Sound quality doesn't measure up.......2007-01-09
Poor sound quality - an evaluation from those in the household with fine hearing, as well as my own, which isn't. Seems to be harsh, not clear. We tried it a few days and ditched it in favor of a corded Ameriphone Dialogue XL-40.
It does have some nice features in general but those don't make up for the basic problem

I purchased this phone for my wife, who has moderate hearing loss. The Amazon site product information indicates 40db amplification. The product literature that came with the phone indicates that the volume control adds 15db, and the "boost" feature adds another 15db, for a total of 30db. I will echo the other review, the boost feature is practically useless. I have very good hearing, and even with the volume all the way up, and the boost on, it was not too loud for me. Besides not being loud enough, the sound quality was lousy.
My wife tried the phone for a week or so, and I have returned it.
constant static, awkward.......2005-12-17
I don't recommend this phone. I'm disappointed, since the audio demo on their web site sounds really good.
It has a constant "frying" noise in the background. You can hear people, but it's really annoying and unusable due to this noise.
I bought it for $100 from amazon.com, where it is sold by one of the associated sellers, ds_international.
In terms of features, it says it normally boosts high frequencies, which is where most middle-aged hearing losses are and mine is. This type of hearing loss makes it hard to understand someone if there is background noise like other conversations or music.
The phone has an adjustable volume control. It also has a second feature called boost which is supposed to boost the volume substantially and comes with a warning sticker. That does boost the volume, but certainly not to any level I'd consider dangerous, maybe a factor of two, if that, and it gives the sound a strange tinny tone.
One disadvantage I found after fiddling with it for awhile is that it is hard to pick up. My old cordless phone has an antenna a couple of inches long sticking out of the top. I hadn't realized it, but that makes it easy to pick up when I slide my left hand under the phone to pick it out of its cradle. I do this all the time, as the phone is next to my reading chair. The Clarity phone's antenna hardly protrudes at all, so your left hand has no purchase on the phone, and you have to be facing the phone and pick it up with your right hand, then change it to your left hand to use (assuming you're right handed.)

Another disposable printer.......2007-12-10
I've had pretty good luck with Brother printers. Okay speed, good print quality, last awhile. Drum units are expensive though. Once it's time to replace your drum, almost cheaper to just toss the thing and buy a new one. Buy a new drum, or spend an extra $30 and get a new printer with a new drum, new toner cartridge etc...hmmmm, tough choice.
Horrible, Stay Away.......2007-11-29
This is my second Brother HL-5240, the first started screaming when I tried to print and then just stopped. Not working at all, I called a local repair shop who took it back, replaced the drum, and about every other working part, and it still was the same, screaming.
They said I had to call for a replacement myself, which I did, and then they proceeded to make me go through a bunch of diagnostics which was a waste since the repair place already had done all that, plus so had I in trying to figure out if I could repair on my own. Very bad service. Finally they agreed it was a wreak and sent a replacement.
Now this replacement made the same scream the first time I set it up and printed, but that thankfully stopped.
I've owned Brothers in the past and they cause a power surge when you first send the print job occasionally bringing down the circuit breakers. I have to be so careful every time I print I'm praying to the power Gods just to let me have one page print without mishap.
The duplexing works, usually, but when it doesn't in creates quite the mess of crumpled paper. No rhyme or reason as to why it works sometimes but not always. The sliders for envelopes is very flimsy and I doubt it would hold up in a real office situation where you needed to print envelopes often.
Now this barely three month old machine has starting leaving a trail of extra dots on the page, a symptom of needing a new drum. All attempts at cleaning have not helped. Far to little service from this far too expensive to run printer.

I wanted a replacement for my older Laser Printer. I have had this printer for several months and it works great. It was easy to hook up to my computer system. It is also smaller than my previous printer and runs much faster.
Bad Brother.......2007-09-13
This unit is practically new,purchased from Brothermall May 4,2007. Arrived making a very loud squeaking noise which ran us crazy.They were great and sent down a new drum and toner assembly.When the toner ran out this week I ordered another at $99 from Brothermall. When their new toner would not fit their new drum I called and was informed that I would have to buy a new drum at $188.99 since the one they sent in May was out of 90 day warranty !!! So...to get this almost new $160 printer running I need to spend $99 + $188.99 , a total of $448 in 6 months !!! Beware of this company.
