By adding a matrix-encoded surround back channel derived from the existing discrete left and right surround channels, the lack of rear surround in 5.1 channel is eliminated. The result - a fuller 360º experience is created…even from 5.1-channel DVD releases. Best results are obtained when Dolby Digital EX is used with movie soundtracks recorded with Dolby Digital Surround EX. Pro-Logic IIx is the latest improvement on the original Pro-Logic and subsequent Pro-Logic II standards. Pro-Logic IIx adds post-processing to 5.1 channel and stereo signals, creating a realistic 7.1 channel surround environment from 5.1 channel movies and stereo sources, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio.
DTS-ES 96/24 Neo6: There are two DTS®-ES™ (Extended Surround) formats: DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 and DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1. The DTS®-ES™ Discrete 6.1 format is, as the name implies, a 6.1-channel system with a discrete back surround channel, while DTS®-ES™ Matrix 6.1, like Dolby® Digital Surround EX™, provides a matrix-encoded back surround channel. There's also DTS® Neo:6, which derives a 6-channel surround output from a stereo soundtrack, and regular DTS®, which, like Dolby® Digital, is a discrete 5.1-channel system, but which uses less compression than Dolby® Digital. Receivers carrying the "96/24" designation are able to decode a new high-resolution audio format, DTS-96/24. This breakthrough allows for high quality, 5.1 channel audio encoded at 96kHz/24-bit resolution to be stored on a DVD-Video disc (or the DVD-Video portion of a DVD-Audio disc). This format is compatible with all DVD players, with those able to pass a 96kHz signal providing the highest quality output (DTS-96/24 is also backwards compatible with older 48kHz DVD player models).

Audyssey EQ: While the convenience and ease of set-up of a matched home theater package is undeniably attractive, many obstacles stand in the way of high-quality performance. In any home theater space, walls, furniture and other objects reflect and absorb sound creating distortion. Designed to work with systems that include speakers, Audyssey EQ is activated by pressing the dedicated button on the accompanying remote control. This pre-calibrated solution was created in the Audyssey laboratories, and the end user does not need to go through the whole process. And while most systems only address frequency response, Audyssey EQ also focuses on the time domain (where most of the problems lie) in the entire listening area. The results are immediately obvious.
HDMI: HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) This high-bandwidth interface supports not only brilliant digital video, but digital audio as well. Up to 5 Gbps of data—more than twice what's needed for a high-definition movie with surround sound—can be handled, with room for future requirements. All this data is kept in the digital domain, as there are no D/A or A/D conversions needed, to ensure the highest sound and video quality available.
HDMI is fully backward compatible with PCs,displays and consumer electronics devices incorporating the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard. Both HDMI and DVI were pioneered by Silicon Image and are based on TMDS®, Silicon Image's powerful, high-speed, serial link technology. Progressive Scan: By ""painting"" an entire frame at once, scan-lines commonly associated with interlaced video are drastically reduced. The result is a spectacularly clear image with no motion artifacts, and details so sharp they seem as if they're etched onto the screen.

Wonderful Results!!.......2007-12-16
This is my first complete home theater set up and I am totally satisfied with my choice of this system. Connections were easy although speaker connections took the most time because there are 7 of them. My initial placement turned out to be the keeper spots. I believe the Audyssey 2EQ speaker calibration feature contributed to the one time placement in the room. First movie watched was the latest Die Hard and it blew me away! Perfect movie to test the new system. Comments from my friends all pointed to how sweet the sound is and even though it was loud, it did not hurt your ears. Very comfortable listening sweet spot. Everything was connected using HDMI. I did need to purchase a longer sub-woofer cable because the one that came with it is too short for most applications. No biggy here. All speaker wires were included but I purchased my own and used them instead(16awg). One HDMI cable was also included so you can save a few bucks by not purchasing (I have one extra now for a blue ray later). Since my HD is connected straight to my 52" Samsung TV and the 6 disc changer is connected to the receiver, there is one more available HDMI connection left. This system offered a very clean look to my overall setup with performance to match! I did add a Belkin power conditioner just for the heck of it. Highly satisfied with everything and Amazon is the best!!!! Everything I ordered came fast and in perfect condition. Why would anyone ever want to buy from their local store. Prices on everything I bought were significantly lower than my stores. My tv was almost $1,000 lower in price. Believe me, if you are looking for a home theater setup, you came to the right place.
Owned it for about 6 months and LOVE IT! .......2007-12-14
We saw this unit locally and it had wonderful sound so we started shopping around and finally found it on sale at Onecall.com during the summer and got a fantastic deal on it. Beat the local guy by over $200 and beat Amazon's lowest price by about $100 at that time even with shipping becuase of the sale Onecall was running at the time. The unit has fantastic sound and set up was easy. We ended up opting to get better speaker wire than what was provided in the box and we went the route of HMDI for the hookup so there are a lot less wires to hook up from the receiver to the TV, cable box and DVD player. We looked around and listened to a lot of Home Theatre units and for the money you cant beat this unit. We had Polk surround sound speakers prior to this which are "supposed" to so great but the sound from the Polk speakers, was like a tin can. The sound from the speakers on this is very rich and easy on the ears even at louder volumes.

This has been an awesome system. Super easy to install and configure speakers using the included setup speaker. Sounds are rich and full with great bass to boot. Highly recommend this system for anyone looking for a theater in a box. Its the only one i've seen packaged that contains components you can buy seperately, i.e. receiver, dvd player, sub.

This system is incredible...almost bought onkyo 5.1, but 7.1 was on sale for $50 more, so I figured why not. Although 7.1 is a bit much for a 15x25 living room (5.1 would of been fine), this is a definite recommended buy for a home theater in a box. Read some complaints of set-up problems in other reviews, but if you take your time and actually read what confuses you in the manual, the set up is a breeze (about 1 - 2 hours). The receiver has loads of set up options, loads of ins/outs, sounds beautiful. Only 1 gripe, and this has nothing to do with this system. I only bought this one because of 2 HDMI in, 1 out-I think HDMI is overrated for now-I have a 720p/1080i lcd, and I know HDMI excels at 1080p, but 1080p is only available with hd-dvd and I think P3-not sure what else, but picking a receiver just for the HDMI ins/outs shouldn't have been the determining factor in my case...maybe I'll think different a few years from now, but for now I see no difference w/ composite or HDMI @720p/1080i. If the bulk of your tv viewing is cable or sattelite, HD programming is broadcast in 1080i, not 1080p yet. Enough on that-great, great buy
