WTF! It arrived today and guess what, the power button does not work! I have owned two other WD drives with no problems they still work fine except they are full. This thing does not power on, it doesnt do anything. Looks like I will have to return it. I am switching to seagate, so long WD!!!!!!!!!!

My experience with this drive have been good overall. I agree with the reviewer(s) who said the backup software sucks. I got Norton Ghost with my laptop so I never use Retrospect. I tried twice and it was ridiculously complicated.
As to reliability, my drive has been working over a year now. I kept mine formatted in FAT32 because I had read the reviews that said NTFS over a certain size was not recognized. I miss the security of NTFS, but FAT has given me no issues and the entire size is recognized.
I find you CAN turn off the drive by simply pressing the button under 2 circumstances: Either my laptop must be off or it must be sleeping (lid down). Once the drive recognizes there is nothing "attached" to it, it easily goes off with one touch. I turn my drive off regularly because I turn my laptop off regularly so it is possible that saves me some wear. I read on-line that leaving drives of this type up all the time does reduce their lifespan, but I doubt it's by much (has to do with the fact that they don't go into a sleep mode like regular hard drives do supposedly so they spin more).
I have defragged this drive more than once. That also did not cause a problem. The only reason I would think twice about this drive is that you cannot directly put it on a network like the other WD320 drive (Netcenter). I don't like having to have my laptop on to see this drive on my home network. Plus, it means my laptop is not really "mobile" anymore. After all, who wants to tote around a hard drive when they want to move their laptop??[...]

I have purchased several of these Western Digital external hard drives in the past and was very happy with them. This latest unit has a fully depressed on/off button and will not turn on. Very poor quality over all when compared with similar drives only a year older. Seems like this one was made in a different factory where it was thrown together by clueless workers who didn't care about the quality of their workmanship. I am hoping that the new My Book models from WD will be better made.

I purchased this External HD about 1 month ago from Fry's Electronics in Arlington, Texas for only $150.00! From what I can tell, that's a steal. Also bought a 3-year performance warranty for about $40.00...My primary computer is a sony vaio laptop which uses windows XP, so I converted the EHD's file system from FAT32 to NTFS for 'optimal' performance. I partitioned it into 4 parts, 80gig/80gig/80gig/remaining 65 gigs...Multiple partitions makes for better performance supposedly...One primary partiion and one extension with 3 'logical' divisions(?)...Once I did that, I performed a manual backup as prescribed and transferred all documents onto the primary parition.Stats: 6478 files worth 9.4 gigs transferred. Top speed 1.2 gigs/min...Took 30 minutes...I've never done this before, so to me this is a fast transfer, but I'm sure there's a way for me to optimize it down to
<5min???? Let me know if any of you know how to get it down to faster speeds...I'll update this if I found out first! So far, very satisfied with this product.

I have this one for about a year and i have no problems. It works great and the memory card reader rocks. I dunno why people said it stop works or lose information, maybe they have the hardisk always turned on, i use the harddrive and then i shut off the power when im not using it.

I've Only Had It A Week, But..........2006-12-16
I love it! To go from backing up onto CD to an external hard drive is GREAT! Even at USB 1.0 speed, that is very slow, but who cares. Let it run all night, done in the morning. After reading most reviews, I was dreading the Dantz (now EMC) Retrospect Express software. Version 6.5, that came with my drive, pleasantly surprised me. Very easy to install, set up was no problem at all. I connected the drive, formatted it to NTFS (I'm running Windows XP), installed the software & media card reader drivers and I was setting up scripts, backing up and testing the restore within a day (because of the USB 1.0, again..very slow) without a hitch. Remember, you don't need the software. It's plug and play. You can plug it in and your hard drive will find it without installing anything. Then you can copy over to it just like your regular hard drive. But, without installing the software & drivers, you won't have the functionality of the card readers. There is a way to install the drivers and not install the Retrospect Express, if you really don't want it. Or you can use any backup software you choose. I would recommend joining, or just checking out the Western Digital online knowledgebase and forum as well as EMC's knowledgebase & online forum if you are still debating. I downloaded the Retrospect Manual and studied it prior to purchasing. My tech level is above average, but a novice could get this up and running in no time. And, unlike the stories I've heard about other drives, it ran over 24 hours (I backed up over 40 gigs., and verified the backup...again, USB 1.0 is slooow) and the case was barely warm. Front USB port is very handy for MP3 players, etc. I did ALOT of research on external drives before purchasing this one (over a week) and am very satisfied. I would recommend this drive. I didn't buy mine through Amazon because NewEgg was cheaper and it's online exchange policy is one year after purchase. But, it's price is getting lower here at Amazon also. I will write back if any issues arise.

I originally gave this product three stars, I should have given it minus one. The firewire interface just doesn't work with my Mac. The software crashes. I am returning it. Caveat Emptor.
The drive seems great, and the idea of combining a card reader with a removable drive is very nice. I got this unit to work with my new Mac Pro. Mac users should note, if you are planning to connect the drive via Firewire to take advantage of the USB hub and cardreader you also need to connect the USB wire. I agree with the comment that the software is impossible. Instructions are terrible, and the version on the disk crashed. Downloading updated software and drivers helped, but it was non-trivial finding the right ones, Dantz has been purchased by EMC, there's a Reflection and Reflection Express, in versions 6.0 and 6.1, you get the idea. I still don't have the software working right. Probably not this level of pain on Windows...
