Sony DSCU30 Cybershot 2 MP Digital Camera (Silver)

      Product Description

The DSC-U30 is one of the most compact digital still cameras available in its class and the successor to the popular DSC-U20, a model which introduced the concept of the digital still camera as a pocket accessory. The DSC-U30 is ultra-compact and ultra-stylish. A reflective disc on the sliding lens cover is cleverly designed to act as a mirror, helping you to easily frame self-portraits. New features make it easy to take great shots in challenging conditions. For example in Playback Mode, Enlarged Playback allows you to check the focus of a shot immediately after it has been taken by enlarging the center of the image to either 2.5 or 5 times its actual size, a feature which is particularly useful in low light conditions. New scene settings, Twilight and Active Outdoor, add to the existing Soft Snap, Illumination Snap and Vivid Nature. Sony has applied ingenious technology to create a new Hybrid LCD screen that performs as well in bright, outdoor conditions as in indoor or lower light environments. The one-inch, 64, 000 pixel screen has a smart way of using both transmitted and reflected light to maintain clarity, thus eliminating the need to switch between viewing modes. The camera provides impressive storage capabilities and image transfer is easy, making them an ideal accessory for the connected lifestyle. It is Memory Stick PRO compatible, giving up to 1GB storage and cable-free transfer to other Memory Stick PRO compatible devices. It is also USB-equipped and is supplied with software that provides direct image transfer to a PC; this can be done even when the camera batteries are empty as the USB cable provides power for the transfer. Image transfer software, which is supplied and easily installed in a PC, automatically downloads the images and sorts them by date to user specified folders.

      Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Cybershot DSC-U30 digital camera is small and light enough to slip in your pocket for snapping photos wherever you roam. It features a 2-megapixel resolution, fast start-up to capture shots almost instantaneously, and a movie mode. It comes in two other colors: blue and dark gray.

      Optics and Resolution
The Cybershot U30 features a 2-megapixel Super HAD (hole accumulation diod) CCD that captures excellent image quality by allowing more light to pass through to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing image noise. It has two resolution modes: high (1632 x 1224) for prints up to 8 x 10 inches, and low (640 x 480) for e-mailing to friends and family. A fixed-focus camera, the Cybershot U30 has no optical or digital zoom.

      Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the Cybershot U30 can also record up to 15 seconds of 160 x 112 MPEG video (without audio). The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true camcorder.

      More Features
The Cybershot U30 has a fast start-up time of 0.9 seconds, enabling you to capture those important shots that other cameras might miss. The camera includes 5 scene modes (soft snap, illumination snap, twilight, active outdoor, and vivid nature) and pre-flash metering, which illuminates the subject and calculates exposure through the lens directly from the CCD for accurate calculation for a flash-lit shot.

      Other features include:

      Storage and Transfer
Images can be stored on the included 8 MB Memory Stick, which can store approximately 15 images at 1632 x 1224 pixels. The Cyber-shot DSC-P92 is also compatible with optional Memory Stick PRO media, which can extend data capacity up to 1 GB.

Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via ultrafast USB 2.0, which means it can be connected to any USB-compatible Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software. When used with USB 1.1 connection, transfer will slow to USB 1.1 rate.

      Power and Size
The camera is powered by 2 AAA batteries (rechargeable NiMH batteries included). It measures 3.3 by 1.6 by 1.1 inches and weighs 4.3 ounces (including batteries).

      What's In The Box
This package includes the Cybershot DSC-U30 digital camera, 8 MB Memory Stick, neck strap, 2 AAA rechargeable NiMH batteries, battery charger (BC-CS2), and USB cable. The included CD-ROM features Pixela Image Mixer for Sony v1.5 and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny and fast.......2006-12-23

This camera and my U20 is a technological wonder. It is as small as a large pack of stick gum as everyone has stated, but it is also light and pretty tough as it has a completely aluminum shell. I dropped it a few times on industrial carpet (no padding) and its still kicking. All shots I took were razor sharp and the things that I really liked about this little camera were its speed to start up and the shutter lag. It takes about a second to boot up, great for impulse shots. Something happens and you are on it, a one handed operation to pull it out of your coat pocket, slide open the lens cover/power switch and hit the shutter release. It is small enough to just hold out and shoot, the LCD is TINY and is more of a review tool than a frame tool although it works fine for that too if your eyes are good enough. The shutter lag as about 1/2 second counting flash, a little less outside, not really good but deffinately better than some cameras. There are some functions that are useless, like the index function that shows 1/4 inch thumbnails of pictures on the memory stick, that is a small picture, large enough just to make out what the pic might be of. I wear glasses so this may be a little biased. It has a few modes, like sepia, black and white, scenic and close up, dont really see a diference in the scenic and close up, maybe an F-stop difference. All in all, I was REALLY impressed with my 20 dollar Ebay purchase, although they have really gone up in price on the popular auction site. I would imagine the CCD recall from Sony has really made these popular again as it is a VERY popular free service. I had my camera for little over a month when it started to show the signs of the CCD defect, Purple and green images, and the entire LCD image seems to melt befor your eyes like a watercolor picture put under a faucet. Very "trippy" looking image. I power cycled it a few times and it cleared up but it always came back, probably why it was 20 bucks! I stashed it broken for almost 1 year until I heard of the recall and promptly dug it out and sent it away to Sony after filling out the online repair request, they even sent me a pre paid UPS label, very accomidating of SONY as it was a real PR nightmare when over 100 models of cameras from 6 different manufacturers started to hear of the bad SONY made CCD going out. Excellent little impulse camera when it works, probably not the best for a scenic trip, but great at parties and glove box shooting. Zinc batteries last about 4 shots, NiCD are better, NiMH are great and the new Energizer lithium batteries will work for a few days of shooting!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent little camera!.......2005-08-24

I love cameras and this camera is a Keeper! It fits nicely in the handbag/pocket and takes great pictures! When I want to take a camera with me while power-walking (maybe catch a deer or ducks in my view...) this camera fits perfect in my pocket and doesn't interfere with my "steps" :)

      4 out of 5 stars Lacks Zoom.......2005-08-21

Picture quality is great and it's so easy to throw in your pocket or purse... a nice camera to have as a second camera.

5 out of 5 stars Great little camera!.......2005-06-26

I bought 5 of these when Ritz Camera were closing them out at $100 each. Love it as a second camera, easy to use and great as a second small digital camera if not also as a primary one. The other 4 were given as gifts and all those who received it love it too. Easy to pack for everyday carrying! Included NIMH batteries and charger made it even a better deal!

Afternote: I gave this to my son for his E-Bay use and got a Canon SD 400 which I love.

2 out of 5 stars Redeye is AWFUL.......2005-03-08

I hate this camera for two reasons!

      1. Most every image you take of someone's pretty eyes will have some form of redeye, usually pretty bad. Don't think it won't be bad for you, I did and got burned!. The red-eye reduction doesn't help either.

      2. Focusing/taking the picture doesn't work well. How annoying is this, you focus on the picture (half-press shutter button), camera beeps, saying it is in focus. You proceed to fully press the button and ... nothing! You hold it there for a few seconds and EVENTUALLY it will take the picture. I find this occurs when you take pictures that are not focused on any one particular subject (landscape, parties, etc.)

Other bad things which aren't necessarily the cameras fault.
-It's tiny, very tiny. Sometimes your thumb will get in the way of the lens, messing up the shot.
-No zoom, This gets annoying if you are used to a camera with a zoom, but if you don't mind "manually zooming", then go for it.

      Meade 670 Dew Shield

      Product Description

Threaded into the objective lens cell of either the ETX 60AT or ETX 70AT, the #670 Dew Shield inhibits the deposition of dew on the lens surface in climates prone to high nighttime moisture in the air.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Essential accessory for your ETX.......2002-07-21

During winter dew is a major issue with my astronomical viewing. On those clear nights when I am out with the ETX, very often I have dew forming relatively quickly. I am typically out for two to four hours weather permitting, and invariably everything is getting soaked. Scope, tables, atlas etc. I havn't as yet invested in a heated element (corrector warmer) and rely solely on my Meade Dew Shield. At some stage however, I will definitely be purchasing one to compliment the dew shield. After about three to four hours, even with the shield on I begin to notice some buildup of dew on the optics. The different Meade dew shield model numbers for the various ETX scopes are as follows: ETX-60AT and ETX-70AT (#670), ETX-90 (#673), ETX-105EC (#675), and ETX-125EC (#678). Overall, I am generally pleased with the shield. It is made of solid plastic and screws on securely to the ETX tube, where the lens cap normally screws on. Obviously this means you have to remove it each time you want to put the dust cap back on. I have read of one owner who keeps his dew shield on permanently and has made a foam lens/dust cap for the end of the dew shield. Take care when unscrewing your dew shield from the tube as it does sometimes suffer the same problem as the lens cap. That is, it can stick and not unscrew easily. Don't panic. Just grip the tube firmly and unscrew the shield/lens cap without unscrewing the front of the tube assembly. When screwing the shield on, do it gently and never force it, so not as to strip the thread. The shield has a flat black finish which looks nice, and absorbs stray reflections. I store mine by slipping it reversed over the tube and it fits nicely in the Meade ETX Hardcase. And now for the important part, use your dew shield all the time, summer and winter. It performs one other extremely important function. It assists greatly in protecting your optics from pollen. Pollen is the number one problem that can affect your beautiful ETX, and ruin the one part of your scope that really can't be replaced easily. Trust me on this one, I have damaged optics on my first ETX as a result of my ignorance about pollen. Since using the dew shield I have noticed much less of a pollen problem on my optics. So not only does the shield protect against dew, it protects against all the other contaminents that can be carried in the air. Why have I only given the shield 3 stars? The shield is simply overpriced, otherwise it would have rated a 5. Unfortunately though folks, if you want to protect those optics and maximise your viewing, you really need one. Clear skies everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Should come with the telescope.......2001-12-18

Unless you live in the desert or something, a dew shield seems necessary for any telescope. (Most telescopes come with them.) This one works just fine with the ETX-70. It stores nicely in the Hard Carry Case. It's made of lightweight plastic (as is most of the ETX-70) so you can be pretty sure it won't hurt your motor and gears. It doesn't seem to make the tripod any shakier than it already is. I just wish it came with the scope.
