Bose Sound Dock will Blow you Away!.......2007-11-12
Bought it at Target after listening to a demo on the in store display. Those things never sound like the demo right? Oh well, I can always return it. Got it home and I was right. It didn't sound like the display model at all...it sounded SO MUCH BETTER!! I have a small house with hard wood floors throughout and this thing sounds incredible. If you close your eyes you would swear you were in front of HUGE concert quality speakers. I mean it...I plugged it in, set my iPod on it and turned it on. That was it. Soon Norah Jones, Diana Krall and John Mayer were in the same room with me and my wife giving us a private show. WOW! Well worth the $299. Did I say that?? Its true. I will never use any other sound system. This is it for us. My Big Sony stereo with 4 speakers and 5CD changer is history. The Bose sound is so rich, clear and detailed with plenty of clean bass. I am really happy with the sound. Amazed at it. You can turn the EQ on your iPod off or set it to flat. You don't need any enhancements. It worked great out of the box with my wife's 4th gen mini and with my 5th gen Video.
Only one thing we don't like is that it comes with a long electric cord that has a big DC converter (like you would find on a laptop computer cord), so its hard to hide all cord. If you want cordless, you have to spring another $100 for the portable model which also has an aux jack. This one does not have the jack. Personally - I would get the portable. It would be great to move it around the house or be able to use it for something other than an iPod. But this was for my wife and she was cool with it. She plans to leave it on the kitchen counter and just turn it up (there is plenty of power) when she leaves the room which is fine in our small house. She only uses an iPod so has no need for the jack. Translation: She wouldn't let me spend $400!
(We were finally able to hide all the cords behind the unit by putting it in a corner)
If you have a large house, or are bothered by cord clutter go for the portable. They should both sound the same. Either way, I highly recommend the Bose Sound Dock.

I love this product. I bought it for a sunroom in process and have "stored" it in my kitchen. Now I want one for both rooms. If you want good sound, music of your choice, no commercials, and all in a small space it is for you.

It sounds very good, but....
For a few pennies more, they could have added a clock/alarm or input/output jacks. Amazon has a dirt cheap generic player similar to this and even that one has a input jack (and a video out RCA plug, and it even has a USB outlet). Furthermore, the front mount is flimsy, and because the power cord plug points to the back as opposed to the side, it needs an additional 1" of clearance on a bookshelf.
With a standard input jack, it actually would have been a nice space saver because I could have hooked my computer up to it and tossed out my computer speakers. Also, it would have been good for other MP3 players, or even to use instead of the standard TV speaker(s). Additionally, it would be useful for years to come.

Two years old and still pumping top quality sound, artfully designed and hard to tell it is a stereo speaker.
Quality like this will make you want to buy more Bose, it is truly a showcase of quality Bose audio in package that borders on tiny.
The volume control on the iPod doesn't increase or decrease volume when on the Sound Dock, it seems like any audio accessory that connects through the data conduit isn't controlled by iPod volume unless it connects through the headphone jack.
The remote control uses a coin cell battery, slightly more expensive than a traditional AAA or AA battery but it will last longer, you aren't likely to find a replacement battery at a convenience store, more like Radio Shack or the electronics section of Target / WalMart.
Just like the other reviewers have affirmed, the performance can blow you out of your chair just like the metrosexual in those Memorex commercials. This thing is barely wider than a copy of Time Magazine rested on it's binding and shorter, amazing such a small device can power so much sound, but not surprising to anyone old enough to remember the original bookshelf Gallien Krueger amps.
The only gripe is also one of its better attributes, the remote is so slim and efficiently sized, it gets lost easily. Bose can sell you a replacement ($9.99 at this time) in black or white and either works, but they take a month to ship.
Note, there is a web rumor that the soundock and other powerful speakers can damage the hard disk drives in iPods because of the magnetic field or the immense sound vibration can chink the drive heads. This is unfounded, the soundock speakers are shielded, and the iPod hard drive is shielded, the amount of magnetic force required to magnetically wipe an iPod are so great it is rarely found in normal society. Regarding sound wave vibrations, again the iPod is provided with a modicum of shock protection and the level of sound it would take to chink the head would be too loud from an apparatus of this size, Bose, G&K or otherwise.
