Fantastic Sound.......2007-12-10
The 4gb T60 is a replacement for my Creative Micro Zen Photo Creative Zen Micro 6 GB MP3 Player Black(which fell well short of the mark). I also owned the iRiver IFP-100, 250MB model, loved its sound quality, fm radio, and microphone (which I used to record class lectures with great clarity), but disliked its small capacity.
To be fair in my review I must note that I do not use the stock earbuds, I own and use both KossKoss "The Plug" Portable Headphones and ShureShure SE110 Sound Isolating Earphone with Balanced Armature Driver, Black, which I also used with the Zen.
Pros
- Phenomenal sound on the T60, especially the SRS profile. There is depth to the music I've never heard before.
- AAA batteries!!! The IFP 100 had AA batts and I loved this feature. I was frustrated to only get 5-6 hours of life on the Zen and have to recharge via USB. iRiver has this nailed.
- Size: the thing is tiny and super light-weight.
- Files: can store files as you would on a USB memory stick, but I have not yet used this feature, though I like the idea.
Cons (NO deal-breakers)
- The interface software is clunky. The T60 worked straight-away with Windows Media 11. I still have yet to get the iRiver brand to work and transfer songs.
- Joystick: I echo the previous comment about the joystick. It could be improved.
- Unbelievably, a lanyard was not included even thought there is a loop for it on the T60. I had an extra laying around and am using it.
- I had some issues with my anti-virus software (Trend Micro) after installation of the T60. TM disliked the iRiver software and continually blocked it. Some minor tweaks fixed the problem.
OVERALL
This is a music player and it does so very well. The screen is functional, but useless for photos. If you appreciate superior sound quality you will not be disappointed. There is a bit of a learning-curve with the buttons and joystick, but it quickly becomes habit.
The T60 would get 5 stars if not for the clunky software.
A good player for certain kinds of use and users.......2007-11-12
A good player for active minimalists (like me) who tend to subject their gadgets to a certain amount of abuse. The T60 is compact and tough, I've dropped mine a few time without injury. iRiver is known for its sound quality, and the T60 doesn't disappoint. It takes a single AAA battery (I use rechargeables)--an advantage if you are away from a wall socket for long periods. The 4GB storage is generous as flash players go. The screen is small but informative, though hard to read in full sunlight. The recording quality is remarkable, considering the unit's small size. The FM receiver is decent, though reception is marginal in outlying areas. I use my player in MTP mode (there's a choice, depending on the firmware you load) with Microsoft Media Player, and it seems perfectly compatible, including good synchronization with playlists and fast data transfer.
I can generally operate the controls one-handed, without looking, which is useful on a walk. The joystick is imprecise; when I aim right to advance a track, I sometimes change the volume, and working through the menu can be tricky--though you get better with practice. If the backlight is off, the first joystick flick (or button push) turns the light back on, the second does what you intended--which I find mildly annoying. My biggest complaint is the long startup time--nearing 20 seconds on mine--when many files are loaded. I don't know if this is a problem endemic to all flash players once they go beyond 1 GB of storage, but it's a problem on the T60. Perhaps iRiver could fix, but at this writing, the company hasn't updated the T60 firmware since May 2007.

Let's face it, sometimes the only thing worse than getting up in the morning is oversleeping. Where do you go wrong? Set it for PM when you meant AM? Can't take that blaring shrill alarm anymore? Stick with RCA on this one. It'll help get you up and on your way with as little pain as possible.

Excellent IF..........2006-12-17
Over several years I have purchased 6 of these,5 for personal use, one as a gift. Fortunately all have kept excellent time. This is an excellent radio if it meets your needs. For me -- I like its small footprint, appearance and its eleven digital presets. In every room I have the presets set the same. It is easy and very quick to accurately change the stations as needed and not have a single radio blasting throughout the house. The sound quality for its size is excellent. // This radio is definitely not for anyone who is not mechanically inclined. For those who are, it is fairly easy to make changes if you use it regularly. Yes it is easy, if not careful, to push a wrong button -- but for me the disadvantages are far outweighed by the advantages!

I must have been stoned when I bought this thing. They group all the time setting buttons on top right around the snooze button. Apparently no one thought to tell these guys that when someone just wakes up, they might not be particularly adept at targeting a single button in the midst of a group of buttons.
If that isn't enough, the method they use to set the time is so non-intuitive, that you have to have the user manual right there next to the clock for reference FOREVER. I think they've actually managed to develop a programing scheme that is humanly UNLEARNABLE.
And finally, the clock gains 2-3 minuts PER DAY!!! One would think that they would have SOME qulaity control that would actually check the clock accuracy as part of the manufacturing test procedure.
Given the incredibly poor quality of other RCA products I've had, I think I've finally been convinced to stay away from their products completely. I'm a little embarrassed it took me this long to catch on.

I'm just on my 2nd one. I also like the features--easy to set the time, 2 alarms, good radio presets, and the ability to turn the lighting all the way down.
Clock #1 gained 45 minutes overnight. I promptly returned it. Last night I tried Clock #2 -- same basic 45 minute overrun. Waking up 45 minutes early is not my idea of how to start my day on an even keel.
RCA--What is going on?
3 strikes and you're out.......2004-01-29
I tried 3 of these clocks because I liked the size and profile of the clock as well as the alarm time display. The first one gained 17 minutes by day 3, the second clock I tried gained 17 minutes by the 3rd hour! I'm currently on clock number 3 and about 5 minutes into it, it has gained 1 second... we'll see what happens over the next couple days. Although after reading the 2 similar reviews I'm ready to look elsewhere. I'm wondering if it is just a bad lot of clocks as we all experienced our issues in Jan 04. Perhaps someone from RCA can shed some light on this.
