The Value of LCD TVs
Aside from their obvious aesthetic value, LCD TVs are much more practical in the home than CRT (tube-style) televisions. They take up a smaller footprint, and thus use up less floor space in the room. Also, LCD TVs are lighter and easier to move around when cleaning or redecorating. The 19HLV87 is only 3.5 inches deep and weighs less than 20 pounds. Best of all, LCD screens use less power than CRTs and plasma screens.

This screen also has a pixel resolution of 1440 x 900 -- which qualifies it to display 720p HDTV images. A built-in comb filter reduces digital artifacts produced by signal noise, making for more detailed images.

Full-Featured DVD Player
The 19HLV87 includes an integrated DVD player compatible with several disc formats: DVD Video, CD-R, CD-RW, VCD and DVD-R. This player is also DivX home theater certified, which means it display popular Internet video formats, such as DivX, AVI, and MPEG4. Similarly, MP3 and WMA-encoded music files recorded to disc will play nicely.

An interesting feature of this player is Digital Picture Zoom, which allows you to select and magnify an area of either freeze-frame or motion video.

The set has a built-in digital television tuner, so out of the box it can receive digital broadcast ATSC signals and QAM signals used by most digital cable providers. Toshiba's StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. Great LCD TV with some minor flaws.......2007-12-21

I wanted something to replace my old 20" CRT. After exploring some of my options, this TV was probably the best deal I could find within my price range.

480i (ATSC and NTSC cable) is fair. Do not expect perfect results on any LCD running at a resolution under its maximum. Colors, specifically red, are very brilliant. That is what really caught my eye when comparing to others within a store. I have noticed some dark scenes sometimes have a greenish tint to them, but this also depends on what you're watching. Audio is fair. It's much better than say my computer LCD's speakers, but I'd strongly suggest getting some alternative audio. The remote control is very powerful and works at most any angle within the same room. Buttons can be a bit hard to find but nothing overly complicated...

The built-in DVD player is pretty fair. I think it only displays at 480p, but it's not too noisy and seems to search rather quickly. I have another DVD player I connected using HDMI and upscaled to 720p. The picture seems much more clear and that green tint mentioned is almost non-existent.

Connectivity is a weak point of this TV... There are no outputs what so ever (besides optical for the DVD player). Input is all located under the rear of the TV with no front or side RCA or S-Video jacks. It had a pair of RCA/S-Video jacks, a single HDMI, and a single component input.

The viewing angle of this TV is pretty poor as well. Forget laying on the floor and watching it. It is even noticeable darker while viewing while laying on my bed. For the most part this isn't much of a problem, but very dark scenes could prove difficult to see.

All in all I'm very happy with my little TV and would strongly suggest it to anyone looking for one around this size.

Bad quality.......2007-12-15

I bought this TV/DVD combo a few months ago. First, it swallowed my DVD and refused to give it back. I had to return it to the store for replacement and pay for the lost DVD to Netflix. Now, after about six months, the replacement unit is also broken - it is stuck on channel 5 (Fox, to make matters worse), and refuses to change the channel. I am trying to send it to Toshiba for repair, but their website does not make it easy - the warranty information section sends you to (nonexistent) user manual, and there is no number to call. Don't buy it. Over the years, I owned several TV model - this is the first one to break, twice!

I placed a comment on another review here stating that we also had problems with the component cable hook-ups. We returned our first Toshiba for an identical one and had the same problem; the hdmi hook-up was fine, so we just gave up on the component hook-up. We also felt the picture was washed out compared to our larger Sharp LCD TV, but we weren't expecting the little 19" combo to measure up to that. We preferred the design and look of the Toshiba cabinet to the high-gloss Sharp, and we liked the ability to adjust the tilt. And after reading reviews on many sites we saw that the Toshiba was rated more highly than the Sharp, so we decided to just stick with it. However, when a second cable guy commented on the poor quality of the picture, we decided to give up on Toshiba and try the Sharp. We exchanged it several days ago, and we couldn't be happier. The Sharp was incredibly easy to hook up, the picture is much, much better (crisper, better blacks, more contrast) the sound is comparable, the time it takes to change channels is comparable (many people have complained about that; it seems the same on all these new tv's to us). I still don't like the high-gloss cabinet, and I do wish it tilted, but we are so glad that we finally gave up on the Toshiba and went with the Sharp.

Product reviews on Amazon were bad, but were good on Circuit City. It was cheap ($300) on Amazon, so I went for it. I have returned it twice to repair depot and it still doesn't work correctly. I bought this panel to mount in the kitchen. I mainly wanted a TV but liked the built-in DVD option and thought it would come in handy. TV is great, HD reception over air is pretty good actually. It was returned for the same thing both times--the DVD player does not work. I kept it because it is the "thinest" monitor w/ an integrated DVD that I could find. Even so, the DVD player works intermittently. Insert disc, plays for 15-20 minutes then freezes. If you eject and re-insert DVD, it says "Not Valid Disc." If you unplug the TV for an hour, it sometimes will recognize the DVD again. These are commercial DVDs--not copies I'm talking about. I cannot get it to play a full "out of the box" commercially available DVD the whole way through w/o freezing and getting the "No Valid Disc" error. Toshiba repair depot fixed it twice and I still have same problem. Only reason I have not sent it back altogether and looked elsewhere is that it fits exactly into the spot in the kitchen. And it's a pain to return. I may send it back to the repair a third time if I can get around to it. I am considering a 50 inch for my main panel and Toshiba WILL NOT make the cut.

I purchased this set for a bedroom replacement. It is perfect! The picture is clear and it is a nice bonus to have a DVD player installed. The only negative was incomplete instructions for setting up the HD features. Once I managed to figure that out, no problems at all. I bought this set based on the Consumer Report recommendation and I was not disappointed. I also received it very quickly. The delivery man was surprised when I told him it was a television, not a monitor, because it was so lightweight. It takes very little room and makes me want to change all my CRT sets to LCD.
