Sanyo SCP-6600 Katana Mystic Black Phone (Sprint)

      Amazon.com Product Description

Here's Sanyo's answer to the RAZR revolution, the SCP-6600 "Katana," a phone that meets or beats many of the RAZR's specifications -- all at a lower price. This phone packs Bluetooth, a gorgeous QVGA color screen, a speakerphone, and a VGA camera. And of course, it's very thin and chic.

      Design
The Katana's handsome, slim clamshell form factor slides easily into a pocket or purse. Inside the flip you'll find a massive 240 x 320, 65,000-color display. There's also a supplementary, 96 x 64 color display that displays call information, battery life, time of day, signal strength and more. The phone's VGA camera unit is housed above this display. Meanwhile, most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button above the handset's dial pad. A 2.5 mm headset jack is also provided, as is a USB data port.

      Calling Features
The Katana's internal phone book can hold up to 500 contacts, and the phone's picture ID system allows you to assign pictures and ringtones to your most common callers. The phone ships with many polyphonic ringtones, but for those times when you want to be discreet, there's a vibrating alert. A built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear, and advanced voice activated dialing makes calling friends, family, and associates easy. Simply say the name or number of the person you want to call and the number is dialed automatically without using the keypad.

A unique call screening function lets you listen to voicemails while the caller is leaving them, allowing you to answer the call if you desire. The Katana's GPS location technology pinpoints your exact location when you dial 911 (where available). And lastly, because the Katana is Bluetooth enabled, wireless headsets can be configured with the phone for total handsfree operation.

      Messaging, Internet, and Tools
With support for sending and receiving text and picture messages the Katana has you covered in the messaging department. With Sprint PCS Picture Mail, you can take a picture anytime and send it to family and friends instantly while on the Sprint PCS Network. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built-into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. You can also use an optional USB cable to provide wireless Internet and email access to your PC.

The phone also supports PCS Vision email and instant messaging capabilities. Sprint PCS Vision transforms the wireless experience from something that's simply functional into something visual, entertaining and highly personalized. MSN Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, and AOL Instant Messenger are all supported by Sprint's PCS Vision service. PCS Vision mobile Web services let you check out sports scores, get your seven-day forecast, check your flight status, and stay up to date with the latest news. You'll also experience full-color graphic versions of popular Web sites.

A number of handy software tools are bundled with the Katana including a calendar, a calculator, and an alarm clock. A voice recorder lets you record up to 72 seconds of voice memos for later retrieval.

      Imaging and Entertainment
As mentioned, the Katana features a built-in VGA still camera with brightness and white balance control, as well as a self-timer. The phone lets you choose from a variety of pre-set images to customize your display and make it unique to you. With PCS Vision's wireless download service, you can reflect your interests with thousands of pictures of your favorite TV characters, sports teams, celebrities, urban artwork, and more. You can also download games like Tetris and Pac-Man for hours of fun.

      Vital Statistics
The Sanyo SCP-6600 Katana weighs 3.4 ounces and measures 3.88 x 2.02 x .6 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3 hours of digital talk time. It runs on the AMPS 850/CDMA 850/CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

      1 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED.......2007-08-29

I have had sprint phones for a long time and was assured that after my last phone disaster the Katana was the best phone out there. Well I hadn't even had this phone a year and it is losing the little rubber attachments to it and it won't stay shut. This phone is a piece of junk.
Since the phone won't stay shut, it also won't keep it's battery charged. I have never dropped it. There has never been a point where my phone should even show a little wear and tear. I am extremely careful with it and don't even flip it open or shut. I use both hands.
The thing that really ticks me off is that it has stopped vibrating. I took it into the sprint store and they told me that it just happens in some phones. WELL IT SHOULDN'T!

I apologize if I'm very heated about this review, but DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE! It wouldn't let me give it ZERO stars.

      1 out of 5 stars frustration.......2007-06-16

I decided to buy a Sanyo phone hoping to be able to use at least some of my old equipment - my previous phone was Sanyo, and it was ok - I'm not a power user, I need a decent contact list and voice recognition for names - that's about all I use.

Here's what I got with Katana:

      1. *none* of my old equipment works (i had 3 chargers, a headset (not Bluetooth) & a USB PC connector.
      2. the headset jack on the phone is not standard 2.5 mm - it's some weird slot requiring a special adapter (sic!) to connect a regular 2.5mm headset jack. This adapter is sold with the phone, but if you lost it - too bad, you can't buy it anywhere.
      3. After I bought Katana in a Sprint shop nearby, I told a salesperson that i would like to buy a car charger. "Sold out" - was the answer.
      4. I ordered a USB PC connectivity kit. After I installed software (yes, it took some trying, you guessed right) - I quickly found, that you can't download nor upload sounds. Why? No explanation.
      5. the keypad on the phone is exactly the same as on my old Sanyo, but the functionality of the keys is *completely* different. Why? Did it become any more intuitive? Resounding *no*.
      6. the user WTL is right: it's very difficult to open Katana using one hand. My previous phone was much better in this sense.
      7. Sanyo moved volume control keys from the base of the phone to the flip part - very inconvenient.
      8. voice recognition for names works ok, but the quality of playback is really frightening. no, functionality does not suffer here, still it makes calling experiense quite unpleasant.
      9. the quality of the pictures taken by the camera is outrageous - even comparing with the camera in my old Sanyo. I don't really know how they managed to make it so bad with 1.3 M pixels. And yes, i set the picture quality to "high" in settings.

1 out of 5 stars text messaging completely unreliable.......2007-06-13

I am very unhappy with this phone. I had a Nokia for 2 1/2 years that worked wonderfully and the best reception I ever got on a phone. I had to upgrade because it was just worn out. I use text messaging and rely on it heavily. I connected a Sprint brand bluetooth to my new Katana phone and stopped receiving most of my text messages, expecially ones sent from another network. This has created complete havac and chaos in my life, that may have caused irreversible damage. I called sprint to ask them to give me something saying I had not received these texts and they are saying they can't, even though they can see these messages had not been received by my phone!

If you use text messaging, do not buy this phone, especially if you are going to use a bluetooth with it. When I went to the Sprint store on two different days there was another person in there each day, two different people with the same phone & same problem!

I guess a 1 star is the lowest rating I can give it

3 out of 5 stars Did not make me jump up and down.......2007-05-25

Bought this phone with new service, basically it's an OK phone with a few quirks.

#1: If you buy the plastic belt clip, you need to use a nail file and skinny down the clip arms that hold the phone to the clip. Otherwise these plastic bits will catch the sides of the battery panel on the back and it will pop off the battery panel. Once I filed them down it works perfectly.

#2: No video capability, somewhat of a downer.

#3: When the phone is closed, the time display in the sub-menu is a little on the small size

It's a decent phone, I certainly would not pay full price for it, it is pretty basic and looks clean. Nice feature: the vibrate function is more subtle than other phones, so if it goes off while sitting on your desk, it won't scare the pants off of you, etc.

5 out of 5 stars The Katana for people that just want to make and recieve a call.......2006-12-19

The katana seems like a really nice phone. I had a Sanyo 8100 for over 3yrs and never had a problem. Infact had two. My wife had one. We never even had to replace the batteries. The Sanyo Katana doe's everything I want it to. It has clear reception, it has wireless technology and can voice dial. That's all I want in a phone. I'm not really sure why people want to be able to make videos, take pictures and play MP3s on a phone. Although the Katana doe's take a halfway decent picture. It's not a feature I have to have. If your looking for a stylish looking phone and want reliabilty I would suggest the Katana or at least a Sanyo. The one thing I don't like doing is holding a phone to my ear while driving. The Katana with it's voice dialing and bluetooth allows me to make a call without having to look at the phone and that's a feature I really like.
