4 out of 5 stars Easy to install, works fine........2003-03-19

This product works great. The only complaint I have about it is there is no mention anywhere in the documentation on the correct way to insert the PC Card. The PC Card will go in both ways, and I had to experiment to see which way was the right way. Other than that, the card works great.

5 out of 5 stars Netgear MA301 is XP Compatible.......2002-10-22

Ignore the Microsoft Warning upon installation that it is not compatible with XP. It is compatible with XP. I use it with XP and have no problems - once you get past the Microsoft XP installation warning. This apparently is a certification method recently installed by Microsoft in order to get additional control and income over the manufacturers. The Netgear website explains all this.

5 out of 5 stars This card works well.......2002-06-03

I spent a lot of time reading the reviews about wireless access points, wireless routers and wireless network cards. I finally decided on the Linksys router and the Netgear MA 301/401 interface card. So, here's the deal. I have a PII-400 running Win98 that is connected to the router using Cat 5 cable, which is then connected to a cable modem. For those of you who don't know, Cat 5 cable is simply the standard ethernet cable. I then installed the MA 301/401 combo on another computer, a Packard Bell PII-233 running Win95. Unfortunately Win95 had an IRQ conflict with the PCI card (MA 301) that could not be resolved. I installed Win98 and the IRQ conflict disappeared.

After getting the Packard Bell system set up, the MA 301/401 would not link up with the Linksys router. I called Netgear tech support and discovered that the SSID on the card must be identical to the SSID on the router. I discovered that the Linksys SSID was "linksys" and the SSID on the card was "Linksys." When I changed the "L" to an "l", the card connected to the router immediately and I was in business.

The Packard Bell machine is on the 2nd floor of my townhouse and the Linksys router is in the basement. The signal, therefore, is passing thru 2 floors and 2 walls. The link quality and signal strength are consistently in the "good" category and sometimes they are "excellent." These are qualitative measures reported by the Netgear card's software.

As for performance, I downloaded a 19MB file off Microsoft's web site and it took less than 5 minutes via the wireless connection.

I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive about buying the Linksys router. The reviews are mixed and some people have totally trashed it. I decided to give it a try, figuring that I would return it if it didn't work well. The same thing for the MA301/401 card; some loved it and some hated it. I was also concerned that having a router and card from different manufacturers would cause problems. It turns out that I didn't need to be concerned at all because both pieces are working perfectly.

Contrary to what others have said, my connection has not been lost and it takes only a few seconds to establish the wireless connection on startup. I have found that the documentation provided with both items was adequate. However, I wish each of them would have mentioned the importance of having the same SSID on the router and the card. I have not talked with Linksys tech support, but the two calls to Netgear went well.

Things to watch out for: 1)The Netgear MA 301, which is the PCI card that plugs into the desktop computer must be used with the Netgear MA 401 wireless PC card. This PC card will also fit in a laptop. 2) As I mentioned, the SSID must be the same on both pieces of hardware. 3)I have not activated the WEP encryption so I have no idea how it will affect performance.

The bottom line: I highly recommend the Linksys BEFW11S4 V.2 router and the Netgear MA 301/401 interface card.

1 out of 5 stars Incompatible with XP.......2002-05-23

Be warned! You may think that wireless LAN is something pretty up to date and that you will be able to use a pretty standard PCI adapter with XP. You can't. The XP compatbility wizard managed to find this card and announce its incompatibility. And this is despite there being an XP drivers folder on the CD.

The version I've got doesn't even run under 2000.

AVOID

4 out of 5 stars easy to setup.......2002-04-22

I loved the fact that this card installed without the PCMCIA card even present and worked perfectly when I put the PCMCIA card in. No messing around with installing drivers for this card, then for that card, etc.

So overall a slick install and a good piece of work.

Nokia 6102i Phone (AT&T)

Amazon.com Product Description

This update to the popular 6101 adds one great feature that many folks today can't live without: Bluetooth. With the 6102i, now you can have the freedom of a wireless headset with this powerful, feature-packed phone -- features such as a VGA camera, a stereo FM radio, a speakerphone, EDGE high-speed data and a whole lot more. On top of all that, you get dual color displays and support for mobile instant messaging, making the 6102i a great companion for Cingular subscribers.

Design
The 6102i's inner LCD display sports 128 x 160 resolution and support for 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover of the handset features a supplementary, 96 x 65, 4,000-color display that can display picture IDs, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The phone's VGA (640 x 480) camera unit is placed just above this display. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's also an input to accept universal hands-free headsets, as well as USB and infrared ports for transferring data to and from the handset.

Calling Features
The 6102i supports polyphonic ringtones, as well as MP3-, MIDI-, AMR- and True Tones-based music ringers so you can program your favorite songs to alert you of incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Cingular's MEdia Net service. Plus, with the phone's picture ID function, you can assign pictures to your most common callers. If you want to be discreet, there's also a vibrate ringer mode. Meanwhile, voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. The 6102i's phone book will keep track of all your contacts, and address book capacity is only limited by the phone's 3.5 MB of built-in memory. There's also an integrated speakerphone for talking hands-free and, as mentioned, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The 6102i is built for powerful mobile messaging and Internet capabilities. With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the phone can send picture, video and text messages (Cingular messaging charges apply). When coupled with the 6102i's camera, MMS opens up great opportunities for robust messaging. Instant messaging via AOL, Yahoo, and ICQ instant messaging services are also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols.

Getting on the Internet is easy with the 6102i, as well. It supports the GPRS data protocol, as well Cingular's high-speed EDGE wireless data service. There's also a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. Cingular's MEdia Net service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

The 6102i also supports PC synchronization standards via USB or Bluetooth, which means you can manage and synchronize contacts, calendars and other data with your PC. Nokia's PC Suite application makes this process a breeze. Other tools include an alarm, a voice memo recorder, a calendar, and a to-do list.

Imaging and Entertainment
The 6102i is designed for flexible mobile fun. The built-in VGA camera, which features a night mode for better low-light shots, captures stills and video clips (video clips are captured at 128 x 96 resolution). Meanwhile, an integrated FM radio makes it easy to tune in your favorite stations. Picture effects and custom screensavers, as well as backgrounds and themes, can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the 6102i is a powerful gaming companion with support for Java-based games. Many games are downloadable via the MEdia Net service.

Vital Statistics
The Nokia 6102i weighs 3.42 ounces and measures 3.35 x 1.77 x 0.94 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 336 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Won't have another one........2007-11-25

So, in the space of about eleven months, I had three of these things. The display died on the first one; got it replaced under a warranty exchange. Was very unhappy to discover that I couldn't just walk into (what was then) a Cingular storefront and get it replaced on the spot; had to go through the rather painful rigamarole with Cingular online -- and I was on the road at the time. Not. happy.

Then, a few months later, something went wrong with the hinge on the second phone. The phone itself was spotless, as was observed by the fellow in the (now) AT&T office where I went, once again, to *try* to get some in-person service. Once again, no dice, *and* I got to observe first-hand how shabbily AT&T was treating their own employees in the local storefront. This time, not even the AT&T employee *telling* them that the phone had clearly not been abused would get them to replace the thing under warranty. Yes, I had to pay for a new phone.

It's some months later now, and the third phone has shown hints of having the hinge problem (won't close properly, display won't sleep). My contract is up at this point; when this one dies, I'll be getting something else. Possibly an LG. (I have observed for myself how tough those puppies are.) Whether I'll be staying with AT&T is the main question. Verizon isn't an option (not available in my area), and is anyone else really any better? We seem to be back to the bad old days of "We don't care; we don't have to. We're the phone company."

1 out of 5 stars this phone is total crap.......2007-10-11

I've had this phone sense January...and it's total crap.

My outer screen cracked within a month of having it, just from being in my pocket. The case has broken off around the antenna, the gray part around the top of the phone pops off, the black and gray coloring is chipping off so i can actually see the inside of the phone in places, and now it wont charge unless i rig up the charger in juuuust the right position and then tape it in place.

My dad, step mom, and my friend also bought the phone the same time as I did. My step moms phone also has damage to the case, and half of the time it gives her an error saying she has a headset plugged and, so the speaker wont turn on and she can't use the phone. She's never used a headset with it, that error just popped up randomly one day.

My dads phone broke so it wouldn't let him dial out, except it randomly pushed the 5 button all the time, causing him to call the number that was assigned to to speed dial number 5 all the time. He had to send it in and now he's on his third one!

My friends phone broke too, the case around it just crumbled! She had to get 2 replacement phones like this, and now shes given up and had to buy a different model.

All of us are really careful with our phones, I had a tiny LG phone before this that never broke, and i'm much more gentle with this one and it just keeps breaking. Do NOT buy this phone!

1 out of 5 stars Useless cheap phone.......2007-07-09

This is my first Nokia phone and will be my last. My wife and I bought these phones little over a year ago and they are both falling apart. The cases are very flimsy and are cracking from opening and closing. I do admit the phone has been dropped a few times but I expect a phone to take a bit of punishment.

The display screen on mine now only works 1/4 of the time. I have to keep opening and shutting the phone to try to get the display to work. It appears that some screw holding the flip part of the phone is working itself lose.

The voice quality is barely acceptable. I would prefer if the speaker was louder and it would be nice if it was clearer.

I have previously used one Motorola phone and a few Samsung phones and they seemed to be a lot more durable.

1 out of 5 stars I hate this phone.......2007-06-14

I've had this phone for over a year now but am not elibible for an upgrade yet, unfortunately. It's been my first, and will be my last, Nokia phone.

There are so many annoying features to this phone that I don't know where to begin. The most annoying is the non-existant ear piece-if it's not centered EXACTLY over your ear canal, you can hardly hear. The volume of the ringer and the earpiece are terrible. If your finger touches the antenna, which is easy to do, the connection becomes poor.

The fliminess of the case is unbelievable. I've dropped previous phones before, as we all do, and have never damaged anything. After just one drop the vibrate feature and volume button stopped working, and now the darn antenna is cracked. The speakerphone option is almost useless-you can't dial or answer a call directly-you can't use it until you're actually on a call and then you have to search for the speakerphone button. And you can hardly see anything on the dark screen.

I can't wait to get a new phone. I liked my old LG.

3 out of 5 stars It's alright.......2007-06-11

I bought this phone becuase of Nokia's reputation for quality and signal. Overall, I'm pleased but there are a few issues. Mostly, the call volume is way too quiet (even on speakerphone). Also, the ringer volume is not quite as loud as I would like. I have gone through all the profiles and have the volume turned all the way up. I wear the phone on my belt so it's not usually a problem, but if you carry it in a bag or purse, you may have trouble. The vibrate is alright - I miss calls occassionally when on vibrate. I was never able to get the bluetooth to work. I know it's not me or my headset as I use the same headset on my work cell phone. Maybe I just got a lemon? As with all Nokias, the menus are easy to use. Also, the signal is much better than my previous phone - a motorola v160. The phone seems sturdy enough. I've had it 6 or 7 months and the flip action still works perfectly with no sign of weakening. I've also dropped it several times with no damage.

In summary, the most frustrating of the above is the call volume. None of rest bothers me and I'm pleased with the phone. I remember volume being an issue on the other Nokias I've owned and I hope they correct this on future models.
