Convenient & good for family use.......2007-12-10
I like these because I find them comfortable, and they are small and easy to carry in my purse to use with my iPod. The other thing that's great about this design is that I can clip one earphone each on two children and let them watch a kid video on the iPod together, when we're waiting for food at a restaurant or sitting somewhere else where those little Sesame street videos or whatever come in handy.
Most comfortable portable headphones........2007-11-02
These are my favorite portable headphones: they are the most comfortable, they filter out most ambient noise, and they sound good enough for my primitive tastes.
I own a lot of headsets for my iPod (I tend to keep them in various places: at work, in my daypack, in the car, ...), so I've tried a lot of different types. These are the only ones I can keep on my ears for hours at a time. They are one of only two pairs that deliver decent sound when I walk to work... especially when I cross a freeway overpass (they keep out the traffic noise for all but the heaviest trucks).
On the downside: the cord wraps even worse than most headphones (because the cable length varies for the two speakers).
One important trick: remember to "clip" tightly - I found it made all the difference in improving overall volume, bass & treble balance, and filtering out ambient noise. Well clipped, these are almost good enough for airplane use (although I tend to take a noise-canceling pair for long flights).
Fantastic for sleeping!!.......2007-03-12
I don't understand the other reviewers problems! I have recently purchased 5 different pairs of headphones trying to find ones that I can use during the night while I sleep. Other brands were uncomfortable, would fall off during the night, produced horrible sound quality, or would hurt my ears. I finally tried the Philips SHS4700/37 and have been sleeping like a baby. They are so comfortable I hardly feel them! I can even roll over in my sleep and they stay securely on. The sound quality is excellent, they even rival my bulky Sony headphones which cost me more than $100!! I would recommend these heaphones to anyone who has problems keeping their headphones on or have problems with earbuds due to ear sensitivity.
Very uncomfortable headphones.......2007-02-04
I think these are terrible was in a retail store and saw them and said hey those look nice so i bought them. Got home put them on and they wouldn't even stay on my ears. Then when i spent 5-10 minutes trying to make them comfortable they would slide around. I would not recommend these headphones unless you have extremely small ears.
Good Fit and Fair Sound But Could Be Priced Lower (3.5 Stars).......2006-12-31
As you know, I am a headphones freak. I try to buy a lot of headphones. The reason this is is because my headphones usually only last a couple of months. Yes, months. I rarely buy something more than $20 because I know they won't last forever. I recently bought an iPod and am happy with it but dislike the Apple earbuds. I tried a pair from Maxell but they were laughable. So, I went to Target and found these and a pair of clip earbuds also by Philips (which by the way are great). These...well, not so great. I thought since they were a bit more pricey I'd get some quality out of these headphones but it turns out that these don't have any better sound than headphones that are a few bucks cheaper. Don't get me wrong, these headphones are good but I thought with the heavier price tag I'd get something a bit better.
They don't sound that bad, if they were half the price I wouldn't be complaining as much. But when reviewing a pair of headphones I have to keep in mind that value takes place here, and that other people might be looking at other models at similar pricings. I have to say I was slightly dissappointed by the sound of these. Again, the sound isn't that bad but at fifteen dollars I'd want more than "isn't that bad". They boast on the packaging about extra bass, that didn't seem true when I plugged these in. They lack that "punch" to it that other headphones have in this price range. It sounded more like a tap than a boom. Other than that, the mids sounded pretty good, and they do have a sharp, clear sound that at least make them sound average on most fuller genres like rock and pop. But still, I can't hide the fact that these don't have the sound I expect out of them when it came to bass quality. They do sound good, but don't have a good price to what you get ratio.
Other than sound, they do feature a couple of good attributes. They are nice and comfortable to wear to me, and I have ears that are a bit on the large side so these would fit almost anyone else. Also, like most other Philips headphones, have a solid cord that could stand up to a lot of torture. The plug is in the "L" shape so the less chance there is of a plug failure. Also the cord design of these are great, the left clip-phone only falls to your neck so it won't hang if you want to take it off.
Although these headphones are very comfortable and seem durable, I'm kinda on the fence of recommending them. They fit well, are durable, have a great design, and have an average to above average sound, and I'd definitely buy headphones from Philips again, but I'd thought I'd get a bit better bass or a volume control of some sort if I'm dishing out fifteen bucks. I'm not planning on returning them, but I'd probably only consider purchasing them again if they're on sale. They are designed well, but just don't have a good value. Recommend if on sale for under ten dollars. 3.5 stars.

Questionable quality in a junk ear clip.......2006-02-28
I picked up this pair of Phillips ear clips, expecting slightly better quality than their lower lines of headphones/clips. I also thought the in-line volume control would be a positive thing. I was wrong. While the sound quality was decent, with somewhat good bass for clips, the overall quality of equipment was cheapo junk. The "in-line" volume control was shorting out, and slight movement of the cord near it caused sound to cut in and out. Not to mention I believe the ear clips may not fit most peoples ears. They were way off on mine, and I found it hard to get a good fit. Most other brands seemed to fit ok.
These sound decent, but suffer from bad quality with cheap parts. I came to find Phillips doesn't even make these, some third party company "Gemini" does. YOu can do better elsewhere, I do not recommend.
excellent sound for the price.......2005-01-13
I got these instead of a pair of Koss headphones that cost almost double. The sound quality surprised me - much better than I anticipated and exponentially better than the earbuds that came with my MP3 player. And it has a little volume thingy on the cord, which I find very handy.
The clips took some getting used to and I think my ears are significantly smaller than the ears the headphones are designed for. But they're extremely comfortable, and a snap to use once you get the hang of it.

Good and Bad.......2006-08-15
This item plays music from the ipod GREAT! The sound quality is perfect, and up to CD standards. There are no problems in that department. The fact that it comes with a remote is also great, even if it is way to small. The main problem with this unit is the radio capabilities. The FM radio is overall bad quailty, with only a few stations coming in clear, the rest are fuzzy and horrible. Plus the suppsoed "antenna" (which is merely a 3 foot piece of plastic coated wire) does little to help. If you're looking for something just to play music from your ipod I would reccommend a much cheaper product called an iBlast. If you want to play ipod music, with an alarm function an have a product with overall style and good looks, I'd reccommend this product. However, if you actually want to hear the radio, I'd buy an iHome or iBoom...they are more expensive but work much better.

Beware!!!.......2007-12-24
Well, I bought this system after Thanksgiving. I really enjoyed the sound over the last year. But recently, the 5CD stocker broke down. The system can't eject DVDs nor can play them... I just can't do anything with it now... and it happened right after the limited 1 yr warranty expired :(
Unreal.......2007-10-05
I purchased this system while I repaired my flood damaged house after Katrina. Before I closed the walls and ceilings with sheet rock I put the rear side speaker wires inside the walls. Somehow my dog got hold of the package which contained the rest of the speaker wires and chewed up one of the wires. The wires to this system have special plugs that plug into the rear of the system. I contacted Sony thinking that I could get a replacement for that wire. Well I was told that I would have to buy all the speaker wires which would cost me 65 plus dollars. I haven't even installed the system yet and had I known that Sony would force me to buy the whole set I would not have bought the system. I will never buy another Sony product again. There are a lot of good systems out there but Sony has left me with a bad taste in my mouth about their company. If I could afford it I would throw the whole system in the trash.
Sony Dream System.......2007-05-15
For the money, it is a great buy! looks and sounds very good. I compared the sound of other similarly priced systems and this one definitely had the better sound (at least to my liking).
Value exceeds the price.......2007-04-25
Just recently purchased this from amazon, a few hiccups with the shipping but these things happen, and since the price online was great and the shipping was free it doesn't hurt to bad to overlook the mishap.
It's hard to begin to praise the quality of sound and picture your going to get for the amount of money that you pay with this HTIB (home theater in box) system. I am by far no expert but I have worked in the car audio industry for 5 years now and have a few friends with expensive surround systems so I know the difference between quality sound, decent sound and bad sound. There is a noticable difference in quality between this and the high end stuff which is to be expected, but for the price your paying this sony system can't be beat. The set up is a breeze and connecting everything is very easy. The sound is crisp and clear. I got my 42 LCD tv a few weeks before this and for a while I was watching movies off the Xbox360. The picture was great but the sound really didn't add up. This system has provided a sound level with a quality to equal the picture. There have been a few times when I have jumped up while loungin on the couch cause the sound was so real. Also if your a gamer pick up an optical cable for the 360 and run it through this system it will broadcast games in 5.1 digital which will change your life. If your a gamer and have digital cable, you'll need to pick up a digital coaxial cable as well otherwise you'll have to switch the optical from the 360 to the cable if you want to watch cable in 5.1
Picture wise DVDs look great, I can tell a noticable difference in quality with the upscaling vs watching a dvd on a reg. player. Bear in mind it is not going to look like an HD DVD or a Blu Ray movie does but its pretty close and should satisfy most people.
Now for addressing some of the critics out there.
It does load really slow and it can be hard keeping track of discs. My point is why would you have 5 dvds loaded in the first place you only watch one movie at a time, unless your marathoning the sopranos or a sergio leone movie night there is no need. I've been keeping slots one and two open for dvd and leaving the other 3 for music which seems to divide things up and makes it more easy to keep track of things.
The sub is way to loud. I'm amazed that sony didn't put a control knob on the sub box, as my previous and cheaper phillips system as well as my computer speakers did. This is the reason why its not a five star system. Contrary to other claims you can adjust the sub. You have to go to the setup menu and customize the setup (this is after you do the auto cal.)
The sound quality for music isn't the greatest, cds sound pretty good but if you hook a laptop up digital music volume is pretty low.
When its all said and done, the quality you get for this system is well beyond the price tag. It has a few kinks and doesn't sound like a ultra high end system, but you really don't need something like that in your house unless you have a huge home theater room anyway. The styling of this system is retro and pretty cool the speakers look great, and the picture and sound are awesome.
Best Buy for the Money.......2007-04-16
I purchased my system online from Amazon new for $369.99 which also included free super saver shipping. I eventually recieved my unit in 3 days. Sound is great for a box system. Easy to install...automated sound calibration feature is slick. I'm using the system with the Sony 52" XBR LCD display also purchased online from preferred sales out of Southern CA, saved over $1000.00 from purchasing in store and included free mount, HDMI cable and additional 2 yr in home warranty. Truly a Dream System.
