Capable of receiving seven National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association (NOAA) channels--each of which receives emergency advisories on tornadoes, floods, severe thunderstorms, civil danger warnings, and more--the 74-250C is a must for people who live in high-risk weather areas, or for people who just want a little extra protection when hitting the outdoors. Plus, the seven NOAA channels offer coverage for roughly 93 percent of the U.S., so most residents are well covered regardless of where they live.
Another valuable function is the radio's Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) reception. SAME allows users to program the radio to sound an alert only when weather and other emergencies threaten a specific county or counties. The technology eliminates all alerts from other areas, so users won't perk up their ears each time the alert sounds only to learn that the emergency is actually 100 miles up the highway. The 74-250C's memory system accepts up to nine counties, so you can monitor a broad swatch of counties at once or restrict it to one.
Should an alert occur, users have a choice of three warning systems: a 90 dB siren, a voice alert, or a flashing red LED light. The siren is the best option for people who might not have their radios nearby at all times, while the latter two alerts are a bit less extreme on the ears. The digital panel, meanwhile, displays up to 56 messages, so you'll instantly know what's coming your way. Additional features include a built-in thermometer with a freeze alert that notifies you when the temperature drops below freezing, a full-function clock with an alarm and snooze button, an external earphone jack, and a water-resistant housing.
The radio, which works with two AA batteries (not included), measures 2.38 by 4 by 1.25 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty.

I bought the Midland to replace an Oregon Scientific that would not trigger on SAME alerts. As a member of SkyWarn, I need to get alerts when they happen.
I like the radio. It has a good feel and the weight is right. The nain push switch (on / off / speaker on/off / monitor) takes some getting used to. I keep it next to the bed at night and changing modes requires both hands. The set up was easy and the directions were easy to follow. I am thinking about getting the base unit for my Ham radio room.

Functions perfectly but operating system is very unintuitive, must consult owner's manual often, and even that is poorly written. Battery life not great, should look for AC adapter soon.
Portable weather alert radio.......2007-09-27
Product shipped fast, was fairly easy to set up, while we haven't had any alerts yet since I received it, I'm confident it will work as advertised. I keep it in the car on a charger w/ NIMH batteries; when we're on the road, I will add more counties and states, and change them when we return home.
Easier than I thought to program.......2007-07-06
I almost decided against purchasing this radio after reading the reviews concerning the difficulties people had programming this unit. However, I found a good deal so decided to give it a whirl. Well, I had very little trouble programming it and didn't find the directions all that unclear. I don't know if my lack of sleep was a plus or a minus but do know I had it programed pretty quickly.
Unfortunately I had another problem with it...there must be a loose connection in the headphone jack because you cannot hear anything over the speaker unless you manage to find and press the "sweet spot" which is somewhere on the rubber pad that covers the headphone and rechargeable battery connection. So, it'll have to go back but I am going to ask for a replacement as it works fine otherwise. I would not use the SAME technology for a long time as it eats up batteries...
Is what's expected.......2007-05-25
It's a nice radio, but the instructions are awful. It's hard to figure out what you're supposed to do with it. Pushing mode takes you through the listening/display options.. but what then? Does it alert you to incoming storms in ANY mode.
Batteries seem to wear out fast.. it doesn't come with a cord even if you did have rechargeables.
Midland, are you listening, give us a charge chord!
