The remanufactured Panasonic KX-TG5576M cordless phone system is expandable up to eight handsets, letting you outfit your house with a bundle of phones without dealing with crisscrossing wires or multiple phone jacks. Another bonus offered by the KX-TG5576M cordless handset is the backlit 1.6-inch color LCD display. Users can personalize the phone's display with any of the preset wallpaper images, or they can download new images via the handset's built-in USB port. In addition, you can activate Picture ID (subscription required), which associates caller ID information with photos of your friends and family or other images. Meanwhile, the display's color icons make it easy and intuitive to navigate through the phone's many features. It all adds up to a fun, lighthearted handset that's far more creative than other cordless models.
This phone system is also equipped with an all-digital answering system for quick, easy retrieval of crystal-clear messages. Message operation has never been easier, with up to 21 minutes of recording time, in addition to such features as a prerecorded outgoing message, remote operation, toll saver, and skip-and-repeat. And don't worry about losing your messages when the power goes out, as they're stored in flash memory for later retrieval.
In addition to the Talking Caller ID, the system offers a caller ID/call waiting combo (subscription required). Caller ID lets you see who's calling before you answer the phone, while call waiting lets you know when another call is coming in. By combining the two, however, users will learn who's calling even when they're currently in the middle of a conversation with someone else. When you hear the beep, simply look at the handset's LCD display to identify the name and number. It's especially convenient when you're waiting for an important call but still have other calls to make.
The handset speakerphone, meanwhile, is a plus when dealing with automated phone systems. You can turn on the speakerphone, put down the handset while watching TV or typing, and then pick it back up when a voice finally responds. It's far more convenient than trudging all the way to the base unit to activate the speakerphone. There are lots of other uses as well, such as putting the whole family on the phone to talk to grandma or grandpa, or conducting a business call with several folks in the room.
Finally, the phone includes a couple of features that will particularly appeal to households with kids. The first is the ability to upload unlimited free recordings of your favorite songs or sounds and set them as the handset ringer. Simply connect the included audio cable to the music source and follow the instructions (max recording time is two minutes). The second is a light-up antenna that flashes when the ringer is turned off. When someone is calling, the base of the antenna will flash so you'll know the phone is ringing. The antenna will also light up when someone leaves a message on voicemail (subscription required). Users can select from blue, green, amber, or multicolor antenna lights, while subscribers to Light-Up ID can link the individual light colors to numbers in their preprogrammed phone books. It's an especially nice way to "hear" the phone ringing after the kids have been put to bed.
Additional features include a 50-call memory and speed dial directory, four-way phone conferencing, dual keypads, three ringer patterns and four melody ringers, and a headset jack (headset not included) that enables hands-free communication. How it Works
Using the Linksys CIT 310 is much like using any cordless land-line phone. "Dual Mode" means that you can either use the device to make regular calls through your phone service, as you would with any cordless phone, or, you can allow the phone to connect through your computer's high-speed internet service and--using your Yahoo Messenger with Voice account--make internet calls

anywhere in the world. A base station connects both to your regular phone jack and to a USB port on your PC. Once you've set up a Yahoo Messenger account, your computer will send your Yahoo contact list to the phone. All you then have to do is scroll through the list and push a button to call the computer of any of your contacts. A separate button connects you to your regular phone service.
To make calls to cell and land-line phones you'll need to purchase "Phone Out" time. Prices vary depending on the country you want to call, but most international calls run 1 to 2 cents a minute. Of course the Linksys handset also makes it easier for friends to call you through free internet services. You won't pay for computer-to-computer calls, but rather than rushing to your computer and pushing various keys to answer an internet call, the handset will ring at an incoming internet call, allowing you to answer just like a traditional phone. The final option is to allow friends to call your internet phone from their cell or land-line phones. For a modest fee (currently around $30 a year) you can purchase a "Phone In" number others can use to call you.
Design
The handset has a nice modern design that feels comfortable and natural in either hand. At 5.5 inches high by 1.08 inches wide, it more resembles a contemporary cordless phone in size and shape than it does a cell phone. While the small color screen has only moderate resolution, it does offer manual adjustment of brightness and contrast. Of course, this phone is meant for calling only--not for viewing email or videos--so it's more than adequate for the job.

Setup and Operation
Users who are already Yahoo Messenger customers, or who are already practiced in the arts of internet telephony, will find the Linksys CIT 310 a snap to set up. If you're new to VOIP, though, setup may be a little tougher, although the accompanying software relieves most of the stress. Pop in the disk and you will be guided through the process of connecting the phone and setting up a Yahoo Messenger account. From there you can follow links to purchase Phone Out time or to obtain a Phone In number. Managing your list of contacts is done on your PC, which then sends the information to the phone when it is in the base station. Once setup is complete the device functions very much like a modern cordless phone--choose from your list of contacts or dial a number and push the call button. We found that within a few minutes of familiarzation with the handset we were able to make both national and international calls with ease.
Connection Quality and Convenience
Let's be honest: VOIP is simply not yet as reliable as a land-line (or good cell connection), nor is the sound quality as high. That said, we tested the phone by making a series of calls locally, nationally, and internationally and found we were able to achieve pretty good, but not great, reception. Calling a friend in London we experienced a lag for a few seconds, but once the connection was established we noticed only a slight reduction in sound quality compared to a land-line conversation. Those familiar with internet phoning are aware that only one voice in the conversation can be heard at a time, making it impossible for you and your conversation partner to talk over the top of each other. To some this can be a bit disconcerting at first, but we found that only a brief warm-up period is required to adjust.
The Linksys CIT 310 advertizes a connection range of about 50 meters between handset and base station during indoor use. Our experience was that the connection is about what you would expect from any modern cordless phone. We had no trouble moving from room to room or to a different floor in the house from the base station, but could not stray too far outdoors. While the phone frees internet phoning from a direct connection to your PC, it can only be used within range of the base station connected to your PC. This is in contrast to a Wi-Fi based internet phone, such as the Netgear Skype Phone, which allows you to connect to the Skype VOIP network whenever you're in range of any accessible Wi-Fi hotspot.
Speaking of Skype, we compared the connection quality of the CIT 310 and Yahoo Messenger with Skype calls. We found voice quality to be very similar, and the Yahoo Messenger service offers much the same functionality as the venerable Skype service. Overall, if you don't require a Wi-Fi based phone, and you can live with having the base station connected to your computer, the CIT 310 provides a dandy alternative to Skype.

works one out of 8 times that I connect it to my computer. I mostly gave up and use my Yahoo on the computer directly. I purchased a kensington blue tooth phone so that I could snip the wires and walk and talk which was my initial goal of purchasing the CIT310 phone. The one saving grace, I was able to plug in my vonage telephone line so that I could have ONE device on my desk. The concept is GREAT, COOL and VERY useful when it works.

It's a pretty cool idea but it just didn't work for me, so I returned it.
The phone kept crashing Yahoo Messenger.
When I'd make or receive a call, it would make Messenger go off-line.
I wasted a lot of time upgrading Messenger and making sure I had all the current drivers (I use XP) for the phone but there was no fix I could do myself.
Complicating matters, I don't have a standard phone to call tech support. So, I just gave up and returned it.
THANKS AMAZON for your liberal and easy return policy. You guys deserve five stars for that.
PS to the makers of this procuct: As I say -- it's a good idea for a product and I hope you develop it. I may still be a customer. For future models, I strongly suggest a more transparent integration of the phone with the Yahoo Messenger contact list. For example, it should be easy to take a number I've received (land line or VOIP) and save it to Messenger right from the phone.
