Sony SPP-A946 900 MHz Analog Cordless Phone with Answering Device (Gray)

Product Description

Sony offers an SPP - A946, a single-line cordless phone with digital answering machine. Analog 900MHz is used for extended range thanks to superior transmission technology and you can carry your cordless phone further-and still carry on a conversation. The base speakerphone feature lets you answer incoming calls at the base. The tapeless digital answering machine records up to 15 minutes of conversation, counting your messages and audibly indicating them. All messages are written in permanent flash memory so you will never suffer a loss of a single second of conversation. The LCD Display on base unit performs call screening. Intercom lets you talk between handset and base unit. Page signal initiates intercom contact in either direction.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony SPPA946 offers the combined conveniences of a 900 MHz cordless phone with a built-in digital answering system. The analog 900 MHz reception means that you can take the handset even farther away from that base than you normally would with an older phone operating on a lower band, and you will still get clear, reliable reception. The speakerphone capability means that you can converse without the handset, by speaking directly into the base. Use the two-way paging/intercom feature to send an audible signal from the base to the handset and vice versa, so you can summon a coworker or family member, locate the handset, or converse between handset and base. The SPPA946 also offers 20 preset speed-dials for easy two-button dialing. The built-in digital answering system manages three mailboxes, enabling family members or coworkers to access their own voice messages separately. The answering system also offers time/date stamping, memo recording, and remote message retrieval.

1 out of 5 stars SONY SPPA946 IS A TERRIBLE PHONE.......2002-10-31

I have had three of these phones brought to me for repair because the charging circuit goes bad and drains the battery.

4 out of 5 stars Decent buy for the price.......2002-05-18

Much cheaper than other Sony machine. Works fine -- then again, I wasn't looking for anything fancy. Don't have problems with the speakerphone or message recording as the others did. I like the dual keypads.

4 out of 5 stars Best Phone For Price.......2002-02-25

There is no other Phone with all these great features
for this Price. I paid only $... with a $5.00 Amazon Coupon!
I have seen this phone advertised for $70.00
at the WIZ the same day I purchased it from AMAZON.

The Sound Quality of the phone is loud and clear.
However, since this phone has 3 Mailboxes it's a little difficult learning how to retrieve your mesages from another phone. Other than that this phone is a great deal!

1 out of 5 stars simply horrible.......2002-01-04

everything about the phone is bad. the answering system, the voiceon the answering system, the ability to fast forward through messages...go waste your money on something better than this!

1 out of 5 stars Poor quality phone, poor quality answering.......2001-11-29

Features on this phone are great - that is until you try to use the (easy to implement) features. For the phone - unless you talk directly into the microphone, you won't be heard on the other end. Does not seem to be capable of picking up voice unless directly aimed at the mike. As for the answering machine - it works pretty well but if you want to record an outgoing message you might as well be talking into a tuna can. The voice quality is awful - reminds me of some of the first answering machines ten or fifteen years ago. My recommendation is that you pass on this turkey unless you want to send it back for exchange.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Visioneer, you just keep getting worse.......2007-11-18

I bought this scanner awhile back thinking it would save a bunch of time to be able to scan both sides of a page in one feed. Silly me. This is the worst PaperPort I ever owned. I have owned four over the years and kept hoping they would get even better. I eventually returned this POS.

I wish I had the first PaperPort I ever bought, which was terrific, but of course was not updated to work with XP. Visioneer, if you're going to force us to upgrade at least make the new scanner as good as the last. I've had the 100, 200 and 300 and all of them are problem-plagued. The 200 and 300 cut off the top 1/4 inch of your doc no matter what you do. Their auto-crop feature works about one in four scans with the result being that it cuts the right or left third of the page off. I just spent most of the day scanning with the strobe 200 and nearly lost my mind. I had to unplug and replug to get the scanner to be recognized. I had to reboot. Refeed. Straighten. Rescan. You get the picture. I am one PO'd owner.

On the plus side, I have always found the folks at Visioneer tech support to be some of the most honest and patient I have ever encountered. I feel sorry for them. I'll bet they want to ring their friggin's engineers' necks fifty times a day!

Will someone come out with portable sheetfed scanner that really works and actually saves time instead of creating massive headaches? I'll pay $300 for such a scanner, but it BETTER WORK!

Also Visioneer engineers and coders, how about releasing a finished driver for the Strobe 200? Vista's only been out ten months now. What the heck!

1 out of 5 stars Is the manual wrong?.......2007-03-15

I'm really confused by the reviews here. I was thinking about buying this scanner a little while ago and was put off by all the negative reviews. However, today I found the manual at the Visioneer site and some of the complaints are addressed in the manual. Specifcally on page 119, it shows that the autoscan can be disabled, and if it is enabled the paper pickup delay can be adjusted. Are reviewers here saying that these features don't work, or are they simply unaware of the ability to choose these settings? Wish I knew!

Update: So I just got off the phone with tech support - because I can't stand unanswered questions - and the gentleman I spoke with was truly one of the most pleasant and helpful techies I've ever called. No joke. Definitely not the rude, indifferent people described in the other reviews! He informed me that you CAN in fact set the autostart delay if you want to. He said it was an issue when it was first released, but that it HAS been fixed. He also said that since the XP 300 is designed to be able to handle thicker items like driver's licenses, etc., that it does handle thinner items like receipts a little differently than the old scanners which were not designed to do this.

I loved my old strobe scanner, but as good as it was, even it could be finicky at times. It was a small price to pay for the convenience, though. Another thing to consider for those of you who have experienced connection issues or other weird behavior - CHECK THE CABLE. So often we blame the equipment and we forget the usb cables and the power cords we connect them with. They DO go bad! Back in the early 90's, our first computer was having numerous weird problems and I kept telling my husband to try a new power cord. He didn't listen, and kept trying more "likely" solutions. I finally convinced him we had nothing to lose by trying. New power cord, ALL the problems went away. I've run into this with power supplies, too. They weren't bad enough to quit, just bad enought to mess with things.

    1 out of 5 stars Worst function per $$ I can imagine.......2007-01-09

I am a long time Visioneer fan.

It started with my initial parallel-port attached STROBE, windows 98 (95?) and the SUPERB paperport desktop.

When the paperport (now Nuance) people offered a special on the Visioneer 300, I assumed (sigh) they had tested it and found it a good match.

    NO!

    1. The lack of insert delay is HORRIBLE as you can't get the stuff aligned before it grabs it.

    2. the feed rollers are feeble. Any excuse to "skid" (not continue to scan in the paper) is a problem. When the paper leading edge hits the teeny resistance of the curve of the exit, (when trying to feed it back to you like my old paperport did - this one is totally unacceptable in only sending it out the back another inch higher), -or- when there is any input resistance - a slight down-fold in the paper (like every tri-fold sheet comes in the mail) then it again skids.

2a. I can even PUSH THE PAPER THROUGH THE FEED ROLLS, because they are so unbelievably feeble.

    3. My $59 or so Canoscan LiDE 35 has a wonderful "text enhanced" mode, while the $300 or so XP300 doesn't.

I don't believe I have ever spent so much money for something as completely unusable for its designated purpose.

I am tempted to take it apart, and wrap some surgical rubber around its toy feeder wheels, so it will at least grab the paper. If I break it in the process then I will no longer have to be unhappy with it.

SHAME SHAME, Visioneer!!! This should never have made it out of development engineering prototype phase!

OH AND FINALLY, silly me, I thought since PaperPort is SO nice, they would, with the xp 300, become a "feed paper onto your virtual desktop", but alas, no, you have to push so many buttons, have to destack everything (since single scans are SO unproductive due to all the button pushing)... I've written some MacroExpress macros so alt-S scans and alt-D is done, but still...

So shame on paperport/nuance for not really trying it, and most of all shame on me for buying it without looking for reviews such as this one!

P.S. "Yay Amazon". Much of my Christmas shopping, etc. Great!

1 out of 5 stars Worst scanner ever.......2006-09-29

The other reviewers basically summarize it all. I am going to return it. After complaining to the company about some problems their reply was: "You are right, these are known problems, no solution yet". Every new model gets worse. They have a great idea for a product but simply don't get it. Total idiots.

1 out of 5 stars Design flaw acknowledged but no remedy offered !!!.......2006-04-05

DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER. I have owned six Strobe scanners over the years with satisfactory performance until now.

This scanner has THREE problems that are all acknowledged by Technical Support, however Customer Service will not offer any remedy whatsoever. First, the Strobe scanners are designed to start scanning when paper is inserted. The Strobe XP300 is the FIRST Strobe scanner that does NOT allow the user to set a 'scan start delay time'. This was typically 0.8 seconds and allowed the user to insert the paper straight before the scan starts. The XP300, however, starts scanning immediately - before the paper begins to feed - and results in 1/2" to 1" of horizontal lines at the top of EVERY PAGE. Technical Support says Visioneer knows this is a problem, has been unable to come up with a fix, PLUS they tell me the ONLY remedy is to manually initiate every scan.

Second, the XP300 will not feed thin documents, such as receipts. Therefore, they include with the scanner two sizes of clear plastic document sleeves in which you are to place the thin sheets. Unfortunately, this does not work which is the THIRD problem - the scanner jams with the thickness of the document holders.

Feel free to call Technical Support (it's a toll call, by the way); they will acknowledge that the XP300 is their worst product and no one is satisfied. One has to wonder why it is still advertised as an AutoScan model when there is no way to obtain a quality scan.
