Great value but not perfect.......2008-01-02
I was introduced to the Mio brand by my friend who showed me his C320 and I loved its looks. I was able to purchase the C520 for just a few dollars more for what I could get the C320 so it was a no brainer for the upgrades of Bluetooth and TTS.
However the unit locks up when I try to make a connection with my RAZR V3i even though it is on the list of approved Bluetooth phones. This appears to be a common problem from the other reviews I have read.
Another issue is an "eye candy" feature in which it is supposed to show the sun rising/setting in the horizon when the map is in 3D mode. I have yet to see the sun set. Which brings up another problem; the automatic switch from daytime to nighttime colors is about 30 mins late. My friends Garmin changes much earlier and is easier on the eye.
However, my friend also bought the C520 after seeing how it lists ALL the street names where his Garmin would leave some streets unnamed... and his Bluetooth phone even connects properly! But, he says it is hard to hear the other party even at max volume.
Those are all my complaints! If not for those I would give the C520 a 10!
Battery life is so-so at around 4 hours. I think the screen looks fine but the Garmin my friend had definitely lookes sharper at least in day-time mode. Night-time mode looks perfect! I find the accuracy of the maps top shelf and the routes surprisingly accurate. It does have a tendency to route you to major highways.
Overall I think this unit is a GREAT value for the price you can purchase it for. While the extra features can be hit and miss the core navigation functionality is great!

This is a great device for directions and navigation, and comes with everything you'll need to get up and running, charge at home or in the car, and connect the c520 to your PC (not mac) to transfer movies, music, etc. As a navigation guide it's great, and recalculates / re-routes you on the go if you take a different route or drive past where you were "supposed" to go. Also, there's a handy "bypass" feature, so if you hit traffic you can have the device find you an alternate route. Cool bluetooth support for hands-free cell phone interface. All of these are - I think - pretty standard features in GPS units now, but the're fairly well executed on the c520, it's pretty easy to use, and the device is a great size relative to total screen size (think iPhone in terms of screen to bezel and total size). Cool point of interest interface feature: pull up a business listing (POI) in the c520's somewhat out of date listings, and you can have the device call it for you via your linked bluetooth capable cell phone.
Things I don't like about it (reasons this isn't a 4 - 5 star review):
no printed manual
no support for Apple computers AT ALL (not even in disk mode? come on guys...give me a freaking break!)
interface for playing music / movies is clunky and the interface for creating movies for it is a total waste of time...if it's not easy to use why even bother? Ever hear of the iPod guys? give me less needless software, fire a couple of engineers, lower prices.
BAD cell phone contacts bugs: I transferred the contents of my cell phone's phonebook: every contact is named "M"...yeah...thanks...
the map "points of interest" IE businesses, etc, are more than a year out of date and I see no updates to this on the Mio web site, which IMO totally blows. There's all these businesses that are listed in it that don't exist anymore....and more frustrating some that are listed are listed incorrectly - for instance a local german restaurant doesn't come up in the listings for german restaurants; it comes up as "other restaurants" and in the comments notes that it's a german restaurant...uh, what?

The Mio 520 has the best points of interest POI, in the business. The screen display is not very good, mapping is okay, not as good as the Magellen, tom tom or Garmain POI is very important to me, I can learn to live with some of the other short comings

Thin and sleek design, good features(bluetooth handsfree, mp3 player, picture viewer, video player...but that is not you want in a GPS...You need efficient routing...
The GPS routing is not that good...ok my trip to lake tahoe took me through a hilly and extremely steep route, (hwy89)that is not what google says or Garmin says..no matter wat ever routing parameters you set it still took me through that route....
we had three cars and all with different GPS..one with Google Maps...one with Garmin and One with the Mio C520....I was apparently 50 miles behind the others because of the hilly route that it told me to take....
my overall experience with this GPS is very disappointing...

Love the wide screen format and the ease of use of the unit. I just wish there was a way to save a planned trip in memory to be recalled when you want.

Mediocre remote. Inferior to other philips remotes.......2007-02-20
This remote controller was quite a dissapointment. I am using two other Philips/Magnavox remotes that are far more convenient and operate better. This one does not look like the picture (which looks more like the 425 model). It does not cover the equipment I have (while the 425 model does), It's learning mode is flaky and unreliable, to say the least. The range is shorter then that of the 425S. Conclusion: This would make for a nice ornament (It does look nice, and, if you are lucky you may be able to control some devices.
Phillips remote control.......2006-12-14
The remote that you receive is a phillips learning remote but is not even close to what they show and describe. They list size to be 11x4x1 it is really 6x2x 1/2 inches. The buttons are entirely different and 8 of them are not there. I give it 3 stars because I am able to make it work with my equipment but would give it zero for what it looks like.

Very easy to set up. Works with Sony HDTV, Sony VCR, Toshiba DVD and Pioneer Receiver. I haven't yet checked out the DVD thoroughly. The menus work for the TV and VCR. Only drawbacks are that buttons are not lit for use in dark and there is no time display.
Wrong Picture.......2006-10-16
Beware !!!!!!!!! The picture of this remote is NOT what Amazon is sending out. And the one that I received had some buttons with blue printing that can only be seen under a very bright light and at a close up angle. I was trying to get a remote similar to the one purchased elsewhere and this one appeared identical but what I received was not what was pictured. Also this remote is not as powerful as my old one - so you have to point it more toward the device. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AMAZON !!!!!!!!!!!
Not "Universal" enough.......2005-09-16
I have been deparatley searching for a low cost remote that would operate at least one of my two DVD players. I guess I'm still searching... This remote is very comfortable in the hand with good button layout. I would like to recomend it, but I can't. I have two popular DVD players, and can't find a cheap universal to operate them?! One is a cheap "Cyberhome" and the other is a Panasonic DVD / VCR combo. You would think the universal remotes would have cought up to these common players. If you can, check for your specific models codes before purchasing.
