Canon 5D SLR Camera Armor - Smoke
Customer Reviews:
Camera Armor for Canon 5D.......2007-12-15
I purchased this product to minimize wear and tear on my camera. The D5 and Armor arrived on the same day, so I put it on right out of the box. I haven't had any problems activating any of the keys. It was easy to place the camera into the Armor. The first thing I noticed is that it gives you a nice firm grip on the camera. The rubber is sturdy yet soft. Additionally, the Armor wraps around the bottom so anytime you place the camera down, the rubber is protecting it. I really liked this because I've placed my camera on rocks or rough surfaces only to hear it move and scrape on the plastic/metal base.
I couldn't find any serious disadvantages with this product. I initially thought the lens protector wasn't going to fit around the 16-35mm Canon zoom lens (82mm lens end). However, I had to seriously had to stretch it to get it on. After installing both pieces I realized the camera could now be placed down on any side and nothing was going to happen to it (within reason). I also had to move the plastic a little bit to get the lens to mate with the camera (almost not worth mentioning).
A note on how I grade. 5 stars means perfect/can't live without. 4 stars mean that I would highly recommend and buy it.
Small inconveniences included access to the battery. I had to move the rubber a little bit to access the battery door. With a little movement, the door opened and closed easily. The CF and Digital/Video Out doors function perfectly. The wording and symbols for the functions and buttons on the Armor are in black. A little tricky to see so I used a metallic paint marker to highlight them. Would have been nice if they were painted white. I may be noticing this because I'm still trying to learn where all the buttons are on the camera. Another thing I noticed is that the camera sticks to your clothes a lot more with the Armor, as opposed to having the camera plastic exposed. What I mean by this is that it won't slide across your clothes when you're in motion such as walking. It may take some getting used to.
For show-offs, the lens protector will cover the valued red ring at the end of the lens.
In response to a point brought up about moisture getting captured between the Armor and camera...the jury is still out. However, I can easily pull the rubber away from the front and rear of the camera to see if any dirt or moisture is trapped and clean if necessary.
fits like a glove.......2007-10-31
As a wildlife/landscape photographer I am always heading into some pretty rugged places. Camera Armor not only keeps my Canon 5D from the little dings I have on my other equipment but is excellent in providing sure handling of the camera in damp conditions. I am very pleased that all camera controls are easily usable with the armor on. I wish they would come out with armor for my 20D.
a near-necessity.......2007-10-12
After buying a Canon 5D, I discovered I was now the owner of an expensive camera I was afraid to take out of the house! Loss was not as much of a worry as was fear of damage. Fancy cameras are not cheaply repaired.
This piece of "camera armor" largely resolved the problem. It fits well (though a bit of fiddling is needed to align the switch covers with the switches). Your camera is now splash- and light-rain-proof, and the likelihood of damage if it's banged or dropped is reduced.
MADE camera armor provides cheap piece of mind, and as such is strongly recommended.
Addendum: I recently removed and replaced the Camera Armor, and in the process, managed to rip off the "tongue" that protects the flash shoe. Whether this is a design defect or sample defect, I can't say, and the Armor has a lifetime warranty, anyway, so I'm not out anything other than the cost of postage to return it. But I recommend a bit of caution when putting it on. Don't pull on this part of the Armor.
Further Addendum: The other day I had business in Seattle, so I stopped by Made and exchanged the torn 5D Armor for a new version (no charge). The head of the company told me that I was not the only person to have this problem.
The new one slipped on and aligned more easily, though I can't say why. (It might have been my imagination.) And I switched from black to smoke. The black Armor readily shows dirt, which lightens the black to a dirty gray, and makes the armor _look_ dirty. If your model comes in smoke, you'll probably be happier with that shade.
protecting your camera.......2007-06-15
Having a rubber case enveloping the camera, is the most sensible way of protecting an expensive piece of equipment. First, the rubber keeps it dry, Second, the body is protected from nicks and bangs and the extra weight and bulk, is so minimal that it is negligible. All the features can be accessed, perhaps with a little more effort, but it is worth it.
not too useful.......2007-06-02
MADE CA-1113-BLK SLR Camera Armor for Canon 5D Digital SLR (Black)
It may be a reasonable protection from direct hit or drop, but the material it's made from collects way too many dust particals and debris on its surface, in addition it slowes down operation of the camera by adding additional leyer to the controls.
