Sennheiser seals its reputation as the classiest name in headphones with the stunning HD600, a stylish and high-tech headphone that's exquisitely pleasing to listen to and nearly as pleasing to wear. A near-perfect mating of art and science, the HD600 uses an open, over-ear design to eliminate unwanted resonances and optimally position its large, dynamic drivers just outside your ears--so they work more like miniature speakers than traditional in-ear or against-ear drivers.
Granted, all this comes at a pretty hefty price for a headphone. But the lightweight HD600 represents one hefty value. It so far outshines other headphones in sound quality, build quality, and comfort that despite its price it's still a strong value.
Of course, with a headphone like this and a name like Sennheiser, it's the sound you're really after. With stand-alone loudspeakers, the goal is generally to provide balanced sound across as much of the audible sound spectrum as possible (roughly 20 to 20,000 Hz). High-frequency reproduction is easier than low, simply because low-frequency reproduction requires a speaker to move so much air. Speakers capable of rendering deep bass usually use large speaker cones--8 inches or more in diameter--to help move the necessary volume of air.
Headphones, of course, are restricted in the sizes of the drivers they can use. Being so much closer to your ears, the amount of air they need to move to convey bass frequencies is much smaller, but still a challenge for what are basically tiny speaker cones. And anyone who's listened to a lot of headphones can tell you, there's almost always a tradeoff in what a headphone driver is capable of. Some produce balanced overall sound with little in the way of bass; others aim for bass at the expense of natural-sounding midrange and coloration-free treble.
The Sennheiser HD600, we're here to tell you, manages--through its extremely high-grade parts and exquisite engineering--to bring home truly full-range sound with remarkable timbral balance. Rich, deep, effortless bass grounds the listening experience while the headphone's airy midrange and treble help render everything from acoustic bass to soprano saxophone and electric guitars with a haunting degree of realism.
The HD600 doesn't offer the lush midrange favored by tube-amplifier enthusiasts--tube fans may find the headphone somewhat bright and maybe even strident in tone. But the rest of us will revel in the expanse of crystalline detail and snare-snappy dynamics.
The exceptionally natural quality of the HD600's overall sound bears reiteration, since so many headphones with "fat" or even "slamming" bass response deliver the low-end goods with a degree of emphasis that, while pleasing to bass aficionados, grossly distorts the frequency balance, limiting the range of music and recordings that will sound good on those headphones.
How does Sennheiser do it? Through computer-optimized magnets--critical to driver operation--that minimize harmonic and intermodulation distortion, granting the HD600 its uncanny clarity and spaciousness. Furthermore, the headphone's advanced diaphragm design eliminates standing waves in the diaphragm material, preventing unwanted emphasis at otherwise resonant frequencies.
As good as this headphone is, however, we don't recommend it to those seeking a stellar headphone for portable use. While this unit is capable of amazing sound, its best performance requires more amplifier power than most portable devices can muster. The HD600 owes its strength in part to its large drivers, which just can't be moved as easily as those in smaller headphones.
Furthermore, the HD600's open-ear design means that sounds pass easily into and out of these headphones, which would in all likelihood prove irritating to you and to those around you in libraries, on buses, and even at the office. These are only our suggestions, however; the fact is your MP3s will probably never sound better than when you're playing them over this headset.
We'll just leave you with one last suggestion, then: if you're after the best-sounding, most comfortable audiophile headphones you can buy at anything resembling a real-world price, look no further than Sennheiser's HD600. --Michael Mikesell

Exactly what I expected.......2007-12-11
I've been wanting to buy a HD600 for many years because it seemed to be the benchmark for a lot of professional studio engineers and reviewers, not to mention budding audiophiles. But I hesitated because it's pretty expensive in Australia (A$600-700) and wasn't sure whether I wanted an Open headphone. Until recently I only had Closed ones including Sennheiser HD280pro. But I bought Koss KSC75 and Alessandro MS-1 (a tweaked Grado SR80) open headphones and liked the sound. Given the recent fall of the US dollar, I decided to purchase HD600 from amazon - even after a hefty shipping charge of US$54, it still only cost me US$349 (about A$385).
I burned it in for about 200 hours using a variety of source materials including a couple of audio test CDs. I mostly listen to my music collection (re-ripped in either ALC lossless or AAC 256kbps) in my iPod Classic 80G via line-out to my Minibox-E headphone amp (which is a fantastic little amp I got from Head Direct for US$159). (It's not a good idea to connect your amp to the iPod's earphone output. Buy a line-out connector.)
The HD600 is beautifully built and wonderful to look at. Its clamping force is a bit too strong initially but it gets better with use. It's now one of the most comfortable headphones I tried.
The sound is exactly what I expected after reading so many reviews over the years. It's very clear, neutral and musical. It highlights any inadequacies of the source material. Low-bit rate MP3s are painful. But it lets you discover your music collection all over by bringing out the details you never noticed before.
I also use it with my computer sometimes. I connect it directly to an external soundcard (Creative Audigy 2NX USB with separate power) and it seems to drive HD600 adequately. I might purchase a dedicated DAC unit later. Also on the wish list is a balanced rig (amp & cable with XLR connectors). It costs about US$2000 but it's supposed to make HD600 sing. The question is whether I can justify the expense to my wife. :)
Great sounding cans.......2007-10-19
As a New York recording a mixing engineer I've had the opportunity to listen to quite a few pairs of headphones. The Sennheiser HD600s are the clearest, fullest, and most balanced headphones I've heard so far. While they wouldn't work for a performer in the studio because of the open-air design and considerable leakage, they have become a must-have as a mixing reference, especially when mixing in a new and unfamiliar room.
Grado makes some wonderful headphones that sound nearly as good as the HD600s but the up-against-the-ear design makes them uncomfortable after less than 15 minutes, whereas the HD600s, even with their snug fit, are still very comfortable for long periods of time.
If you know of a better pair of headphones, I want to know about them!

These are the best headphones you can buy. They are better than the HD 650. As a professional musician, I am always amazed as I travel around the world to recording studios and radio broadcasts that these headphones are everywhere. Beautiful, balanced sound & exceptional clarity.
THE BEST @ A SOMEWHAT REASONABLE COST .......2007-09-10
Ok, 600 hd phones sound real good. They are comfortable and velvet ear cups prevent sweating. Can be listened to without headamp but will lack bass on Ipod and portable compact disc players.
This is all the headphone you will ever need. I paid $275 on Amazon for these phones and was not willing to buy the NEW 650 hd ones for around $60 more at J&R Music world. I have heard they have a hyped up bass response and are not as balanced as the 600 HD.
If you don't want to spend this type of money, buy the 595 hd or 555 hd, they will be vey pleasing & comfortable to your ears @ MUCH MORE REASONABLE PRICES!

I've been a professional musician and recording studio owner for more than 35 years. Nothing in my extensive experience with high fidelity sound had prepared me for what awaited my senses after I put on my brand new HD 600's and a CD I thought I knew well after literally 100's of listens. The bottom line is this: The Sennheiser HD 600's will most likely give you the best and most satisfying listening experience of your life. Period! Build quality is very strong and perhaps due to the fact that these phones are not made in China, but in Ireland of all places. (no offense to Chinese manufacturing) Do your homework and research the 600's online. Every good thing you read about them is TRUE! No kidding! Yes, Sennheiser does make the 650's and yes, they are supposedly a slight improvement over the 600's, but unless you are going to be using an esoteric CD transport and specialized headphone amp, chances are you would never notice the difference. The only other Sennheiser model that can really outdo these phones cost in the neighborhood of 12 thousand dollars.. So for under $300 , you just can not go wrong. Do they really sound that much better than Bose Tri-ports or 99 dollar Sony's ? The answer is, YES YES YES ! I have wasted many years listening with inferior headphones and now look forward to many years of superior music reproduction and many happy hours of pure sonic bliss (yes , I actually said that) listening to my newest most prized possession, the Sennheiser HD 600's....
