Yes, a must have for lap swimmers!.......2007-12-26
My 2 1/2 hr swim felt like like it passed in 30 min. My body gave out before I ran out of music. I loaded 42 songs the first time out and did not get through them all.
Pros: Easy to load music, plug into USB and drag songs. Volume control and song skip easy to use during swim. Clips perfectly onto goggles. Does not disturb anyone around you. Works perfectly for all swim strokes, best when submerged. Just get earplugs if it's too loud with your head out of the water.
Cons: I did notice the o-ring around the USB port did allow some water in, but this did not affect its ability to connect or transfer songs or charge once it was dry. A 1 Gig might be better unless you don't mind changing your songs if you get tired of them.

Swim MP3 Player.......2007-09-06
This is an excellent idea and a great product for swimmers. It is especially useful for distance or duration swimming. I use the player in conjunction with an Endless Pool which has a 30 minute timer on the current propulsion unit. I load the player with about 30 minutes of music and the time goes quickly. The sound quality is good while in the water. I swim with a snorkel so the sound transmission is very constant. My only compliant is the lack of a memory start/stop feature. The player takes the music in the order placed on the drive and starts from the beginning each time. I have placed audio books on this device. They work fine as long as you can break them into appropriate time blocks or chapters. Highly recommended.
finis swimp3 player.......2007-05-19
I purchased the swimp3 with a lot of research about what was available on the market (not much) after being sidelined from running due to plantar fasciitis. swimming laps indoors is not my favorite activity. before buying the swimp3, i had to force and bribe myself to go to the Y to swim the 35 laps that constitute ONLY ONE HALF MILE- talk about tedium. Nothing is perfect but this device makes those laps, that time go so much faster that i almost look forward to 35 laps. would i rather be runnning? yes. however, if i can't, this is very easy to use and breaks the monotony of lap after lap. it is easy to load music or books from your computer with their software or yours, the battery is easy to charge and recharge and it holds at least three hours of non stop music. i cant imagine anyone swimming non stop voluntarily longer than that. the controls on the back of the head are a little bit close together for clumsy fingers and the goggles must be made for big men with large bridge noses but you can swap out the goggles and learn the finger controls. i love this piece of equipment and have told many of my friends about it. nobody had heard of it before i told them. AMAZING. best kept secret in swim training devices. i suggest this product for anyone who swims distance (or not) competitively or has had to switch to swimming due to injury. music always makes the quality of life better. the "ear pieces" on this are amazing.
A swimmer's opinion of the SwimP3.......2007-01-11
I admit I was skeptical of the SwimP3 when I first heard about it. I didn't believe that a device could produce sound that I could hear through the water. Since I'm known among my friends as a swimmer, I inevitably got one as a gift last Christmas.
I have been loving the device since then! I had a rocky beginning with it because I wasn't using the (provided) earplugs. The real problem is not the volume of the device but how LOUD the pool water is rushing over your ears. You don't really notice just how loud it is until there's something to compete with it. The device comes with some ear plugs, and these are essential for good sound quality. Without earplugs you can still discern the sound, but not nearly at as high a quality as you can with.
The device works like it says -- the sound comes in directly through your skull; you can actually hear the music better underwater! The device is very small and can be worn on the back straps of any pair of goggles (it comes pre-attached to a pair). It fits behind the head at such an angle that does not cause any noticable drag in any stroke.
The goggles need to be worn rather tight for the device to be heard properly, but it's still more comfortable than those horrible Swedish goggles. The device comes with a pair of goggles that are pretty high quality. They are not as good as most other name-brand goggles, but they have lasted me through about 8 months of swimming so far. It would be easy for me to attach the device to a different pair.
For some technical aspects...
The device has a single port on it, which is sealable with a bendy rubber flap. The port resembles the kind on your computer you plug your mouse into (PS2), and appears to be well-sealed with some sort of clear epoxy. On top of that, the rubber flap snaps into place as an extra layer of water-tight protection. That single port comes with a cable that terminates on the other end as a USB plug. When this is plugged into the computer, it both allows you to transfer songs (it shows up as a portable hard-drive) and recharges the SwimP3.
The device is capable of holding 128 MB of MP3 files, which is a bit limiting, but is honestly plenty for a workout. You'd probably be fine encoding your music at 128 Kbps or even 96 -- this isn't exactly a high-fidelity device (you're not going to hear it underwater). The battery lasts a little more than two hours. I do not know if it supports VBR MP3 files.
The controls on the device are on/off, volume up/down, and track next/previous. There is no display on the device (you're supposed to wear it on the back of your head).
The workouts...
This device makes it much easier to swim long distances alone. Normally I find it hard to swim 4000 yards by myself in a pool, but workouts seem to go much faster listening to music. I had concerns that the device might be disruptive during group swim classes, but the device appears to be completely quiet to nearby listeners. I think it would be safe to use it on a swim team or during any other sort of group activity.
About me...
My background as a swimmer started with high school varsity as a short-distance freestyle sprinter. From there I spanned out into club and college intramural. I swim about 4 times per week, and this device makes the times I swim alone MUCH easier.
All in all, I would give this device 4 out of 5 stars -- extremely good for a first-generation device aimed at a tiny market. I am sure future generations will come with more space and better features (OGG support!). As it is, I would definitely recommend this to any technically-savy person who swims regularly. A very good buy!

Makes the boredom go away.......2007-01-20
This is a fantastic product. I use it everytime I swim. The only issue I have is when I flip turn the pads move over my ears, and the sound can get LOUD. But, I am just nit picking. The sound quality is great esp. in the water, where it is meant to be used.
Anything easy listening will be hard to hear around the splashing of the water, but I listen to alot of rock and metal which comes through just fine.
This product is made for lap swimmers, it successfully removes the inevitable boredom that comes with swimming endless laps.

I like swimming with this mp3 player but I am a little concerned about what will happen when the strap breaks. I have had several goggles where the strap broke. I hope the strap on this mp3 does not wear out. I also wish the software would let me organize a play list. It shows up as a hard drive on my desktop and I have no idea what order the songs will play in. I am on a Macintosh.
One more thing but I don't know how to solve this problem. The sound of the water splashing while you swim can get in the way of your music. After a few laps I notice that I block out the water sound. It also takes me a few laps to adjust the goggles to keep the water out of my eyes.
Swim and sing!.......2006-01-31
This product is awesome! I swim a mile 3x's a week and was getting a little bored but loved the exercise. This solved that problem completely. The sound is great and I haven't had a single problem yet. I have recharged the battery after about 5 workouts but was not having any issues with the battery at that point. I have 30 songs loaded but it has more space so I think you could get more like 35 songs on it. It has shuffle and all the features you need. I highly recommend it!
