table remote clutter.
Bottom line: I find the HomeDock unusable and prefer a simple A/V cable directly from iPod Video to TV. Until Apple upgrades iPod software to show the full iPod menu on the TV, and lets you control audio and video both independently while in slideshow mode, I would stay away from HomeDock (or any other expensive iPod accessory). Also, if you want to show slideshows from the iPod on your TV, you really need to arrange your slides ahead of time in iPhoto. Trying to do an ad-hoc slideshow with thousands of digital photos is too frustrating to bother.
