This was bought for me as a gift (not from amazon, though, but Apple). However, advertising both here and on Apple's website claim that this product is compatible with the 3rd generation iPod (not talking about the iPod nano, but the 10/15/20GB one that came out in 2003).
It isn't. Calls to iHome's customer service department only confirmed this. In fact, I was told that the only iHome product that is compatible with the 3rd gen iPod is the iH5 alarm clock radio.
Otherwise, it's a fine system and I thought the sound was pretty good.
Almost but not quite.......2007-08-18
good controls, dual alarm feature is nice, excellent reception even though I live in a rural area. I purchaased the three speaker model as reports indicated this would improve sound quality. The third speaker merely cancels one of the two internal speakers and allows you to get more phsyical separation between the left and right channels. The sound quality of the speakers is unacceptable, tinny, poor range, sounds like a cheap tabletop radio. The good news is you can connect external speakers, I purchased a set of Kipsch 2.1 and the sound and feautres are now excellend. Of course that adds another 150.00 to get an adequate device. If the speakers were improved, it would definitelg earn five stars.

This is the best thing ever. looks cool, awesome sound, handy remote, and just plain awesome. Personally, i dont think the display is too bright. theres a button that controls the display light ranging anywhere from lighting up a country, or no light at all, and everything in between. Basically, its amazing!
ALL-PURPOSE iPOD PLAYBACK UNIT.......2007-05-13
We already had been using the iH5 which was the first iHome iPod/AM-FM/alarm clock unit. Gave that to our son for use at school and upgraded to the iH7B.
(Why is the iH7 only available in black as opposed to the other iHs which come in B or W?) This unit has presets for the radio and a dual alarm clock. MOST IMPORTANT, the separate speaker allows one to truly sense stereo which is not the case with the iH5 or iH6 - well woth the extra $$. Separate AM antenna makes for good reception. FM antenna is a long wire which requires careful placement to keep if away from interference from adjacent AC power line. As will all iHomes, it has built in iPod charger with inserts to accomodate various iPod models. Also has a second charging 'slot' - but this only works with the Shuffle - ideally this would be a full-service charger. Also has a line-input to allow one to connect a CD player (remember those?) or a non-iPod MP3 player.
The display ruins it........2007-01-22
Not that the display has anything to do with the sound (which is good)...it's that even at the lowest level of brightness, it is still WAY too bright. The whole background panel is lighted. It can literally light the whole room, which is a problem if you want this near your bed.

Got it used... worked fine.......2007-04-08
I bought this radio for a cheap price. It was advertised as new, but it was used. However, the problem with the seller has been solved, so, let's review the radio.
1- The best feature: I can connect my USB flash drive or SD/MMC card directly to the face plate and start listening to my MP3 music in a matter of seconds. I've tested it with 1GB drives formatted as FAT16 and FAT32 and works fine. The SD/MMC reader tends to start to skip the music after a few minutes of playback, but I blame it my unit being used.
2- Connectivity: 4 speakers, line out for an amplifier, and a power line for the amplifier or the power antenna. Totally standard.
Tried using SD/MMC cards, USB flash drives, a portable Kingston Travellite USB card reader successfully. However, when connected to my girlfriend's Creative Zen nano, it will not recognize it, both powered on and off.
3- Performance: nice audio output. It's connected to some cheap speakers and the radio can take the best out of them. Anti skip is fine. I've had no skips while driving in bad roads. The AM/FM receivers works fine even in tunnels, provided you have a fully extended antenna. In my work, I have to turn off and restart my car many times per hour, and have found the following:
-It takes from 5 to 9 seconds to start after the radio is powered by the ignition switch.
-In USB/SD modes, it will restart the song it was playing from the beginning, not the spot it left. Good sometimes, bad sometimes.
One thing that bothers me is the fact that you can not set it to display the time by default, so you have to reach the radio every time you want to know what time it is. This would not be a problem if your car has an in-dash clock, but mine has not.
4- The looks: if you like bright radios, this is for you. Since this radio has a flip-down face plate, it leaves space for a huge blue LCD screen surrounded by lots of red lights that looks really nice in the night. However, during the day the shiny faceplate is hard to read. However, don't expect the huge LCD screen to offer a lot of information. It only displays one line of text at a time, showing the file name, followed by the song name, folder name and artist.
4- Controls: The main control is a huge dial to the left. It can be rotated, click-pushed and hold-pushed in order to set it up. Easy to understand, but sometimes this button gets stuck when "clicked".
The unit has multiple SMALL buttons on top and below the screen, that get confusing at times, but you get used to them. Also, it comes with a credit card remote controller that can control almost every aspect of the radio. I find it easier to reach the RC that the radio itself while driving.
OVERALL: 4/5 stars. I like this radio and it will stay where it is until a new one catches my eye. I recommend it as a good gadget for a person that uses USB drives and SD cards. If you are not that kind of person, this radio has nothing new to offer.
