Measuring just 2.7 by 1.8 by 0.6 inches and weighing a mere 2.5 ounces, the U10 is about the size of a business card. The U10 plays MPEG-4 Simple Profile (SP) files up to 320 x 240 pixels in size (encoded at a maximum of 384kbps and 15 frames per second, with audio encoded in MP3 up to 128kbps). Video can be converted with a free, downloadable utility called iRiverter.

The centerpiece of the U10 is its brilliant 2.2-inch color display, which also doubles up as the control interface. Unlike the touchscreens normally used on PDAs, the U10's "direct click" feature responds to gentle pressure from the fingertip, eliminating the need for pens and control keys.
A built-in microphone also makes the iRiver U10 an ultracompact dictation machine. Recording quality is freely selectable and is controlled automatically. A built-in FM tuner, complete with real-time clock and timer-controlled recording function, delivers perfect radio sound on the move. It also includes six Macromedia Flash Lite games, including Launch Fighters (a Space Invaders remake), Log Jam, Barn Baron flying game, and Sudoku.
Files are transferred via super-fast USB 2.0, and the U10 is compatible with Windows XP SP1 operating systems. It offers 10 EQ settings along with a user-defined EQ setting, and it offers SRS WOW virtual surround sound for a 3-D soundscape and superior bass. The internal, rechargeable lithium-polymer battery provides up to 28 hours of playback battery life, and it is recharged when connected to a PC via the included USB cable.
Optional Cradle
With the U10's optional cradle, even more possibilities open up as the U10 combines with the FM tuner to provide a full-fledged multimedia alarm clock. It even includes a traditional snooze button for five minutes of extra sleep. When the U10 is sitting in its cradle, the line-in can hook up to other audio sources. Music from the stereo system, for example, can be MP3-encoded in real time and stored on the player. The cradle also includes a remote control.

iriver u10 is an excellent device and has features that no other mp3 player can have all together.
Some of the features I love:
-built-in radio (ipod or similar doesn't have)
-record sound/radio/linein directly to mp3 (amazing..., can record hours and hours...)
-video
-connect as a usb storage and you have the freedom to directly copy/rename/delete any file in it as its another folder in your computer! And you are not bound to an application such as itunes...
-have different settings for song listings (such as list artists, albums, titles) BUT my favorite is that, it allows also you to browse the filename lists (not available in ipod) as in your computer. This is best if your mp3 tags are not well organized!!
-Memory is flashram, so no need for extra careful handling
-and finally; battery life is really long...
only problem might be the capacity (1gb). If you are the one that want to carry all his audio in a device, go for a hdd based device... Otherwise, enjoy u10...
Good Video + Audio Hard to Install.......2007-02-18
Had problems installing and attaching the U10 with Window Media player 10. Called the help desk and it took 3 tries to get someone that Knew how to handle the installation. Most of the people on the help desk have no idea how to help. They told me to return the product and get a new one that had the same problem. Had to make a change to the regastry. Then it worked as promised. However, I had to reinstall the operating system and loaded Windows Media Player 11 and the devise work just by plugging it in to the URL.
Earphones are cheap so I replace them and the music sounds great. Pictures show up chrisp and clear. Games are lame. And I have not been able to convert the anything to the required video format.
Pictures and video need their own utility to download.
The ability to use the frame around the unit to for most of the controls is east to use following the promts that show on the screen.
Poor life span.......2007-01-28
I bought a 512mb model u10 right after if came out and after about 8 months began to have problems with it deleting songs on its own, or when I would delete them the songs name would stay in my playlist and would stop playing whenever it came to the song. I have another u10 which is the 1GB model and after about 8 months it is doing the same thing, I wouldn't advise anyone to buy an iRiver product and if you have one take it back now because it will self destruct. IRiver isn't the only company who seems to have problems with their MP3 players lifespan, average life of a much more expensive IPod is only 18 months. Until someone steps in and insists these electronic companies make a reliable product I am sticking with the cheaper products that services like Napster and Urge offer.

Short life of the ON button.......2007-10-30
I've had 2 phillips universal remotes, 6 and 8 devices (this one). In both cases the ON button stopped working after one year or so. The good thing is it has almost all the right buttons and there's no need to re-program. I agree with the issue that it is SLOW, specially for the learned buttons. Not bad but this time I will replace it with a different brand.

I bought this remote about 8 years ago. It has worked for everything! Magnavox receiver, Kenwood amp, Replay DVR, Sanyo television, Daewoo television, and others. It didn't have a code for my Digix DVD player, but the programming modes were easy to use and versitile, and I was able to program it for that as well... no problem. The lack of a "punch through" feature for audio is a negative, but definitely not something I'd complain about. It's easy enough to hit "audio," change volume or settings, then go back to my main device. Also, there IS punch through for television audio to the DVR mode. In recent weeks, the "on" button finally wore out, but given how old it is, that's not something to complain about either. I liked it enough that I'm getting a new one identical to the old!
Buttons too small, no punch-thru.......2007-09-27
The learning feature is nice, and the price is cheap, but I returned this remote after a couple days of use for several reasons:
1) There's no punch-through feature to allow for certain buttons (volume, for example) to always control one device. If you have a receiver for all your audio, do not get this remote. Every time you want to change volume, you have to change the mode to "audio" first.
2) There are too many buttons and they're not intuitive. You can spend the time to program all the unique buttons from each of your other remotes and memorize where you stored them, but if other people pick up this PMDVR8, they will have absolutely no idea how to work it.
3) Ergonimics are poor. It's small and light, but the buttons are too small and they're placed in strange areas. I mostly use menu navigation (DVR, cable), and my hand hurt after only an hour or so.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this. There are several other remotes in the same price range that have better features and are easier to use.
Inconsistent quality.......2007-04-08
The first PMDVR8 I owned worked extremely well for about 2 years. After it began to fail, I purchased 2 more. One of the two never worked consistently and failed completely in about a month. The other failed in about 4 months of light use. Even inexpensive remotes should last longer.
