ForceFeed Back Flop.......2007-11-09
If you have an original Microsoft Force Feed back Sidewinder joy stick you have probably been in the dumps since XP came out with out support and Video cards stopped supporting joysticks. I was shocked when Microsoft stopped providing software for these great joysticks in the XP and Vista operating systems. Unlike newer joysticks, the Sidewinder was not Plug and Play and needed it's own software to be able to configure it. You can use this item to change it to plug into a usb but it will not work in XP or Vista on the Flight Simulator. Save your money and buy a new joystick. It will not not last as long as the rugged Sidewinder but it will work out of the box. ( For only a year or less with regular use.) They do not make joysticks like they use too.
Non-existent drivers and unrecognised device under XP.......2007-10-27
waste of money, unsupported hardware in both MS and Belkin worlds, except for a couple reviews above of people that don't even own the specific hardware in question and just assume it should work, this item DOES NOT WORK and is more accurately UNSUPPORTED.
Did not do the job for us; not recommended.......2007-09-24
We needed to create a joystick port on our PC. We thought this cable would do the job (after all, that's what it's made for) but it did not and we grew frustrated. A simple $6 adapter from Radio Shack did the trick. I think the issue may have been due to our needing to connect an *analog* device to the joystick end of this cable and the cable's inability to perform the A/D conversion (which the RS cable in fact does). That said, I'm not sure why anyone would purchase this Belkin cable.
Whoopsie.......2007-08-27
I wish the review posted Aug 27 had been up when I bought this. I have a Performance PC Commander Plus that I bought in a dollar store and guess what, this adapter doesn't work for it. I had a hard time getting the joystick to work on my old computer and assumed the bad reviews were because of similar problems finding the right controller settings. So, if you don't have a MS Sidewinder, don't buy this. Oh, well. If somebody does know a model of adapter that WILL work for other joysticks, then how about posting it here?
THIS IS ONLY FOR THE SIDEWINDER PRECISION PRO.......2007-08-27
...
THIS IS ONLY FOR THE SIDEWINDER PRECISION PRO, no other Sidewinder!
...
If you post further reviews, please put that header in so people will know. This item really shouldn't need further reviews, it's a ridiculously simple adapter that only works with one specific joystick, not all Sidewinders.
I'm not aware of any commercial product that will make the other joysticks work. If you search "3DP-Vert grendel", there is a do it yourself microcontroller project for it, and other info. It is supposed to work for the Sidewinder 3D Pro, Precision Pro, and Force Feedback Pro, I haven't built one yet to check.
Update:
For clarity, for Gameport to USB, there are 3 possibilities:
1. Simple connector pinout adapter. That's what this is, it will ONLY work with something with a USB controller already built in on the midi pins. Very few things have this, read the list later in post.
2. A USB Gameport adapter with gameport electronics inside. Some of the other Sidewinders will work with this, but only in analog mode, since this type doesn't understand the digital communications and most if not all aren't fast enough to do it going through USB.
3. 3DP-Vert as mentioned earlier. This isn't a normal gameport, it understands the digital communications for the sticks it works for and talks to them that way, then translates to the USB. Completely different from the normal gameport #2 type. I'm working on my own version of this type device, and may support other digital gameport devices, that's why I've been looking at all of these controllers. (3DP-Vert could conceivably read normal joysticks too, I haven't looked at it fully. But it's key function is that it can read the digital sticks, most other gameport-USB adapters won't have the programming to do that.)
Technically, this adapter will work with another product or two, here's a list of some:
Joystick Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro
Gamepad Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro
(old gamepad, not even worth getting this for, buy a newer better pad)
Joystick Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D
But again, if your Microsoft joystick says anything other than Sidewinder Precision Pro on the bottom this adapter will not work, maybe not even the earliest versions of that one.
With this update, the info here is fairly complete now..
Older info:
This isn't for any other Sidewinder product. Ordered one for me, since I have a Precision Pro on the way without adapter. There may even be an older version of Precision Pro that this won't work for, I haven't determined that yet. Look up Microsoft Sidewinder on Wikipedia, the Precision Pro came out as USB was getting popular, and was redesigned to work on USB as well, by hooking up the 2 unused midi pins to the USB data pins. The USB part is IN the joystick, this is just a wired cable. Their other gameport force feedback and controllers do not have these electronics, their digital communication was through other pins and not USB format. If your Sidewinder is anything other than a Sidewinder Precision Pro, it won't work! No surprise that some of the 5 star reviews say they happen to have just that stick. The 3D Pro Plus looks basically the same, but won't work either, totally different joystick. If what you have says anything other than "Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro" on the bottom do not get this!
The average Belkin CS person isn't going to be well versed in old minor products like this, so of course they don't know. Works 5 star for some, because they have the correct joystick. Doesn't work for others, not because they don't know how to make Windows work, but because it will never work! This was the last gameport MS joystick, and it came with it's own adapter they just get lost, so keeping this in mind isn't a priority for Belkin..

Fuji x-D card review.......2007-09-17
The product is good but antonline took way too much time to deliver it, about a month!!
Item is good ANTOnline Sucks.......2006-12-10
ANTOnline, the third party retailer that sells this item, canceled my order without giving a reason after a week with no contact. Now I don't have time to reorder before Christmas. Don't order from this vendor unless you like disappointment.
**EDIT** Looks like the retailer has changed. Good for Amazon. I have no comment on this new retailer because I have not ordered from them.
Faster than Type M xD cards.......2006-10-16
The xD "Picture Card" flash card comes in three flavors: standard (up to 512MB), Type M (512MB, 1GB, 2GB), and Type H (512MB or 1GB). The "H" stands for "high speed" and is the latest format allowing in theory for reads and writes up to 3 times as fast as Type M cards. Interestingly, Type M xD cards are 20% slower than "standard" 256MB or 512MB xD cards. For capacity 512MB or above, you won't find any more standard xD's; you'll find only M or H ones.
To see if your Fujifilm or Olympus camera is compatible with an M or H card, go to their websites and check out the compatibility charts. (Amazon doesn't allow links so I can't include them here but you can e-mail me if you can't find the compatibility charts.)
The SanDisk 512MB "H" card, which I use in my excellent Fuji F30 camera, is quite reliable (but see caveat below). It's definitely faster than the old Sandisk 512MB "M" card I had but I doubt it's even twice as fast. The problem with xD cards greater than 256MB is both "M" and "H" cards compress data which explain the slowness relative to high-speed Secure Digital, Memory Stick Duo and Compact Flash cards. For most applications xD cards are still plenty fast; occasionally, when you shoot in continuous mode, you might experience some problems.
When you buy a Sandisk (or Fujifilm or Olympus) in store, be sure to get a package that's marked "Made in Japan." Only two companies actually manufacture the xD cards: Toshiba of Japan and Samsung of South Korea. Samsung cards, in my experience, have serious quality problems and *WILL* fail sooner rather than later. Toshiba ones are much more reliable; none of my Toshiba-made cards have failed even under heavy usage. Therefore, you should never trust xD cards that are marked "Made in S. Korea." Be sure to shop around until you find Toshiba ("made in Japan") cards. This tip will save you lots of precious memories and from lots of headaches later on. Unfortuantely, this verification is hard to do when you shop on Amazon or online; I can only say "good luck"! At least you have 30 days to return or exchange when you buy from Amazon.
