I'm not an audiophile.......2007-11-25
So if you want technical stuff, you probably want to look somewhere else. What I know is that this is one of the few headphones that I find really comfortable. I've been able to wear these for about 4 hours at a time without having to give my ears a break. The sound quality is, from an unprofessional point of view, flawless, although not perfect. It doesn't block sound completely, but I actually wanted my headphones like this, so I can hear if someone's knocking on my door if my phone is ringing, so that is actually a plus for me (although sometimes I still won't hear it because I'm playing music too loud).

I had the Sony MR V700DJ for almost 2.5 years and before that I had the MDR V250V, again, for 2.5 years.
I bought these because of:
1. Low Impedance. Even the smallest mp3 player can drive these without any problems.
2. Great frequency response
3. Around-the-ear/Circum-aural comfort
4. Great experience with previous Sony headphones.
Pros:
1. Blocks outside noise pretty effectively.
2. Sounds as good as the V700DJ which are at $50 more expensive on the List price.
3. Amazing circum-aural comfort. I can't imagine going back to the V700. I can see an entire movie without realizing they are on.
4. The texture type cord is super light and manageable.
5. Instead of having one long cord they finally had the sense to split it up and provide an extension instead.
Cons:
1. HUGE! Didnt expect them to be so big. They dwarf the V700s.
2. Feels flimsy/cheap. The cushions are very cheap compared to the superior leatherette of the V700s. In fact its the same material as the MDR-V250's.
Final Note: These are NOT the fold-and-carry type of headphones. In fact they dont come with a case supplied.
In summary, I am pretty satisfied with these headphones. I would have given these a 4.5 star rating if that was possible.

I've owned these headphones for over a year now, and they still blow my mind away when I put them on. I primarily listen to Trance and Rock music. The lows hit very well, while the sound of the high-hat is still crisp. Yes, they're big, but once you put them on, you will realize how well they're designed to fit. If you're looking for an amazing set of headphones, pick these up.

I'd give these a 4.5 if I could. Only a few minor nitpicks keep me from giving it a full blown five (no mic or inline volume control, leatherette ear pads make me sweat...). These are very large but fairly light and have excellent sound quality. I wear them for upwards of 6 hours all the time and they still feel good.
The best mid-priced headphones, period.......2007-09-15
Ever since picking up an MP3 player, I've been wanting a good set of headphones. I'm a traditional over-the-head kind of guy, as I don't like earbuds. Not wanting to invest $300 in headphones, I came across Sony's MDR-XD400. I waited quite some time before buying them as I shopped around - it's surprising to see how few traditional headphones are actually available. I'm not interested in 'DJ-style' headphones... just give me something simple! I finally bought these and I have to admit, I was a little disappointed when I opened the box. They seemed cheap and flimsy..... until I put them on and listened to them. Wow, talk about sound reproduction! I listened to samplings of everything from Jack Johnson to Metallica to Iced Earth to Sugar Ray - you could hear every note that Jack Johnson was plucking but Matthew Barlow's distinctive voice sounded perfect. I wear glasses and have had these on my head for hours at a time with little fatigue. They are very lightweight which may make you think they are cheap, but they are sturdy. I keep mine on "Movie" as the bass is stronger at this setting.
They are not as good as $300 headphones - but they are the best under-$100 headphones I've ever listened to. And they are loud - I'm very surprised at the volume level these headphones pump out. No 3rd-party booster needed. At less than 1/4 volume, I can hear the music fine but can still hear co-workers when they need to ask a question. Yes, you will get some flack from friends/co-workers at how they look on your head. Let them make fun, and let them pay too much for their headphones or earbuds... you shouldn't be worried about what they think anyway!
