Product Description
Evoca 170SE is a compact fully automatic camera with a built-in 38-170mm 4.5X power zoom. It is the highest zoom ratio among 35mm compact cameras in the world. Evoca 170SE provides more accurate and clear picture quality by Schneider-Kreuznach lens, which is one of the world's most advanced optical lenses. It also realizes ultra slim size by minimizing the thickness with 2 spherical lenses. The passive autofocus system operates in several zones, to ensure the subject is in sharp focus. The system perceives, for examples, that dominant persons in the foreground are the intended subjects and will adjust the camera accordingly. Evoca 170SE is equipped with optional date / time and messages imprinting on photography (Evoca 170SE QD model). While current quartz date function provides only 2-digit year imprinting, Evoca 170SE provides 4-digit year imprinting. This is the first function ever applied in 35mm compact camera and will resolve uneasiness for Y2K problem. To prevent from unwanted errors while taking pictures, the camera automatically makes a warning sound several times when inappropriate setting is made. In addition, because the camera beeps out whenever shooting mode is selected, it is unnecessary to worry about whether proper function is set. Evoca 170SE has superb harmony from soft curves in solidity of metallic front and neoclassical tranquility in modern design. Metallic solidity extends luxurious feelings of Evoca 170SE and two-toned colors spotlight to increase grace. Evoca 170SE takes the compact zoom camera category to new heights and have established a new standard of excellence. It personifies what the ideal camera is all about.Amazon.com Product Description
Samsung combined the latest technology with top-quality German glass to create the stylish Evoca 170SE 35 mm compact camera. The Schneider-Kreuznach Varioplan 38-170 mm auto macro lens zooms in and out at 10 millimeter increments with impressive speed. Fully automatic, its six different modes are easily adjusted using the mode dial switch on top of the camera, similar to dials often found on digital cameras. The various modes include fully automatic snap shooting for active subjects, portrait zoom, which maintains a constant subject size within the frame, continuous shooting for photos in sequence, spot shooting for one subject in a crowd, and landscape shooting for focus set to infinity. An LCD on top of the camera allows you to see which mode the camera is set to as well as how many exposures are left on the roll, current measurement of the zoom, flash setting, and if the self-timer has been turned on. There is a separate panorama switch between the zoom button and the diopter that narrows the picture area within the diopter when set. Loading film is extremely simple, and the roll automatically rewinds when finished. If you depress the shutter button halfway down, a blinking green light will turn on when your subject is in focus. The macro mode sets automatically if the subject is within about 4 feet or closer.
The Evoca 170SE has an attractive look and feel overall, although some may find it slightly bulky. The stylish front of the camera is a metallic silver, but be warned that the backing is gray plastic. It comes with its own camera case and is powered by one 3 volt lithium battery. We recommend it for its intelligent design and powerful zoom.

Excellent camera, 1000+ photos in 1 year and still going........2002-10-05
I bought this camera around July 2001 after reading a number of reviews on Amazon.com as well as on Epinions. I was hesitant because Samsung was still (at that time---things have changed a LOT in one year) known for the cheap and flimsy stuff. At least, that was my biased perception at the time. Plus, the fact that the cost was within $100 of an SLR, and that there were *digital* cameras that were cheaper, made me consider and reconsider (I went to the checkout page @ Amazon like a dozen times, and retreated at the point where we have to finalize the order :-)).
I was getting married overseas, and although we had official photographers for the occassion, I wanted a backup plan (yeah, I'm that kind of guy). Taking my Pentax SLR was out of question, since hardly anyone knows how to use them anymore, and I can't be taking the photos at my wedding :) (not if I wanted to get out of there alive, anyway ;)).
Review
But I bit the bullet. The comments about the high quality of the lenses pushed me over the edge and I decided that this was a reasonable chance to take. I'm happy to report that the camera has proven to be *wonderful*. I haven't used my SLR since I bought that camera; enough said. The photographs are crystal clear and everyone's been amazed at the quality (I've used 400-speed film only, and have been getting photos developed at Ritz, so I dunno how much these contribute). Every roll has turned out really great. I've take pictures in Las Vegas, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York, India, you name it. I've taken over 1000 photos in a year with it. Despite Amazon prodding me to write a review in Aug 2001, I decided to hold off till I really gave the thing a solid workout. And now, in Oct 2002, I strongly recommend the camera with the weight of 14 months of usage behind me.
Let me throw in a couple of negatives to provide some balance though (these are the only ones I've got). The red-eye feature doesn't work too great. In fact, it's pretty poor. The second is that it sucks up battery (but I may just be taking too many photos). Finally, I've noticed that the small viewfinder proves to be a bit of a bother for people (when I request them to "Please take our picture" :)).
Again, weighed against the positives, I'd say this camera is extremely valuable even with these (for me, minor, especially since I have dark eyes which don't seem to be affected by the red eye) negatives. Night photos turn out great, something I've always feared automatics would mess up. Death Valley at Sunset, Las vegas Strip at night, Hoover Dam in twilight, and WTC towers at night in Aug 2001 (never expected those to be my last :( ) all came out brilliantly. The day photos are rich, and nature photos are always vibrant with colour (credits go equally to nature and the camera, I guess :-)).
Overall, a great automatic to buy!
