The 500 GB Essential NetCenter Ethernet Network Hard Drive from Western Digital is a high-capacity drive with an interface that allows it to be connected via Ethernet and a rotation speed of 7200 rpm. Great drive that saves space.......2007-08-11
We bought this netcenter drive because we only use laptops in our house. The WD Netcenter drive plugs into our wireless router. It supports 10/100 ethernet connections with a DHCP server. It took us only 10 minutes to set it up on all three of our laptop computers. We use it primarily to store pictures and videos. Since we have our router, modem, and printer in a closet (out of sight), we think it's fantastic to have this drive available to us without having to lug it around with our laptop. It's also very convenient to have the printer and a second hard disk plugged into the USB port on the back of the NetCenter drive. This allows us to access the printer and second drive just as easily as if we plugged them into our computers directly.
At 7200 rpm, the drive is fast (but not the fastest). It takes about 2 hours to transfer 100 GB of data. This is likely due to the 10/100 connection more than anything. As a previous reviewer stated, it would be nice if the drive supported 1GBs transfer rates; but, unless you're using for anything more than backup storage, we don't see the immense need for speed.
A previous reviewer also stated that the drive doesn't support large external mass storage via its USB connection. This is just not true. We have "daisy-chained" a printer and 500GB USB drive through the NetCenter drive. This is a major boon for us, since it saves space in our house and KEEPS clutter out of plain sight.
We set up the drive to be mapped using the WD Netcenter software. The software was easy to use and efficient. We did need to adjust my router and firewall settings to allow us to connect to this drive.
As a frequent computer user, we have some experience with hardware and software-- BUT WE'RE NOT EXPERTS. This system was easy for us to set up, and the instructions were clear enough for even the inexperienced to figure out how to use the system.
In general, we think the drive is a perfect match for laptop users, want to reduce clutter, and have a need for backup storage.

I don't like to write long or extremely technical review, I'll just give you my impression of this product when i bought it.
It is extremely easy to use, just plug it, read the manual and install the software and you are already in.
The firmware that comes with the device is pretty old, so my advice it to upgrade it to the one found on the website of WD.
You can create public and private folders with ease, the unit speed is good and it has extremely quiet noise.
Only 2 draw backs:
1. It doesn't support 1GB transfers, only 10/100 which is pretty old by now since my home network is 1GB already.
2. When I bought the device, I thought I can plug different hard disks to its usb interface, so when I lose space, I can buy another cheaper USB interface WD external hard drive and plug it. And by that I get extensible storage. To my surprise, I can't since the device only supports until 500GB storage (internally and externally), and since its already 500GB, thats its maximum. I hope they release a firmware that solves this issue.
Anyway, overall is good for a small storage space without the need to upgrade or increase space. Other than that, if you need more space, go for the World Book with 1.5T storage.

Two failed units - it's unreliable product.......2007-11-05
In less than a year, I have had two 500GB NetCenter units fail. The same thing happened each time: system suddenly becomes inaccessible or available on my home network. There are two ways to access NetCenter: 1) using the provided EasyLink software to store/retrieve data; and 2) using a browser to access the admin console. I use the unit about once a month to back up my data. Very disappointed with this product.
Excellent option for archival........2007-06-21
I purchased this item from Amazon's marketplace (ANTOnline), and I am surprised to see this item is no longer available.
This is a superb product that I have been using for the last 5 months. It runs so quietly, you never know it's on. Configuration and setup is a snap with the included utility.
Very Good Drive & Extremely quiet.......2007-03-24
So far, I've had a very good experience with this drive. A key characteristic that sets it apart from other drives is that it is virtually noiseless. It doesn't have a fan. I have it sitting on my desk and I can't tell that it's even on. I have other drives and some emit more noise than a jet engine. To date, it has behaved flawlessly.
WD NetCenter.......2007-03-14
Delivers as promised. I have not used the drive to share a printer but as a network drive, it's a good product. We use it on a peer network with 6 computers for file sharing and backups. No expensive backup software is required. We just use the Windows backup utility along with the Task Scheduler to automate the process. Very cost effective solution for file sharing and backups.
I had high hopes..........2007-03-08
The problem I see with this device, besides having an extremely wanting instruction manual, is that the network features (as in network drive) only seem to work if your firewall is OFF. What good is that? So I can't access my drive from my wireless laptop unless I shut down the firewall. And even then, I have to re-configure each time I fire-up my laptop. A real pain. It seems like a software/setting problem that could be fixed, but there is not enough meat in manual to figure it out.
Also, the UBS ports don't work.
If I had an extra day in my life I might call tech support, but until then I just use the drive from my desktop and I'm living with it.
