Sometimes, the basics will do just fine. IBM's 412CID Caller ID-ready phone certainly falls into this category. This four-line phone features everything you'd expect in a small-office phone, but it's strongest point is its simplicity.
Like AT&T's 954 model, IBM's 412CID corded unit handles up to four separate lines and includes a data port for connecting a fax machine or modem. Like Brother's CTS-410 Executive Speakerphone, it's also designed to work with phone systems that handle up to 12 extensions. The 412CID's caller ID log stores up to 30 numbers, while the call privacy feature ensures that no one can listen in on your call while you're on the line.
The 412CID provides all the options you'd expect to find in an office phone, including intercom calling, page all, and call transfer. The bundled headset/microphone is adequate, though it shares the same jack as the standard coiled headset. Ideally, it would have included a separate jack, such as the one provided by Brother's Executive Phone, so the user wouldn't have to keep swapping the headset jacks. The phone also includes a 24-number dialing memory. Though that's less than the 36-number memory offered by similar phones, it should be enough to satisfy most small offices.
However, you can't program pauses into numbers entered into the memory. It's the lack of such extras that separates the IBM 412CID from its counterparts, such as the AT&T 954 and Brother's Executive Phone--and both of those units cost considerably less than IBM's list price of $299.99. But if you're looking for a unit that's uncomplicated while still offering the basic functions, IBM's 412CID will suit your needs just fine. --John Frederick Moore

Who cares if it is easy to use........2004-12-28
My office has five of these phones- none of them are problem free. The numbers do not work on a few of them and the sound is terrible on another. I have read through the manual which offers no valuable trouble shooting tips. I called the 1-800 help line and it has been disconnected, the website also no longer exists.
This phone is a terrible deal for the listed price of over $100.

I got this phone for the telephone company voice mail indicator, which other 4-line phones don't have. After about a year, the results have been quite unsatisfactory:
(1) I have replaced three of them because some of the buttons stopped working. They must have fragile switches or something.
(2) Two of the phones will pick up line 2 on speakerphone, spontaneously. The phone will just be sitting there and then the line 2 light comes on, the speakerphone comes on, and then you can hear a dial tone.
(3) Sometimes the phone has a mysterious delay (1-5 seconds) before it will let you pick up a line when it is ringing. I pick up the handset, push the button, try again... eventually, the line connects, unless the caller hangs up first.
(4) Voice mail indicator often does not know when there are no more messages and keeps blinking (there is a way to turn it off manually).
(5) Conversations bleed through between lines.
Looks like buggy chips to me. The phones are "IBM" brand but really made by TT Systems. As soon as I can find another 4-line phone with an FSK voice mail indicator, these are all going in the trash.
