When I received this 100lb. pkg., I was overwhelmed. After unpacking the box, I decided to tackle it one piece at a time. After following directions for qQuick Set-up, I could not believe what I saw and what I heard. Magnificent sound, beautiful music and what surround sound effects for a HD Digital movie on our 92" fixed screen! I've adjusted the sound with the audessey to perfect the surround sound. When we have people over or even when my wife and I look and listen at a movie, it is mind boggling. We always say...it better than going to the movies! We do not need to go to the movies anymore. No need to. What makes it better is that a Home Theater set-up is more personal because you are in your own home and with the Onkyo set-up...WOW! Thanks Onkyo!

Great Sound, but know its HDMI capabilities!.......2007-12-13

Above everything, this system is a great value that is likely to produce far superior sound and be more "future-proof" than anything else in its price range. It's rocking out my living room.

However, please be aware that the HDMI is only a video pass-through. I rated it 4-stars because of the limited HDMI capability. The receiver will not accept the audio input from the HDMI. Because HDMI is the only cable which will carry a 7.1 HD-surround signal digitally - coaxial or optical will only carry the 5.1 (maybe 6.1?) signal - you will need pair the reciever with an HD-DVD or Blu-ray player which decodes the 7.1 audio internally and has 7.1 analog outputs in order to fully utilize the 7.1 surround setup. I have not seen many such disc players, and the ones that are out there are very expensive still.

Most modern computer motherboards have 7.1 analog output, so my plan is to build a HTPC when the HD-DVD and Blu-ray drives are priced more reasonably. (I also hope that a CableCard 2.0 TV tuner is available for homebrew HTPCs by that time, but that is a different issue entirely.)

Excellent sound quality. Lots of connectivity. Auto calibration worked very well.
Everything you need is included in the box.
You cannot go wrong with this.

I did research before I bought this item and the system is rated pretty high by various sources. I will say for the price I am extremely impressed. The system is a great all in one - many features/options! The one thing I didn't realize is the speakers are fairly large (not huge but larger than I expected). Overall I would recommend.

It has all that you need: 1080p HDMI switching, digitial audio inputs (coax and optical) that can be assigned to any input. Also the Auto Calibration feature allows you to set up the speakers easily.

I did a lot of research when I bought this system. amazon definitely had the best price and FREE shipping and it got here almost 2 weeks earlier than I expected it. I had Polk and Bose speakers, but the Onkyo's sounded just as good if not better and they handled more power. I was disappointed that it was only a HDMI pass through and not an upcoverter, but it still worked great. People also said that you only need 5.1 and not 7.1, but this system will simulate 7.1 for stuff that only has 5.1. So you get great sound in the rear 2 speakers. I have a PS3 and games are amazing with this system. This is the 1st subwoofer I've had and it is good, but not great, but not bad enough to want to replace it. This system is in my basement and the bass is good, but upstairs it rocks my house. It might have something to do with my carpet being over concrete and not wood flooring so the bass waves don't travel well in the basement.

Overall, I'm thrilled with this system and would recommend it to anyone and everyone. I wanted a bose lifestyle systme, but with that being $1600 and this being $400, you just can't beat it. and I believe it sounds pretty close to the Bose. It seems to sound just as good. If you put them up side by side, the Bose might sound a little better . . . but once again . . . $400

We had a Sony 5.1 surround sound system with JBL speakers. The receiver quit working so we started looking to upgrade. Found this system in Circuit City and liked it a lot! It was 7.1 and would replace our over 10 year old system. As always, you can usually find a better deal online, than in the stores. Amazon had it for $100 less than anybody, plus they had the silver version. We placed the order and it arrived very quickly. The box was beat up bad, like it had fallen in the delivery truck. The UPS guy said if I inspected it I had to accept it. Well, I signed for it and thankfully, nothing was damaged and everything worked great. Installation was simple. It came with colored speaker wires, by we opted for thicker Monster cable wires instead. Let me tell you, this system blows away my old Sony system and another one we had by JVC! We'd never bought anything from Onkyo before but after the quality of this one, we certainly will in the future. We also bought the Ipod dock and even went back and got the Sirius kit. It's satellite radio ready, but you still have to buy an add on tuner (look for the kit with tuner, antenna, & cables). Now we have everything. 7.1 digital sound, Sirius radio, and every song on my Ipod. If you are in need of a new or replacement system, this is the one to get!

I only did a static setup test, ran a movie with the optical audio. Works fantastic. Haven't run through the component or HDMI jacks yet, but it is what I wanted a pass through system. Easy to figure out and if you do not know how to setup a surround sound system, well it comes with a mic that auto tunes your speaker system for you. Very cool. YES, YES, YES.
