I bought this unit for DVD storage. There is plenty of room for us and fits well in our family room. It is what you would expect of a unit you have to assemble yourself. My daughter and I put it together so it's not that difficult.

I returned the item because it fell apart as I was attempting to put it together - cheap, compressed wood by-products and card board. Even though I did receive a full refund after it was returned, I would not recommend it to anyone else. I was able to find a solid wood and better made shelf from another vendor.
Lacks structural integrity........2007-01-24
I ordered this unit to store my DVD collection, which is currently just under 300 titles. It has definitely helped to keep my media organized.
I like that the height of the shelves can be adjusted to fit CDs, DVDs, or even clamshell VHS cases. If the shelves are set to the height of a standard DVD box, the unit will fit five rows of DVDs -- there will be a sixth row that is about the right height for standard CD jewel cases. At this height, you will have leftover shelving and hardware (the shelves are held in place with metal dowels) that I assume would come in handy if the unit were used for CDs, as you could then accomodate more rows of shelves.
The unit isn't difficult to put together. My only issue with the piece is its cumbersome distribution of weight. It's quite top-heavy. I actually had to screw picture framing hardware to both my wall and the back of the unit and tether the unit to the wall with wire to get it to stand upright. Before I did so, it would not stand straight on my carpeted floor with anything on the shelves. For the price, it works well and looks fine, but if you aren't prepared to do some engineering to hold the thing upright, it probably isn't the best product to buy.

My husband and I have about 1000 cds/dvds/videos and we had previously stored them in boxes, shelves, and wherever we found space. When I found this online, I thought it would be a great substitution. Well, it fits perfectly in our media room and now we have extra storage space. You will not disappointed with this purchase!

1st carbon fibre tripod a winner.......2007-09-13
I've used aluminum tripods for 30 years and this was my first carbon fiber. I choose the Velbon, for price, a long list of nice features equal to some Bogen ones, and a case to boot. It seemed like a great deal opposed to Bogen. I must say this is one good looking tripod. Well made and light, weight wise. That is why I purchased a new tripod to begin with, and the 640 didn't disappoint. The head could be a little nicer, that's why I held back the 5th star. But the legs on this beauty are fantastic. At 3.5lbs, less than 4.5lbs with head, and it's short size when closed are nothing less than amazing. The numbering on the leg sections is nice. 4 sections are very nice, always had 3's. The leg angle thing seems the weakest part,and the only complaint I could come up with is that the case doesn't hold the tripod and zip up. You have to unscrew one of the head handles and screw it on the bottom of the other handle, the end is threaded just for this purpose. otherwise this is one fine tripod. At the price, I would buy another. Amazon, your the Best!
Great tripod........2007-04-25
Quality product. Very light. Super strong - I have mounted my Nikon D200 with a Nikon 200-400M zoom (Nikon Zoom-Nikkor - Telephoto zoom lens - 200 mm - 400 mm - f/4.0 G ED-IF AF-S VR - Nikon F) lens on it and this tripod holds that combo just fine. Cheaper tripods won't handle the weight and the last thing you want is for the tripod to fail and many $$s of gear hits the ground.
Adjusting is easy and quick. Added bonus of measurement markings on each leg section which assists you in getting all 3 legs the same length. Easy to take it to a very low position as shown in the additional images.
The pan head works fine and is fairly smooth, but I am a ballhead person, so I replaced it with a Really Right Stuff ballhead.
One note, when you remove the pan head, which is not hard, depending on the head you are replacing the pan head with, you might have to "switch" the mounting screw. My replacement ballhead needed a 3/8 screw instead of the 1/4 inch screw, it took me a bit to figure it out, but all you need to do is "unscrew" the head mounting screw and flip it over and you have a 3/8 screw. Nice thinking by Velbon!
