Stay Away from Buffalo - products fail miserably!.......2007-08-14
In short, the 'auto-sleep' software accompanying this product crashed my system and has never worked. That feature is why I bought it. I spoke with Tech support and they assured me that no matter WHAT was wrong with the drive it had to be my system's fault. I've worked on a tech support hotline for pc's for over a year and can assure you the tech support folks have no intention of assisting you in any way other than denying it's their product's fault. I'd encourage you to call Bafallo tech support and run this one past them before you buy this product. None of the packaged software (backup software and auto-off software) work. Buy a harddrive from a reputable dealer in stead (Western Digital, Maxtor or FreeAgent/Maxtor).

... if you like being treated with respect, if you like honesty and integrity in a company, and if you like expeditious rebate programs.
I am a detail-oriented, somewhat anal-retentive computer geek. After carefully submitting rebate information for a Buffalo hard drive, I was told lies and faced nothing but incompetance from Buffalo.
THE LIES:
-- I was sent confirmation of receipt of my rebate submission several WEEKS after I had mailed it. The email read as though they had just received it.
-- I was told that I had not properly submitted all the information, and needed to resubmit copies.
INCOMPETANCE:
-- There were two rebates for the product, one required a UPC cut-out, one did not (it required a copy, since there is only one UPC Proof of purchase on the box). Nevertheless, I was told I needed an original UPC/POP for the second rebate. Only after phone calls, email, and snail mail, was my rebate approved.
All in all, it was over 3 months before I received the first $25 rebate, and 6 months before I received the second. Had I known the trouble and hassle, I NEVER would have gone with Buffalo.
My Comp-USA (generic) external hard drive which is older than the Buffalo performs more dependably. Also, the back-up software that comes with the Buffalo is a joke -- totally "Mickey Mouse". By the way, they will admit nearly this much. Why include such poorly designed software anyway? As a selling point on the box / ad, I'm sure.
WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE:
Never to do business with Buffalo again. The lies and incompetance were not just the mistakes of a few, I believe that they were the result of DELIBERTATE COMPANY POLICIES STRUCTURED SO AS TO AVOID PAYING OUT REBATES.
Why go with a sub-standard brand like Buffalo anyway -- to save $10? I wished I had paid a bit more and gone with one of the more experienced, dependable manufacturers: SeaGate, IOMEGA, Maxtor, Western Digital, etc...
Why did I give two stars and not one? Well, though not as dependable as my other drives, the hard drive does still work after well over a year. I have to give it a shred of credit.
4 Mos and Going Strong.......2007-04-08
Outside of building your own this is a decent cheap solution. I've had 2 of these in operation for the last 4.5 months! They're going strong, quiet and there have been no issues thus far. The Memeo software was miles ahead of the usual ENC\Dansk Retrospect and as much as I like to script backups, my clients prefered the Memeo.
