2 out of 5 stars The router has quirky problems.......2007-12-11

The card is fine, but the router has problems which we eventually overcame with hours of trial and error and time spent on tech suppport calls, where they knew less about the problem than what I learned on my own:

1) The connection will very frequently drop, until you update the firmware on the router.
2) However, if you update to the very newest firmware, post July 2005, you get other problems, namely: We have an HP Officejet networked to the router, via cable, with its own local IP address. With the newest firmware on the router, the printer's IP address and connection gets dropped by the router just as soon as the printer goes into sleep mode, which for us was after 1 hour. We shouldn't have to have the printer constantly on to keep a connection to the router. After MUCH trial and error, I was able to determine that if I went back several revisions, the printer never lost its connection even when it went into sleep mode.
3) WPA and WPA2 wireless transmissions do not work correctly with this router - the connection will either drop too easily, or it will not connect at all at bootup, you have to do a Repair on the wireless connection in Network Properties before it will connect. THIS is fixed in the latest firmware updates, but the prior networked printer problem exists. So we have to settle with the lesser WEP encryption.
4) Lastly, we have fibernet high speed internet connection, at 10-15 mbps, which the router and card handle just fine, but recently, our ISP is now offering 50 mbps. So we signed up for it. DIRECT CABLE connection to the router does give us close to the 50 mbps, however, the router will not transmit anything above 14 mbps for internet - this is whether or not encrypted wireless is used. The card and router boast 108 mbps LAN transmission, but it can't handle doing 50mpbs wireless internet. I have verified this with other g-mode adapters which are capable of 54 mbps, and it will only meter-out at 13-14 mbps upload and download. Most users will not have this issue, I realize, but I just thought I would point it out. There will be a day when these kinds of speeds will be available commonly, and this router is not the right device for that day.

D-Link Wireless Network Kit, 802.11g, 108Mbps:
I have owned this product for almost 3 years. I have had no problems with it at all. I am not a tech inclined girl and even I could get this up and running with no problems.

5 out of 5 stars D-Link! Affordable and excellent quality........2007-07-06

I bought this to replace my old 802.11b Linksys routers. I was quite happy with the setup and it's fairly comprehensive options for a small/medium network. I was so happy, I use this for my company's 15 user internal network. Decent reception at 300 feet in between cheap/thin walls - maybe 2-2.5" at most.
Bought a couple more for backup in case of hardware failure; especially since I can always use the PCMCIA cards.

5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-05-15

so far, so good. have this for three years now and no problems. ressetting is a breeze, when needed. good connection

3 out of 5 stars good after a firmware update.......2007-03-13

the card works great, but the router keep disconnecting or restarting every 5 minutes, after 2 weeks i just put it away and keep using my linksys, a couple of monts ago the linksys die, so i dusted this one out of the box update the firmware and its been working fine ever since no more restarts or disconnecting

To keep your smartphone's applications up to date, and to optimize the performance of your device, you may need to perform firmware and/or software updates just as you would on your PC. A lot of folks said it would never happen, but here it is: a Palm device running Windows Mobile software. This isn't just any device, either. It's the latest version of Palm's wildly popular Treo series of Smartphones. Everything that's great about the Treo hardware is here, plus all the power of Windows Mobile 5.0. And to top it off, the Treo 700wx is fully compatible with Verizon wireless' EV-DO mobile broadband data service. Simply put, everything you need to do your work on the move, and at blazing speeds, has arrived.

Based upon the venerable 700w platform, the Treo 700wx Verizon Wireless phone features double the operating memory capacity of the 700w, effectively solving a few minor usability issues of the 700w. With added RAM, the Treo 700wx is for the on-the-go person who uses a more robust set of applications on a more regular basis.

Design

Legendary Palm hardware meets Windows Mobile 5.0 software. View features.

The innovative Today screen keeps all your vital info in one place. View details.

An integrated application captures and organizes your photos and videos.
Under the hood, the Treo 700wx features 128 MB of RAM (60 MB available for end user storage) and an Intel XScale 312MHz processor. The design retains the same basic form factor as the Treo 650 with a few changes. Aesthetically, the new Treo has more angular lines and a more professional-looking gray color. At 6.0-ounces, it's also slightly lighter than its predecessor. The button layout above the full QWERTY keyboard has been changed to accommodate the Windows Mobile 5.0 interface, and the screen sports 240 x 240 resolution.

Like the 650, the top of the 700wx features an expansion card slot for SD, SDIO, and MMC memory and expansion cards, and get this: Unlike the 650, the 700wx supports the Palm Wi-Fi card. Up top there's also an infrared port for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. Below the screen, a five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the unit houses a loudspeaker, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera unit. A touchscreen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port, called the Palm "multi-connector" is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.

Calling and PDA Features
Like the Treo 650, the Treo 700wx's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience--only this time it's all handled by Windows Mobile. The hallmark of the Windows Mobile experience is the "Today" screen that summarizes all the important information you need to make it through the day. Here you'll get message notification, upcoming appointments, dialing functions, and a Google Web searching all in one spot. As a phone, the Treo 700wx features all the functionality folks expect from a cell phone, including a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones (polyphonic MIDI, MP3, WAV and video ringtones are supported), a vibrate mode, and picture caller ID. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile combines email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes into a single application that seamlessly integrates with the 700wx's phone functions. Meanwhile, headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth (the Bluetooth 1.2 specification is supported).

Staying productive on the road is made possible by the Microsoft Office Mobile suite, which includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. You also get the Picsel PDF Viewer for viewing PDF document attachments, and the File Explorer application makes it easy to browse the files on your 700wx.

Messaging and Internet
The really big news about the 700wx is that it supports Verizon's BroadbandAccess high speed wireless data service, allowing you to get DSL speeds wherever you have broadband data coverage. And what can you do with all that speed? Surf the Web faster than ever before using the bundled Internet Explorer application, or log into Pocket MSN and check your Hotmail, use MSN Messenger, or browse the MSN Mobile portal. Robust SMS and MMS functionality is built into the Windows Mobile interface, too.

One of the most important tools bundled with the 700wx is Microsoft ActiveSync, which allows you to quickly synchronize your device's tasks, calendars, email, and contacts with your desktop. You also get Exchange ActiveSync, an application that lets you synchronize data with an Exchange server. Syncing can be done via USB, or wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Imaging and Entertainment
Another great feature of the 700wx is that it supports Windows Media playback right out of the box. With Windows Media Player 10, Palm users can finally play streaming and downloaded video and audio content in a variety of formats, even purchased music from "Plays For Sure" supporting stores. You can also keep your tunes loaded on a memory card and listen to stereo sound wherever you roam (requires an optional stereo headset adapter).

The Treo 700wx's built-in camera sees a bump in performance with the ability to take 1.3-megapixel (1280x1024) stills. The camera also features a 2x digital zoom, a self portrait mirror, and automatic light balancing. While the camera is great for taking stills, it can also function as a camcorder, allowing you to capture MPEG4 video to the unit's memory. An integrated media application organizes your captured photos and videos.

And last, but certainly not least, the Treo 700wx keeps the fun going when you've got some downtime with great games. Bubble Breaker and Solitaire ship with the handset, but more Windows Mobile games are available.

Suggested Service Options
To get the most from the Treo 700wx, you'll need to choose two additional service features on top of a voice plan. First, consider a Verizon BroadbandAccess plan, which also includes lower-speed data access in areas where broadband service is not available. If you are a frequent SMS or MMS messaging user, it's a good idea to get an Unlimited IN messaging plan to avoid pay-per-message charges. To learn more about phone options, consult our cell phone options guide.

Vital Statistics
The Palm Treo 700wx weighs 6.0 ounces and measures 4.4 x 2.30 x .90 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 4.7 hours of digital talk time, and up to 15 days of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 800/CDMA 1900 frequencies, as well as the EV-DO and 1xRTT data frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty. Note: The 700wx supports Bluetooth Profiles for wireless headsets, hands-free accessories, file transfer and synchronization with compatible PC's. It does not support all object exchange (OBEX) profiles.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Worst device ever!!.......2007-12-30

I am on my fifth Treo, my friend went through 8 before getting her new Blackberry. I am waiting to finish my service contract to get ANYTHING but a Treo. Be warned! The only good thing about it was that each time it froze, lost sound quality (which is poor to begin with) or erased date, Palm and Verizon were good about sending me a new one (although I would have preferred anything else.) The wx may be better but I am not even willing to risk it.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing BlueTooth Performance.......2007-12-20

I've been using this phone for the last 5 months and really like it when it works right. I've not had some of the problems others have, but I've certainly had them. I've had to perform a number of hard and soft resets on the phone after it started locking up and having application problems. I've since come to find out that you may have to do this from time-to-time when you get a software update. After getting everything straightened out after the resets, all seems to be working as it should for now.

My reason for ranking this phone with only 3 stars is because I need to have consistent hands-free connectivity...Bluetooth. This phone constantly looses the Bluetooth connection. It's very annoying. I've found that every time I get into an area where there's no service, doesn't seem to matter how short a period of time, the Bluetooth will disengage itself and not re-link. I'll find out when I'm driving down the road and the phone rings, but my headset doesn't. Every single time, I have to pull off the road, turn on the blue tooth and re-establish a connection to my headset. It's definitely not the headset as I've tried a number of different makes and models and they all do the same thing. Right now I have the Aliph Jawbone (which I'm very happy with) and it still does the same thing. I've called Sprint and am told this is normal. I find that unacceptable for such an expensive item. I've had other phones that didn't have this problem. This is definitely a problem that needs to be looked into and fixed.

If you're in an area that has good service, and you don't roam all over the country, I recommend this phone. I really think you'll be happy with it and it will work well for you. If you travel a lot and go in and out of service areas, you may want to consider something else. I travel extensively and rely on the hands free functionality so I'm frequently frustrated by the ever dropping Bluetooth.

1 out of 5 stars After 8 months of use.. Please do NOT get this phone! It's bad........2007-12-19

I have had this phone for 8 months now, so I feel qualified to write a review. At first it seems great (the dazzle of new electronics), but I tell ya', this phone is bad news. Dropped calls, poor Bluetooth connectivity, very poor user interface to make calls and to manage calls, and just plain 'ol big/heavy. Some specific points:
> This phone does not like to hold a connection. A side-by-side comparison of another Verizon phone shows lower bars on the 700wx, and dropped calls even with two or three bars showing.
> Bluetooth connectivity is poor. My wife's Motorola connects to my Nuvi with no problem. But my Treo takes several tries before the Nuvi finds it, and then it drops the Bluetooth connection constantly.
> Poor use interface. Palm has not done anything to help the Windows Mobile platform. It's hard to hit the speakersphone button, forget getting to the Dial Pad, and forget about trying to swap calls and put them on hold. Not logical at all.
> You must subscribe to the internet service to send photos, even if you subscribe to the unlimited text/pic messages service.
> No message waiting indicator. The phone tells you ONCE that a message is waiting. After that, there is a tiny icon on the screen, but no flashing light or beeps. This is NOT an option on the 700wx. So plan on missing lots of message unless you like to check your wx's screen all the time.
> Just plan 'ol heavy for the features.
> A lovely echo is prominent on speakerphone calls.
> And the speaker for the speakersphone option is weak weak weak.

I dread picking this phone up for business calls. Palm is way behind and in trouble. I plan on dumping this phone and buying a new phone (yes, at full cost -- it's that bad). Please do not support Palm, as they are doing just the minimum to scratch by. This is one terrible phone.

4 out of 5 stars Treo gets the job done well.......2007-12-15

First of all I should say that I have been a Treo user for three generations (300,600, 700) and Im not a big blackberry fan. I decided that it was time to switch from Palm OS to WM as I "live" on my exchange server. First for all its flaws, WM syncs flawlessly with Exchange and saves me a ton of time. I've never even connected to my laptop. I've also figured out how to save all my email attachments to my SD card and I just plop it into my laptop when I want a large screen to read or work on one of the attachements. Works the other way to for sending files.Like my other Treos, I've abused this one and I've had no hardware problems.
I love the integrated Google search on the startup screen, must use it 50 times a day in meetings to look something up. Another nice thing is that Treo accessories are now available very inexpensively here and on other sites.

1 out of 5 stars battery guzzling brick.......2007-12-14

I had three moto Q's die on me, so VZW's "forced replacement matrix" told the less-than-helpful rep that would be my new smart phone. I am a business user, so the one good point is that Winblowz Mobile 5 does synch beautifully with an Exchange server - when the phone works that is. Most of the time, it was slow, buggy, randomly reset and would literally not get through an entire day. In deference to the poster who said that "the poster didn't charge the battery correctly intially", I would respond please read the manual. It's a Li-Ion which actually works better with frequent top offs. Anyway, I have dumped it in favor of a BB Curve 8310 on AT&T and couldn't be happier. It is amazing to get through two full days on constant email and voice while not having to consider battery life. Plus the form factor of the Curve makes a Treo look like the old fat pig it is IMHO.
