Great quiet SATA/150 hard drive.......2005-04-24
A great drive so far. Easy installation, quiet. Not too much of a speed difference over the 120G 7200RPM ATA/100 IDE Western Digital it replaced. I wanted to upgrade with no hassles, i.e., to transfer the operating system, software and data from my old hard drive (120G ATA/100) directly to the new hard drive (160G SATA/150). The software that comes with the drive (DiscWizard) takes care of everything for you, in one fell swoop, which is *wonderful*.
One thing to note is that I am not using the drive in a RAID array.. just one straight 160G partition, single drive, so I can't say how it would work in a RAID array.
The only things I had to do were (1) modify BIOS to turn on the SATA controller on my motherboard (an ECS 848P-A); (2) install the DiscWizard software on the old hard drive; and (3) install the SATA drive into the system.
I think the modification of the BIOS is the only step which novice users might forget or with which novice users might have trouble. Unless that is done, the drive will probably not autodetect and a novice user might get frustrated.
The DiscWizard software that came with the drive made installation a snap. It modified my settings to allow a hard drive of greater than 137G capacity, and copied the contents of my old hard drive to my new hard drive. By the way, the DiscWizard software prompts the user to do each step, including when to turn off the computer and install the drive. Upon booting up after installation of the SATA drive, it autodetects it and then prompts the user as to what the next course of action should be (e.g., format and partition the new SATA drive without copying the old hard drive, format and partition the new SATA drive and the copy the old hard drive, etc.)
I am impressed with the sophistication of the software, the goal of which is, of course, to make things easy on the user.
One thing I would recommend if copying the old drive to a new drive is purging the temporary internet files just before starting the copying process because it's a big waste of time to copy thousands of temporary internet files.
When DiscWizard advised me the copying was done, it prompted me to shut down the computer, which I did. I unplugged the old ATA/100 drive and rebooted. The computer booted identically to how it did before, except now with my new 160G SATA/150 in place. Nice.

You may think that a 5 year warranty is useless, but I've been working in the IT for more than 10 years and can tell you that all drives fail in time. Some will last for many years beyond the warranty, some only a few months. It's reassuring to know that your drive was designed to last a long time but if it does fail, that they'll be there to replace it. I've also owned many other brands such as JTS, Maxtor, WD, Quantum, Fujitsu and Hitachi in both IDE and SCSI interfaces. While some are better than others, none of them can compete with an industry first, 5 years warranty. Most consumer retail drives only offer 1 year, a few higher end consumer drives offer 3 years.
PROS:
1. NCQ can improve peformace if your SATA controller/motherboard supports it
2. Retail box includes all cables, documentation and excellent packaging
3. True SATA interface ensures lightening quick access to your files versus other companies that use an IDE to SATA bridge (basically adding a SATA interface to an IDE designed drive)
4. Built in temperature sensor that can be accessed using S.M.A.R.T utilities
CONS:
1. The drive is noisy, you can hear the heads tick as they pass over the platters. The ticks aren't so loud that it sounds like your hard drive is on its last leg, but loud enough to catch your attention.
2. Like all the other storage manufacturers, this drive is made in a variety of countries, the last two I bought were made in Malaysia and China.

I bought a Canon Rebel XTi online that didn't come with any accessories and so i wanted (and needed) a 35-80mm lens... but of course didn't want to pay $70+! This is a great beginner's lens, as it's small and lightweight, lets you choose between manual and automatic focus, and has overall great optical quality. The only downside is that it can scratch without a lens cap, so although it comes with one... you may want to buy 1 or 2 extra! After using this for a while I became better prepared for a bigger, better, (and more expensive lol) lens!

Disposable Kit Lens.......2007-01-12
This is the first SLR lens I ever used. Not a very memorable experience, I have to say. The lens is cheaply made, not at all sharp, has a very limited zoom range and is very, very, very slow. The lens is so slow that it really isn't useful indoors at all without a flash. The wide end of the zoom range - 35mm - is insufficient for landscapes while the telephoto end - 80mm - doesn't offer enough reach for distance shots. The build actually feels as if the zoom and focus mechanisms use internal cardboard components. I would be hard-pressed to find another EOS Canon or third-party lens that was as uniformly mediocre in all respects.
Instead of this lens, I would very highly recommend the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II which is sharper than this or any lens you can find for twice the price. Granted, the 50mm isn't a zoom lens but the limited range of the 35-80mm doesn't offer much of an advantage anyway. AND the 50mm is nearly 3 f-stops faster needing only one-eighth as much light for a shot making it great choice for indoor and dim lighting conditions.
