Customer Reviews:
Use it as an access point..........2007-06-23
I used to like Netgear. Great products with excellent design.
But, after moving to VoIP we need a stable firewall/router, one that just works w/o any questions or hickups.
The WGB511 I tried meet those (simple) demands. It sort of "hung" unexplainably when you most needed it. A switch to another WGB511 and later an upgrade to a newer version of WGB511 did not help.
It seemed to happen the same time Netgear went for more "design" and consumer product orientation, leaving their stoic, but realiable, blue metal boxes behind.
I eventually put the Linksys that vonage had provided at the "entry", replacing the Netgear, and it has been running now for over 2 years w/o any issues.
However, the Netgear works great as an accesspoint where reliability is not as important, but I tend to use WiFi as little as I can since the house is fully wired.
Sometimes it works, some times it doesn't........2007-03-24
When the router is working, it works beautifully. It seems that the router will eventually just stop allowing connections (possibly due to overheating). The fix is to just turn it off and back on. The wireless card bundled with the router also seems to be a little finicky. You would think that the card would work perfectly with the router, but it does not. The software that comes with the wireless card isn't great, but it can do the job. All in all, you get what you pay for.
No regrets.......2007-03-20
Contrary to popular belief, I even had a good experience the one time I needed technical support. A few random disconnects, but overall a great product.
Avoid this product.......2007-03-14
I've always had issues with this product since I bought it on Amazon. I've updated the firmwares for both the router and the card but the problems persist.
The problems are inconsistent internet connection. Its easy to isolate since I can connect my workstation directly to the router/modem. And when I do, my connection is normal
I've since travelled a lot and didn't have time to give this back ...
Be warned.
NETGEAR WORKS BETTER THAN IMAGINED.......2007-02-26
THIS ROUTER WORKS GREAT NO MATTER WEATHER HARD WIRED OR WIRELESS. I CAN GO ANYWHERE IN MY HOUSE UPSTAIRS OR DOWNSTAIRS AND ONLY LOSE ONE BAR ON THE STRENGTH. I AM ALWAYS CONNECTED STRONG AND NO UNTIMELY WAITING FOR LOADUPS.

Amazon.com Product Description
Get ready for high-powered messaging, email, chat, and a whole lot more with the ingeniously designed Kyocera KX21 "Switchback." At first glance, the phone looks like just another candybar style handset. Flip it open, though, and you've got a QWERTY keyboard and a large internal display. Plus, features like a VGA camera, support for the wireless Internet, and a speakerphone make this phone far from ordinary. It's a great way to take advantage of all that Virgin Mobile prepaid service has to offer.
Design
The KX21's face features a large, 65,000-color screen with 128 x 128 pixels. You'll also find a dialpad here and a five-way center button that controls most of the phone's on-screen menus. Flip the phone open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard, another five-way center button, and call control buttons. The design allows for calling functions to be performed with the phone open or closed. A horizontally oriented 160 x 128 screen is placed above the keyboard, right next to a speaker that enables the phone's speakerphone functions.
On the back of the phone, you'll find a VGA camera, as well as a self portrait mirror and an LED flash, which can also double as a flashlight. Other design features include a standard jack to accept universal hands-free headsets and side keys for controlling call volume and other functions.
Calling Features
The phone's internal phone book can accommodate up to 500 contacts for quick retrieval of numbers, email addresses, and other info. The phone supports polyphonic ringtones and Virgin Mobile's "Superphonic" music ringtones, as well as vibrating alerts. Voice dialing lets you call your favorite contacts by simply speaking their names, and you can also control many of the phone's features and dialing functions with your voice. Meanwhile, picture and ringer ID functions allow you to set specific ringers and pictures to certain callers. And last but not least, a built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk hands-free.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
Support for basic text messaging and robust multimedia messaging (MMS) are built into the KX21. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun. Instant messaging chat is also supported, thanks to an embedded AOL Instant Messenger client. A built-in wireless web browser lets you surf Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 2.0 sites via the Virgin Mobile Web service. eZiText text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
A number of handy tools ship with the KX21, including an alarm, a calendar, and a calculator with a tip calculator. There's also a voice memo application for recording quick notes or numbers.
Imaging and Entertainment
The KX21 is designed to kick the fun up a few notches. The built-in VGA camera captures great stills and comes equipped with a flash, a five-step digital zoom, multi-shot adjustment, a self-timer, resolution adjustment, and white balance. Because the KX21 supports Java applications it is compatible with many Java-based games. Many games are available from Virgin Mobile's wireless download service. You can also customize the phone with custom graphics and wallpapers, many of which are also available from Virgin Mobile.
Vital Statistics
The Kyocera KX21 Switchback weighs 4.1 ounces and measures 4.25 x 2.05 x .95 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3 hours of digital talk time, and up to 150 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the CDMA 1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
SO SO SO unhappy.......2007-10-30
I've used VM for years now.. and never had a problem with the service. I had one of the first phones they came out with and it was awesome, but old and clunky. I "upgraded" to this piece of junk.
It was awesome for the first week or two. And that's the story of ALL EIGHT switchbacks I've owned in FIVE MONTHS. That's right, I am currently on my EIGHTH replacement phone and guess what?!? It can't upload/download pictures. Some of the problems with the others: randomly powered on and off during use, battery wouldn't hold a charge for more than 12 hours (in standby mode), wouldn't activate, wouldn't upload/download pix (now that's TWO phones with the same problem), won't access VXL.. and I forget all the other reasons.
It's an unbelievable hassle to change phones- switching contacts, losing pictures and messages... a HASSLE.
VM has sent me replacements. Each and every as bad as the phone it's replacing. They won't give me my $100 back that I paid for this junk, they won't give me cash for the $65 in credit I have in my account.. I'm stuck. So for the rest of my 1 year warranty, I presume I'll be playing the game of "send me a new one" until my VM credits run out. At that point, I'll NEVER EVER EVER top up again.
And I've emailed and phoned them many times.. all with no success. Emailed Kyocera also and they won't do anything about this. Save yourself the headache and go shop somewhere else.
Don't even THINK of getting a Virgin Mobile phone.......2007-10-15
Whatever you do, you should never, ever get a Virgin Mobile phone. If anything goes wrong (and with their cheaply-made phones, something usually does), you'll have to face the nightmare of trying to talk to (or email) their customer service representatives. They are the dumbest, least helpful people on the planet. I believe the hamster I had when I was little had a significantly higher IQ than all the Virgin Mobile employees put together.
Virgin Mobile has been charging me for weeks for access to their websites. I've told them five times that I'm not accessing anything (I only use the phone for calls and TM), but every time they get back to me they say: you're accessing them, therefore we are charging them. Maybe gremlins come up while I'm sleeping and listen to MTV on my phone. Or, much more likely, Virgin Mobile is wrongfully charging me money, and no one at the company cares enough (or is intelligent enough) to solve my problem.
I'm looking for a new phone, to cancel my account ASAP, but I figured I should warn people to stay away from the lousiest, crappiest phone company in the world: Virgin Mobile.
What a disappointment.......2007-10-03
I got this phone for my daughter's birthday as an upgrade from her previous phone. It worked great...for 3 weeks. Then it died and I've had a terrible time with customer service. I will have to find time in my overbooked schedule to drive 2 hours just to get my money back...and in the meanwhile my teenager is without a phone. I've used Virgin Mobile for 4 years and until now have been completely satisfied. Now I have to buy her another phone that she won't like as well...and hopefully the next phone I get WILL WORK longer than 3 WEEKS!
Virgin Mobile Sucks.......2007-09-18
My phone worked for three months and then it suddenly died. Thus began my long nightmare to try to get Virgin Mobile to honor its guarantee. Trying to get a Virgin Mobile customer representative to listen to you, let alone solve your problems, is like expecting an elm tree to start producing grapes. Not gonna happen. I've just cancelled my Virgin Mobile service and would recommend you think twice before signing up with a company that has such an incredibly bad customer service.
A better Virgin Mobile phone.......2007-09-01
I've had 2 other virgin mobile phones (a shorty and an oyster). This one is a lightyear ahead of the other two. In addition to the familiar setting/options as the Oyster, which made the learning curve easy for me, I am enjoying it to the fullest.
I have a couple of gripes, so I'll get those out of the was right now: The camera is difficult to get a quality picture (things in motion, extreme lighting conditions, etc) - but it is great for things you need on-the-spot, not works-of-art (see the "customer photo's" for 2 examples that I have uploaded). Also, I read another review where somebody stated that the screen goes on and off therefore draining the battery - Mine does the same thing. And speaking of battery life, the battery seems to drain much faster - but again, I don't expect it to last long with two screens, all the lights, the fact that I have my phone on vibrate 24/7 and how often I use it. The web browser is an option that I would skip unless I am too far from a computer and absolutely can't wait, because it is sloooooowwwwwww........... and very limited. It will allow you to check and reply to emails, if you are very patient. But I used it once and probably won't again. Oh, and MP3 compatibility would be a nice feature that this lacks, I'm a big music buff.
Now the good stuff: I looooove this phone despite the gripes. I have downloaded a few games on it, and they are much better quality than any that I've had on any prior phone. I love the qwerty keyboard; it took a little getting used to, but now I text very fast, about 10X faster than I was able to before because I don't have to repeatedly hit the numbers to get letters and symbols. Although I did gripe about the camera, it does what I need - I own a very nice digital cam so I don't need superb quality on my phone, just functionality (see "customer photo's" examples). The sound quality is very good during calls.
I purchased a leather cover for it and a rapid car charger. The car charger is a remedy to the short battery life issue that I was talking about. The leather case fits snug & uniform and it protects the phone from the elements (I live in WA state, it rains like crazy here).
For the price, this popular phone is a keeper, and good luck finding one! Virgin mobile is chronically sold out, I had to drive nearly 50 miles away to a Target in another county to obtain one. Now that I have it, I won't replace this for a long time if I can help it, it does what I want.
