Very Nice Cans.......2007-09-19
I purchased these from Audio Cubes through Amazon. I received them in about 5 days (USPS missed me the first time they tried to deliver). These are my 7th pair of relatively high quality earphones and earbuds.
Based on listening, I would give them 5 stars. I also have the Sennheiser HD 280 pros, an old set of Sony MVR 6s, a relatively new set of Beyerdynamic DT-880s, and both Etymotic ER-4p and ER-6 earbuds.
First, I think the A-T 900s are the most comfortable earphones I have worn. Sound is very good. Certainly better (to my taste) than either the Sony MVR 6 of the Sennheisers 280s, but of course the A-T's cost twice to three times as much. I think both the MVR 6 and the HD 280 are good phones for the money. However, the A-T 900 is just a better set of cans.
Compared to the DT 880s, I find them different but both are excellent. The Audio-Technica phones have more emphasis on bass but are not as crystal clear as the DT 880s. I listen to (in rank order) jazz, folk, classical, blues, and classic rock. Probably 70% or what I listen to is jazz.
My initial impression is that I will prefer the A-T 900s for jazz and the DT 880s for classic and folk.
Certainly for the price difference -- unless you are going to primarily listen to classical and have a headphone amp or are going to use the headphones only with a shelf system with a good headphone output circuit -- I would suggest the A-T A900s (which you can get for about $80 less through Audio Cubes if you don't mind delivery from Japan). I also considered the Sennheiser 595 and 600 phones but wanted something I could listen to in bed without keeping my wife awake. If being sealed is not an issue, the Sennheiser phones are rated as excellent and I hope to pick up a pair sometime.
The other option for someone who can purchase only one set of phones or buds is the ER-4p. I have used mine for 6 or 7 years. The Etymotics provide about 30 db of isolation and have excellent sound. I have used mine at the gym, mowing, and riding a motorcycle (you have to wear earplugs riding a bike or you will quickly have hearing damage from the air flow through your helmet). However, I don't like earbuds for listening while sitting in my house reading or writing.
So for a set of sealed cans, I think the AT ATH-A900 phones are an excellent choice. For jazz, the SENN 280s are also very good but I find them uncomfortable for extended wear. The A-900s are very large but light and do not put pressure on the center of your head.
Audiophile worthy headphones for home or studio use.......2007-01-21
Brief summary of the following review:
Pros:
--Incredible, balanced sound--particular strong highs and lows
--40 ohm impedance means small electronics (MP3 players, etc) can easily drive these cans, unlike many competing models from other manufacturers
--Very comfortable; easily wearable for long periods of listening
--Sound is not fatiguing at all
--Gold plated mini plug with included 1/4 in adapter that screws on securely
--101db sensitivity (very, very good)
--Very little noise bleed; you won't disturb others in the room
Cons:
--Ears do get warm after lengthy listening periods (as with almost all closed headphones)
--Again, as with all closed headphones, the sound is not as expansive as high end speakers or high end open air dynamic headphones
--Mids are slightly recessed in comparison to the highs and lows
Overall: These are amazing headphones that don't need a headphone amp to sound great, even from lower-power or portable audio devices
Longer review:
For Christmas I purchased my father a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones, specifically so he could work at his desk in his home without disturbing anyone else or being disturbed himself. I had an opportunity to give those headphones a trial run, and was impressed with their musical capability, although their performance on movies or games left something to be desired.
Since I have no high end cans since my last pair of Sony cans broke after years of abuse as I worked at a radio station, I decided it was high time to get myself a quality pair. I did a lot of research, and initially settled on the Grado S80, Grado S125, Sennheiser HD595, or Sennheiser HD600 as my main options. I had a chance to listen to the HD595's at an electronics store and liked them, although not as much as I had hoped given their price (I felt like they colored the music a bit). The Grados were appealing, but I was turned off by the many complaints different users had about their comfort. All the options, except perhaps the S80s, would have required a headphone amp to properly drive them--especially the Sennheiser cans (the HD600s and HD650's have very high ohm impedance ratings, which means you almost have to have an amp, adding at least another $100 to their price). The Sennheisers were also all open air, which, while appealing in terms of the greater soundscape offered (in theory) by such a design, would not have worked well if I ever wanted to listen in a room with others (which was very likely to happen).
I was contemplating just "settling" on the Grado S80s (since the S125s pretty much required an amp), and perhaps buying a set of thicker ear covers (offered online), when I turned up a couple profession reviews on Audio Technica's ATH-A900 headphones. They seemed to offer everything I wanted in one package. The low impedance rating meant my MP3 player should be able to drive them without difficulty. The 101db sensitivity was very impressive, especially considering my Infinity Beta speaker setup "only" clock in with 91db sensitivity. The listed frequency response range was fantastic--5hz to 40,000hz. And the reviews I could find for the A900s were uniformly glowing, discussing their amazing comfort and excellent sound.
So, I took a risk and bought them based only on specs and reviews, something I usually don't like to do with audio equipment, because our sound tastes are all so idiosyncratic.
I need not have worried. The A900s are spectacular. My MP3 player has no trouble driving them, able to reach much higher volumes than I would ever normally listen to. They are very comfortable, and their unique floating design works very well, although at first I admit I was worried they were going to sink slowly off my ears (they haven't). I've used them with my MP3 player, through my PC, and through my Yamaha receiver, and they have performed excellently in all scenarios. The highs and lows are particularly clear and clean; the mids may be slightly recessed, but I would guess few average listeners would ever notice (I suspect the only reason I noticed was I had been primed for this by other reviews I read).
I've also been impressed with the soundstage: although not as expansive as music running through my Beta speakers, and perhaps not as wide as an open air set (which, if you wanted, could be found in the ATH-AD900s by Audio Technica), the soundstage still felt wide enough, and very accurate in localizing sounds. To try to paint a picture of what I mean, you could imagine a good set of home theater speakers or an open air set of headphones as roughly equivalent to sitting in the front row of a concert. These closed 'phones, on the other hand, seem to put you right up on the stage with the musicians. Which way you prefer is up to you, but, again, there is an open air version of the A900s available should you want to go that route (though they tend to be more expensive and have a slightly inferior frequency response rating).
Having listened to a wide variety of music (metal, rock, jazz, classical), played a couple computer games (Prey, Half Life 2), and watched parts of some movies (Blade 2, Matrix Reloaded) on these headphones, I can unquestionably recommend them for anyone who is looking for a pair of accurate, comfortable, closed headphones. I have no regrets buying them.
As a less expensive alternative, the ATH-A700s are supposed to be very capable headphones as well.
Excellent Sound / Fit.......2006-09-16
These really are fantastically well made and ergonomic cans, especially for extended use. My only issue is that they are just a tiny bit too heavy, otherwise they are great.
The best headphones I've ever listened to!.......2006-06-10
I bought these headphones almost 3 months ago from an authorized dealer by the name of MusiciansFriend.com and they are absolutely the best headphones I've ever listened to! (if I could rate these headphones higher than 5 stars, I would). I spent countless hours researching headphones reviews before deciding on this pair. The sound is truly amazing. People have raved about these headphones on various web sites. Please bear in mind, though, that $250.00 is a lot of money for a pair of headphones; but, if you can afford them, they're definitely worth the money.
I use my headphones with my iPod Nano and one of the main reasons I chose these headphones over other headphones is that they are rated at 40 ohms (now, I don't know too much about ohms, but from what I understand, the lower the # of ohms, the better, especially when you're not using a headphone amplifier). Many of the reviews I've read online have talked about how you have to listen to many, many hours (sometimes 80+ hours) of music to truly break them in and get the ideal sound, but the headphones have sounded terrific to me since day one. I can hear every single note with these headphones, there's no background hiss, and since they're closed headphones, people around me won't be disturbed when I use them. They are rather large and bulky, however, as they cover your entire ears (and maybe even more).
I haven't had a single problem with my headphones since purchasing them (although I haven't used them that heavily -- I would estimate that I've used the headphones about a dozen times since buying them).
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want the warranty to be valid, you must make sure you purchase the headphones from an authorized Audio-Technica dealer (to find out if a dealer is authorized, you're best off contacting them directly, as I did to find out that [...] is indeed an authorized dealer).
Good balance of product vs cost.......2005-11-08
I did a fair bit of research before buying these cans. I went with these because of a few reasons. 1. Audio-Technica makes some the best headphones out there. 2. The pads were over ear, which is THE only way to go if you listen to music more than an hour at a time. 3. The frequency response was great (5-40,000 Hz), great lows AND highs. 4. Construction was strong and of good quality. 5. All the reviews I read were good or great! You can buy less expensive cans but don't expect the quality to be the same. And you can spend more and get more. But for the price, you get a good deal on these. If your still shopping around I'd recommend reviewing my top 5 against anything out there. Oh, and look to see when they were released. Newer technologies usually have a better product, (usually). Good luck.

Best TV I ever purchased!!.......2007-12-23
I received this TV yesterday, and right out of the box it blew me away!! The picture is absolutely stunning. If you are looking for an excellent RPTV, you will not go wrong with this one. It's one of the best investments I've ever made.
And Eagle delivery was excellent as well. They were courteous when they called me to set up a delivery time, and the two drivers were also friendly and courteous. The whole purchasing process from Amazon was excellent from start to finish.
PC input problem.......2007-12-22
I am really happy with my purhase so far, the picture looks great. My only problem with the TV is that it cannot do 1:1 pixelmapping in 1080p when I hook up my computer to the TV. The picture looks distorted, certainly not 1080p.
If you are planning to use this as a computer monitor, go with something else.
Three Dimensional Image.......2007-12-21
I work in the broadcast/post production industry and see HD Video every day on high quality studio displays that are designed to accurately reproduce color and show imperfections and detail in signals.
When I started looking at displays for my own basement I looked for accurate color, clarity in motion for sports, a theater mode to make DVD movies look and feel like they do in the theater.
I looked at LCD, Plasma and Projection TV in my quest for a new TV. The Sony A series was a clear winner as it delivers and excellent picture, 120hz image processing and plenty of inputs.
No matter which size you choose, this series is a winner.
How did I watch TV before?.......2007-12-17
I just bought the TV yesterday. It is Amazing. Everything looks great on it (SDTV/HDTV). With my xbox 360 (component), it looks great. I now need to pick up a VGA cable so I can go up to 1080p for my HD add on. The only draw back is that there is so many settings. I am going to have to go through it but everything looks good with the default settings. There are very few projections that have this amount of connections. This is the best all around TV for Games, movies, and TV
